Bright ideas three, tour, etc., were a May Day frolic, a combined Girls' League and Boys' Federation sport dance. A LEAGUHE l 6 VJK ext-' MQ John F Alexander Rogers am Frank -due liyvryay Kyo, Yarn wigs, orchid lipstick, and ballet ruftles in honor o'F the fatal fourth decorated the all male chorus of the Better Beau Bureau hi-jinx in April. Ask the girl who's dated one was the cry as over a hundred boys pre- sented their 'First Hi-Jinx in six years. The 'First annual Pajama . Top Day shocked hers and dazzled Cavebelles. Third period teachers stepped aside for a day to let the lads reign when Boys' Day popped up in the middle of May. Burly Cavemen enjoyed another 'field day when they sprouted beards for the Federationis Whiskerino contest. A sport dance, sponsored with the Girls' League, climaxed the most active semester in many a year. They were rewarded for bags under their eyes when in April the announcement came that for the second year The Russ had been named Pacemaker, one of the thirteen best school papers in the United States. THE RUSS SOPHOMORES 41' 1 A Jean Carmichael They came from Roosevelt, Wilson, Horace Mann, Memorial to be A. S. B. president, Russ editor, R. O.T. C. colonel, and just plain Hiller. ' Green at the outset but ripening with age, the sophomores will be remembered for the 'Fact that at least they tried. As plans for peagreen assembly and Russ column dropped by the wayside, they decided that after all the school belongs to the seniors. Sparlrling .lean Carmichael divided her time between Russ staff and class presidency. Aiding her were Vice President Royal Parlrs, Secretary Lorraine Kestler, Treasurer Barbara Dye. , Wisecracking Lynn Weaver, sponsor, got them into the swing of things as sophomore names began to appear in The Rus as committee members, officers wisecraclcers in the Campus Candids. JUNIORS Bill Coonx Sophomores of last year and seniors of next year . . . Weighted down by their dark past and brilliant future, the junior class accomplished nothing of great or lasting consequence. Tall Bill Coons withstood the jinx ot I940 to become junior president, the only boy officer of his class. For the first time the vice presidency was split between tall Marian Jepsen and little Doris Cunningham. Horse-loving Pat Porter was secretaryg and Actress D-orothy Schlerf, treasurer. Farther on their journey toward campus dominance than the sopho- mores, the juniors made the grade to the following offices: A. S. B. secretary, Charlotte Gatewoodg Girls' League secretary, Doris Bachelderg Girls' League treasurer, Elaine Bronstoneg Drama Club president, Dorothy Schlerf. Miss Caroline Haddock was 'Faculty adviser. Doris Cunningham Marian Iepsen Pat Porter Uorvihv SCM f Betty .lane Selwyn To these falls the mantle of Senior-A-h-ood, the royal blue elif? sweater. Following a trend toward femininity in politics, Betty Jane Selwyn, president, Patsy Ryno, vice president, Olive Burnett, secretary, Barbara Webb, treasurer, headed the class. Adviser Charles Manning guided these in-betweeners. Senior B's had a foretaste of running activities on the Hill with Adrienne Wueste as A.S.B. vice president: Nancy Julian, Girls' League vice president: Philip Flint, student court judge, Alex Krooslros, Bob Estavillo, traclrmen. Ot a species soon to become extinct, the class of '4l, too old to go to the junior prom, too young for the senior prom, hibernated and f indulged in wishful thinking. f ! f 'H' Iwwf' 1 p ' 0 fi ff' , ., Af g ,- ff r I , P ff Patsy Ryno Olive Burnett Barbara Webb 'V ,, . Ro inson. l It may bc a man's world, but Cavebelles were not entirely ecli sed b the lamor of football and baseball on the Hill. Y l Seeing that Hilltop's amazons did not become forgotten women of sport were GAA President Esther Succetti, Vice President Connie Jones, Secretary Doris Fujimoto, Treasurer Betty Robinson. Advising the group was Miss Miriam Paine. A number of play days decorated the GAA calendar. A southern California conference at Whittier, pot-luclrs, hikes and bicycle rides highlighted the semester. GAA Precision on Parade was the working slogan of the Girls' Drill Team. Proving that girls are able to untangle intricate routines, the soldierettes appeared at every football game. Team uni- forms consisted of royal blue swing skirts, white high boots, trim white shirts, military blue and white jackets and cossack hats. Under the conscientious direction of Miss Miriam Paine, selected girls attended a special drill team officers' class held after school and became leaders. These officers were Dorothy Wrightson Eleanor Meade, Elizabeth Loperena, Catherine Maddon, Beth Barry. DRILL TEAM D. Wrightson: front to back, outside line: E. Mead, M. Glover, M. Serviola, M.
