K Lf' lf f -f f' .ff THE GRAY CASTLE--1942 , E 2 i To the Senior A who can remember those eager sophomore days when he was awestruclc by the beauty and magnificence of the Gray Castle, we dedicate this annual. It has been designed to satisfy that craving in your soul for the different, and that partiality in your mind for the conventional. As you read the chapters and hum the lyrics from the most popular songs of our day included in these pages, let everything you read and see bring to you other memories: thoughts of these three years of a war which only recently has come to affect us directly, thoughts of rally and post-game dances, of the games themselves, of assemblies, and of those trips to the beach and the snow. We have given you only a basis for recalling the memories of three glorious years of high school life, your personal interests will complete The Gray Castle. Although many Hillers would hesitate to acknowledge the fact, San Diego High School has the kind of faculty they will like to remember as alumni. It is a faculty of various moods, and the students see them all: in classrooms, patient and serious, in club meetings, wise and helpful, in A W skits, scintillating and slap-happy. --4' June '42 graduates will remember principal John Aseltine, 3 - - N51 who became a doctor of education in June, 1941, for his fire- : X OCX I NC side manner in assembly, his friendly smile, and his ever- A ready helpful hand. Girls especially will not forget Miss Ruth L, I N D l A - Munsell, tall, well-tailored dean, nor boys, the two men they N 52? , , if CD Q' met when out of uniform. Nor will seniors forget the time when the teachers let down their collective hair at the Russ party in the spring of 1940 and portrayed typi- cal students. The next Russ party saw the faculty as Dogpatch charac- ters at Lil Abner's Wedding Day. Hit of the affair was Principal Asel- tine, who tipped a jug as Loathsome Polecat. The faculty skit to end them all came last spring when Wild Nell Bollo was hitched to Wild Bill Lyons while the other teachers looked on as Wild West stage props. Once though, when the faculty entertained, the students laughed and lost, 16-12. That was the teacher-senior A basketbrawl game last spring, dreamed up by history instructor Cleon Davies. Teachers led students in prepara- tion for War when all departments co- operated in the execution of a new emergency drill last spring, replacing the monthly fire drill. Students scoffe Miss Ruth Munsell Dean 8 David Austin Vice Principal f X Md lfze ' lacfa at the time, and complained laughingly that their stadium and front lawn stations were the most vulnerable spots in the school. Came the fall and the reorganization of the drill along with the progression of the war, and Hillers weren't so sure it was all a joke. Boys answered roll call on the upper field while girls again occupied the front lawn. SDHS lost four teachers to the service. Ralph Vernacchia, arty Frank Stein, commercial, and Dr. Loomis Ganaway, social science, to the army and Ed Ruia, physical education, to the navy. Retiring after more than twenty-live years' service at the end of this semester are B. O. Lacey,- science head 5 Lawrence Carr, language heady John Thombs, head custo- diang and C. A. That semester was the first, last, and only time that etiquette was the rage at SDHS. Future G. L. prexy Nancy Julian wrote Lemon Aids, which not only helped Cave boys and babes to be socially correct, but also paid for a badly needed public address system. Next fall another feminine president, Adrienne Wueste, struggled against overwhelming odds to bring the A.S.B. out of debt. The newly organized Pep Squad proved itself by decorating the gym and generally promoting a successful A.S.B. ball with Ruth Kimball as queen and foot- ball captain Oliver Fletcher as the gum-chewing king. First Wartime president, Bill Krooskos smiled his Way into office last semester-and went out still smiling, after a semester of blackouts and disaster drills. Four ambitious members of the June '42 class made Hillers forget the world war, while they waged a private one for the A. S. B. presidency. Royal Parks, Jack Courtney, George La Pointe, and Ellis Page fought bitterly with signs, slogans, and terrific speeches. The class reflected its ambi- tion in Jean: she did nothing, but she tried. Her time of greatest misery was when A.S.B. council members went on a picnic and paired off, leaving her, the child of the mob, to her own devices. As juniors, the class grew up a little and began to feel like superior beings with Parks as president. Talented students put on a free assembly for members of the class. Senior troubles hit the class in the fall of '41 with con- tinual difficulty about sweaters. President Bob Schwenk- meyer devoted his time to appeasing his constituents. Sophomore officers: Gwen Barron, vice presidentg Ronald Jones, president, Mitzi Schiller, secretary. Junior officers: George Keith, presidentg Bill Davis, treasurerg Don Chapman, secretary, Sheldon Kader, vice president. Senior B officers: Constance Frith, pres- identg Marie Down, treasurer, Jerry Small, secretaryg Barbara Donlevy, vice president. The student court, led by Judge Jack Holland, didn't aiect peagreens of '39 much. Junior A Ellis Page took over the judgeship in the spring of '41 from Philip Flint and kept the post the next fall. He groomed two probation officers, Fulton Camp and Bill Bade, however, for a bloody battle to decide who was to reign as tyrant for the senior A semester. Bill conducted such a quiet campaign that Fulton lived in fear of his oppon- ent's pulling something big on election day. When election results Were learned, Fulton was sitting on the judge's bench, doling out fines. In traditional style, sophs in the fall of '41 had a hard time finding a president until Tom Ables was finally appointed by the A.S.B. council. In the spring of '42 Ronald Jones was elected to the presidency. Junors had the same diiiculty until vice president Jerry Small moved into the president's seat. In the spring, George Keith took over junior government, while Con- stance Frith led senior B's. 17 ,mzm M, va, rw 7m 9 sw f'WPi Wf ' PW' ww fffafffff ffwf fzaJneue!zdeenfJa'4i4,anJhiecffa4e- can4hucl'l'faenewgu4ofzeonn1a7a4co7a4f- nga :z.m.4a.,.,e,,,w,n1,4e,a,,z..:a11,aro,,1 9diim7inlail'ialfweeweek4anclolean- in9u7zifnemeA4. Pohl, lean, blond hurdle ace, aided three other tracksters in splitting wide open the world's 880-yard high school relay record in his second year at the Hill. Smalley, chunky little pessimist, was also a member of the world's record relay four, second only to Glenn Willis in the sprints. Jack Cawley, hurdle- mate of Pohl, divided his time between playing jayvee football, boogy- woogying the ivories, and chasing Eddie over the track barriers. Howard Eckersley, who began his career on Coach Ed RuHa's cross country squad back in the sophomore days of '39, treked the 880 and the man's sweater and the prospector's hair-cut, followed Al Salmon across many mile finish lines in his junior year before coming into his own, and George Saiz was another cross country aspirant who graduated into a top distance man on the cinders in his last season. The sport dance was one affair which left a warm spot in s e n io r hearts. Although as sophomores and juniors, present grads swayed in the romantic atmosphere of a tropical isle, twirled in the half-light of an Asiatic harem, and stomped in the teeth-chattering surroundings of a snow man's Wonderland, they realized that their defense stamp contri- bution put over by Maxine Easton Was symbolic of their class and times. Those munch, munch, munch sounds which issued from the San Diego Club June 7 signified that the so-called better half and their paters really did justice to the Dad and Grad spread planned by Hi-Y'er Lewis Fry. June 15, the one day in the year that the alarm clock wasn't pro- fanely addressed, brought with it a legal reason for cutting class with no strings attached. In a sea of broken tradition, old standby Del Mar was ex- changed for Coronado for the occasion, managed by Ronald Maley.
