Girl Hilltoppers out¬ numbered the boys about six to five. Most of the 18-year-old boys and many of the 17-year-olds had already gone to war. Many students were working on part-time jobs for school credit, but these and most of the others were more determined than ever to earn the coveted diploma of graduation. Many were carrying extra subjects in order to graduate ahead of time. Science and mathematics were the most popular subjects on the program because the Army and the Navy needed technical specialists. ROTC and physical education took on new interest for boys. Only girls applied for admission to college; boys centered their hopes on the V-1 2 and A-1 2 tests. Everyone at San Diego High School was trying to do his part to win the war.— John Aseltine, Principal to the o ice . The Boys —SDHS boys have made a splendid war-time response this semester to the demands of the armed forces as well as industry. Forty took the civ.lian qualifying test for the Army and Navy college training program, this number representing approximately three-fourths of the available Senior A boys, as about fifteen of the class are already inducted into the armed forces. Nearly three hundred boys helped to relieve the manpower shortage by working three or four hour shifts in industry. This all adds up to- a very creditable contribution to the war effort.—W. J. Lyons, Vice Principal The Girls —The war has brought to the high school girl the dilemma of discharging adequately her war-time responsibilities on the home-front, while at the same time preparing for a new and challenging post-war world. In active participation in school activities directing their programs towards war-time service, most girls have found their greatest satisfaction. Service, like all ideals, motivates the participant to develop certain indi¬ vidual qualities which make her more competent and effective as a person, as well as more intelligently considerate when carrying out her social and civic responsibilities. The girl of 1943 through service and by striving to attain worthy goals can live most adequately now and be assured of a worthy life in that inevitable but obscure new world of tomorrow.— Ruth Munsell, Dean RUTH MUNSELL, Dean W. Main activity on the fall calendar was the Homecoming celebration November 19, honoring the classes of I 899, 1900, 1918, and 1933. The outmoded A.S.B. constitution was taken in hand by the Council, and some major changes were made. The Council also conducted a Clean Campus Campaign to lighten the load of the custodial staff.— Tom Abies, President The Russ —With the news that last semester ' s issues had again been awarded the title of Pacemaker by the NSPA, this semester ' s staff made a determined effort to keep up the high standards of the paper, despite a war-time shortage of reporters and supplies. Most important issue of the semester was the Homecoming edition honoring the class of 1899, 1900, 1918, and 1933.— Gordon Luce, Editor Student Court —High school traffic offenders are tried Thursday morn¬ ings in the council room by the SDHS student court. This semester there was an increase of cases, with ,a record of 14 at one session. Sentences consisted of suspension of licenses and writing of 2000 word themes on safety.— Hudson Bowlby, Student Judge TOM ABLES, President MARY ANNE ALEXANDER, Vice President BOYS’ FEDERATION Left to right: J. The usual sophomore welcome party of games and songs was turned into a festival of making scrapbooks for the boys of the naval hospital. The library committee worked hard all semester to make gay colored covers for stories cut out of current maga¬ zines for the hospital patients. The girls co-operated with the Red Cross in helping to fill and check the Junior Red Cross boxes. The social service committee with the help of the homerooms arranged to get a present for every boy and girl at the Children ' s Home. They also planned a party of entertainment and refreshments.— Joyce Greenbaum, President Boys ' Federation —After a summer spent at the beach and at Convair, the Cavemen settled down to a semester of activity. The Boys ' Federation netted $146 in an enthusiastically supported penny drive for the American Red Cross. Of the total, $45 went toward completing the Red Cross Christmas boxes for servicemen and $98 was contributed to the San Diego Chapter of the Red Cross. Highlighting the semester were the Boys ' Fed .assembly and the Boys ' Fed-Girls ' League dance. The assembly was strictly a jam session by the SDHS Swing Band, while the dance was a gay affair with the guests in levis and prints. The decorations included a desert island on which many of the levi-attired boys longed to be marooned with the Pistol Packin ' Mama, Marjie Barchus.— Ronald Jones, President RONALD JONES, BF Prexy JOYCE GREENBAUM, GL Prexy Mary Phillippi, Adviser Louis Botte, President Florence Martin, Vice President Chester Davis, Adviser Jean Flack, Secretary Betty Spaeth, Treasurer Nancy Hamblen, Annual Frank Hall, Business Mgr. The class started the ball rolling by taking fourth period out October 14 for a get- together in the boys ' gym. Five weeks later the seniors, with underclassmen, went to Glacier Gardens to slide and glide for their skating party. On December 2 Russ Auditorium was the scene of their highly successful class play, Best Foot Forward, a collegiate comedy. Mothers were special guests at a tea served in their honor Jan¬ uary 6 in the Little Theatre. On January 17 seniors forgot their studies for one day to- spend their Ditch Day at Golden Hill Playground. Vesper service was held at the Unitarian Church. A double-header day was January 24 with Gift Day in the morning and, in the evening, the long- awaited Senior A Ball at Hotel del Coronado. Miss Phillippi and Mr. D.avis, senior A advisers, took the senior B class under their wing. A class cabinet was formed; dues books were sold; and a skating party, dance, and get-together were organized. For the first time in recent years, a picture of the entire senior B class appeared in the annual. Senior A sweaters, rings, and pins were ordered. Many members of the junior class were active in school groups so that during their senior year they will be prepared to take over the government of the school. The main activity of the class was the Junior Jive, a dance and get-together. Entertainment was furnished by Juniors. The sophomores appropriately named their dance, which they held the day before Thanksgiving, The Turkey Trot. They include the Russ Hi-Y, whose members are of all grades; the San Diego Hi-Y, for seniors; the Gray Castle Hi-Y, for juniors; and the Hilltop Hi-Y, for sophomores. Among the outstanding activities has been the bas¬ ketball league made up of city and county Hi-Y groups and other clubs. This year ' s trophy was won by the Russ Hi-Y. Social activities included hayrides, house parties, barbecues, and joint meetings with Girl Reserve groups, while service projects included the purchase of war bonds, giving of Christmas presents to boys at the Children ' s Home, delivering posters for war relief groups, and presenting the school with a new basketbal l scoreboard. This well balanced program is woven around the Hi-Y creed of clean sportsmanship, clean scholarship, and clean living.— Frank Hall, San Diego Hi-Y President I Annual —Although some schools had to give up their annuals in this third year of war, SDHS produced a small book for the class of January ’44.
