Came the fall and the reorganization of the drill along with the progression of the war, and Hillers weren't so sure it was all a joke. Boys answered roll call on the upper field while girls again occupied the front lawn. SDHS lost four teachers to the service. Ralph Vernacchia, arty Frank Stein, commercial, and Dr. Loomis Ganaway, social science, to the army and Ed Ruia, physical education, to the navy. Retiring after more than twenty-live years' service at the end of this semester are B. O. Lacey,- science head 5 Lawrence Carr, language heady John Thombs, head custo- diang and C. A. ,awpfrefazzw those who had towered over Mr. Taylor seemed like midgets beside tall, trim Mr. Austin. Nor will seniors forget the time when the teachers let down their collective hair at the Russ party in the spring of 1940 and portrayed typi- cal students. The next Russ party saw the faculty as Dogpatch charac- ters at Lil Abner's Wedding Day. Hit of the affair was Principal Asel- tine, who tipped a jug as Loathsome Polecat. The faculty skit to end them all came last spring when Wild Nell Bollo was hitched to Wild Bill Lyons while the other teachers looked on as Wild West stage props. Once though, when the faculty entertained, the students laughed and lost, 16-12. That was the teacher-senior A basketbrawl game last spring, dreamed up by history instructor Cleon Davies. Teachers led students in prepara- tion for War when all departments co- operated in the execution of a new emergency drill last spring, replacing the monthly fire drill. EX-cheer-leader Dick Jackson was the last of a long line of male ASB S p'4jo05!V ,O N presidents to rule the Hill for ayear.
