Such a phrase might well be used to define the senior B class. Representatives of the coming high and mighties may be found in po- litical, musical, scholastic, athletic and military fields. Jerry Allen, class president, was vice-president of the juniors last semester. l-lis supporting senior B officers were Betty Kay Bone, vice president: l-larlene Bonham, secretary, Vylie Monson, treasurer. Another outstanding politician was Barbara Bone, who is A. S. B. historian. Benny Fiddle identified himself both as Assembly commissioner and musician. Benny plays the violin and led the sixty piece orchestra which played for Little Women. Four types of athletics received strong support from the senior B's. Harper Ink, who holds the national boys' indoor tennis championship, was captain of the l-lilltop tennis squad, and Marion Goodwin captured the single girls' title in the fourth annual lnlc tournament. Albert Olsen devoted his lefthanded pitching to the baseball nine, and Ted Kerr and Chet Kehn added their high batting averages to the team's support. Ricky Roth was star on the traclc team: Owen Olds participated in Gray Castle swimming, and l-larry Muns, Takeo Asalcawa and Leo Sawaya bolstered the football eleven. Employing their talents to increase their knowledge, thirteen senior B's enrolled in the California Scholarship federatio-n. Of this number, Frances Rinde and Lois Ybarra have been members since their sophomore semester. Jane Kurtz served on the control board of the organization as publicity commissioner. Seventy-one JIMMY HIGGINS PAT HILL VIRGINIA MOLINA BEVERLY BARKER President Vice-President Secretary Treasurer Juniors Sport Clever Costumes IJNIOR boys in nightgowns and night caps, others in tattered rags and still others in the latest style dresses, romped wildly over the stadiurn's baseba as they prepared for a softball game with the faculty on Blue and White day. The tilt was the main activity of the iunior class this semester. Jimmy I-Iiggins, class president, managed the team. Prominent players were Bill Seixas, varsity football man: Dick Wilson, last semester's junior prexyg and Bette Brown, captain of the girls' drill team. The junior class had many other outstanding members this semester. Aiding Jimmy as class head were Pat I-Iill, vice-president, Virginia Molina, secretary, and Beverly Barker, treasurer. Pat was also business manager of The Russ. Four juniors, besides the class representative, were on the A. S. B. Executive committee. Barbara Best was A. S. B. secretary. She was also news editor of The Russ and a member of Quill and Scroll. Bette Jo Bailey was ticket auditor. Last term she was Girls' league secretary. Lois I-Ianson, who was Girls' Ieague vice-president, also held that position last semester. Charles Wallis was Drama, Debate and Music commis- sioner besides being feature editor of The Russ and a Quill and Scroller. Junior Ns have next to the largest enrollment in the C.S. If. and claim membership of three of its officers, Josephine Gilbert, vice- presidentg Jean Stooke, secretary, and Daniel Walker, treasurer. Jean is also secretary of the Girls' Ieague. In the dramatic field Janet Applegate proved to be prominent, when she played Beth, one of the leading characters in the Dramatic club play, Little Women. I Seventy-two RUTH HEATHERLY JEAN CROCKER ADRIENNE WUESTE SHIRLEY ANNJE SHAW President Vice-Presioent Secretary Treasurer Sophomores Boast Scholars EGINNING their career in the Gray Castle, students in the sophomore class made themselves known this semester in many fields of work. They had many reporters on the editorial staff of The Russ and one out- standing track star. Besides being president of the class, Ruth Heatherly was a member of The Russ staff. Jean Crocker, who led the sophomores her first semester at the Hilltop, was selected as vice president this term. Adrienne Wueste, secretary, entered several branches of school activity. She was also president of her Girl Reserve triangle. Shirley Anne Shaw added both executive and singing ability to school affairs. She not only acted as sophomore treasurer, but she also was an active member of the Girls' Glee club and The Russ. The first sophomore to hold the position, Orthello Wallis was ad- vertising manager of The Russ. Orthello served, in addition, as president of the Philatelic society and secretary of the Hilltop Hi-Y. On The Russ, Robert Lantz proved himself indispensable as assistant sports editor. Robert Estavillo, sophomore B, was an outstanding member of the track team, excelling in the IOO and 200 yard dashes. Winning honors before co-ming to the Hilltop, Philip Flint and Jack Holland, both from Roosevelt Junior high school, were awarded American Legion scholarships. Sarah Markowitz was president of the student body in Memorial Junior high school and is the sophomore representative on the Girls' league here at the Castle. Bevvrites Constitution RUSADING in two tields ot endeavor, the Executive committee, guided by A.S. B. President Tim Crocker, carried through a suc- cesstul spring semester ot student body activities. One ot the major accomplishments ot the term was the rewriting ot the constitution tor the Associated Student Body. Since the existing setup caused many complaints, a group ot Ex-committee members, headed by Tim, drew up a new constitution to tit the school's needs. The control board conducted a campaign to reduce the A. S. B. debt. The first of these was the Spring Sport dance, given in the boys' gym, March eleventh. This affair not only set a precedent in federation activities but also was regarded by many as a success in every way. A week later the federation sponsored an athletic assembly, which was also heartily approved by students. The third event of the series was participation in the annual Combined l-li-Jinx, the profits of which were divided with the Girls' league. Conferences with representatives from Sweetwater Union high school and l-loover rounded out the program. Executive body of the federation consists of four officers and four committee chairmen appointed by the elected leaders. Tom Schelling, president, Felix Turnipseed, vice-president, Frank Martin, secretary, and Lewis Walker, treasurer, directed the boys this semester. Chairmen were William Cormier, John Lamont, Donald Robertson, and Paul Watson. Work this term was directed toward one goal, that of raising the Boys' federation to a high standard in the eyes of both faculty and students, declared the president. By the enlargement of activities, the successful completion of these projects, the cooperation and hard work of the leaders and weekly articles in The Russ, this goal was reached. Special credit is given to Samuel Erwine, faculty adviser, for his great help to the cabinet. Seventy-ninc: Ci. fs . Enlarges Activity Scope FTER completing the semester's pro-gram, California Scholarship federation members can look back on an active season. Mrs. Olga l-lamman, C.S.F. adviser, announced that this term the organization has become more important and useful to the student body than in previous years. One and one-half years ago, the scholarship club inaugurated the custom of a semi-annual series of informative meetings for incoming honor students. Proving successful, the plan was enlarged until this semester the whole sophomore B class was included. When Tim Crocker, former C. S. F. head, became A. S. B. president, he proposed that the larger organization take over this beneficial work. Thus arising from the hono-r club's motto, Scholarship for Service, this helpful aid to new students is now a firmly established policy. Setting a record for high average in their studies, student leaders of four of the largest school organizations were conspicuous by their presence. President, vice president and secretary of the A. S. B., Tim Crocker, Gloria Winke and Barbara Best, respectively: president of the Girls' league, Emma Baldelliq president of Boys' federation, Tom Schellingg and editor of The Russ, Graham Kelly, were enrolled as members. lt is not often that any club can have such a distinction, declared the sponsor. Throughout the term, several types of activities were offered to the one hundred forty-four members. Two skating parties provided mainly for a scholarship fund and the semi-annual Ditch day at the beach. The annual convention of the honor societies of Southern California took place in Santa Monica, April thirtieth. Chapter eighteen from San Diego high school conducted one of the panel discussions on world peace. Alma Doig, president, presided over the forum, and a summary of the remarks was presented by a l-lilltopper, Tim Crocker. Promoting better inter-school relationship, the Gray Castle group was host to C. S. F. chapters fro-m l-lerbert l-loover, Point Loma and La .lolla high schools at a banquet May ninth. A newly inaugurated plan of representation for sophomore B mem- bers at meetings of the board of control was put into effect. Delegates from the associate class were Lester Monson, Takeo Asakawa and Adrienne Wueste. Totaling one hundred and forty-four members, the club's largest division is the graduating class, represented by forty-one scholars. Closest rival is the junior A class with twenty-oneg followed bv the sophomore A's with nineteenp iunior B's, fourteen, and the senior B's, thirteen. Reyer, Hilltop music head. Accompanist and arranger for both clubs and the Boys' quartet is Mrs. Reyer. Members of the Boys' Glee appeared often during this semester, with Carlos Johnson as club chairman. Included in their engagements was the Mount l-lelix Easter service which was broadcast throughout the world. The Girls' Glee club has presented twenty-five concerts since Christmas. Combined with the Boys' Glee, they also appeared at Mount l-lelix on Easter morning. l-lighlight of the semester for both clubs was their semi-annual concert, presented in May. Proceeds from the affair were deposited in the joint club treasury to be used for regular expenses and social service within the clubs. Their banquet, also held during the month of May, was one of the outstanding social events of the semester. Probably making more public appearances fo-r the l-lilltop than any other unit was the Boys' quartet from the Advanced Boys' Glee club. This group, which now consists of eighty-two pieces, has in the past been asked to represent California in natio-nal contests and has been awarded national honors. Musical journals have praised this organization many times, said Mr. Marcelli. At present it is widely known as one of the best high school orchestras in the country. Nino Marcelli, who came to San Diego high school in l92l, is re- sponsible for its success. A native of South America, he has become known in national musical circles as an outstanding composer and conductor. l-le devotes third and fourth, periods of each day to leading the group. Third period he helps beginners in the elementary class. Fourth period the advanced students, of whom the orchestra is composed, practice under his guiding hand. As the group presents a concert each semester, the members work with this end in mind during the entire term. ln the fall semester the program was given January eleventh with Jack Vogel, stepson of Mr. Marcelli, as concert master. This semester the program was presented May twenty-fourth. Proceeds from these affairs pay for musical scholarships given to talented students who would otherwise find it difficult to prepare for a life work in music. Many alumni members of the orchestra have found success in musical fields. Perhaps the most successful graduate is Joe Kirschbaum, who is now assistant professor of music at Oberlin college. A great majority of the members of the Gray Castle Musicale, music club, are also in the orchestra. The String Quartet, a subsidiary branch of the larger group, has filled many engagements in San Diego during the last several months. Playing on an average of once a week to adult organizations, the four players have found an increasing demand for their services. Members of the quartet are: Benny Fiddle, violin: Jean Fibiger, viola, LaVerne Brown, violin, and Lucille Adams, 'cello. Other semi-annual activities o-f the orchestra were a banquet and dance. Little known is the fact that the orchestra has officers. They are: President. Mentor Schutte aided Bro-derick by instructing the boys in line play, while Ted Wilson tathered the backtield. Coach Broderick also guided this season's sterling track squad, that won the Southern Calitornia championship. The varsity basketball team, under the supervision ot Rutta, tinished its season as a strong second in the Coast league. The B team was directed by Coach Schutte, while Wilson helped the C and D quintets. October second saw the Cavemen trample the Compton Junior college Reserves I9-7 in Caveman's canyon, to open the year on a pleasant note. Traditional rivals.. Pomona high evened things by grinding the l-lillers under their heel 26- I3 on the second Saturday of the campaign. Long Beach Poly journeyed south as the Cavemen opened their Coast Prep league schedule in the stadium and returned to the Beach city winners by the I3-6 count. The Bunnies won the loop championship and entered the S. C. l. F. playoffs but were defeated in their initial game by Santa Ana high, former member of the Coast circuit. Cn the following Friday afternoon, victory again visited the Blue and White when the State college Frosh fell 2l-I3. On the Frosh squad were many former l-lilltoppers who will go on to bigger things fo-r the Aztecs. Alhambra came south the following weelc and lost a I4-I3 thriller. Tables were turned the next Saturday when the local eleven headed east for Phoenix, Arizona, and were handed a 26-O setbaclc by a power- house aggregation. With the city championship at stalce, the Red and White o-f l-loover and the Blue and White of San Diego battled it out before l3,000 l-lomecoming day customers in the stadium. The Cardinals returned winners by one touchdown, I3-6. Long Beach Woodrow Wilson climaxed the i937 season for the Castlemen with a 6-O triumph on the Brufn field. Although Ed Beclcer, All Coast league and All Southern California taclcle in l936, was not named on the l-lonor team last year, his play in l937 was an improvement over the previous season, according to many onloolcers. Evie Davis, starting quarterbaclc, was given much publicity by local dailies. Following the l-loover game, one of the papers stated that Davis and Ernie lvlcAnulty of l-loover were the two best prospects in local high school football. The usual starting lineup last fall was as follows: Leo Sawaya and Zeno Berger, ends: Ed Becker and Ed Crossley, tackles, Bill Seixas and Ted Barnes or Bob Bouton, guards: Dionisio Molina or Jimmy Wright, center, and Evie Davis, George Woolett, l-larry Muns and Leonard Blaclc in the baclcfield. n 'ndred five C First row. Long Beach Poly went down under tast Caveman teet. scoring but 22 points against the Hillers' 32. A deteat at the hands ot Alhambra put San Diego in a precarious position. The big game ot the year was against l-lerbert l-loover high school. The scrapping l-liller team gave the Cardinals their only defeat ot the season. A tense and exciting battle, in which the two rivals tought desperately, ended with the Cavemen victorious at 20 to l9. The team ended the season with an excitng game against Woodrow Wilson ot Long Beach. Trailing the Long Beach tive with but a tew minutes lett, the Hilltop cagers came through with a surprise tinish to win 37 to 35. Tracksters Win Championship HE SAN DIEGO HIGH SCHOOL track team ot spring, l938, proved to be o-ne which Hilltoppers can remember with pride. An impressive array ot outstanding athletes drew increasing interest as they swept to the championship ot Southern Calitornia. Sharing a three way tie with Hoover and Woodrow Wilson tor Coast league championship, San Diego went into the league tinals a slight tavor- ite. A decisive victory in that event won Hiller trackmen undisputed claim to top position. Captain Bob Logan, whose possibilities seem unlimited, proved him- selt a capable leader by nearing the national record in the high jump and securing winning points in the broad jump. John Biewener, a constant winner in both hurdle races, was supported by Louis Thomas and Jim Bowes to torm a hardworking and dependable trio. Biewener's hurdling torm will long be remembered by enthusiasts. The flashing grin ot big George Franklin rounding the turn in the gruel- ing 440 is another sight that will tade slowly. Ricky Roth and Albert Heredia showed stamina in the distance runs, while Leo-nard Black and Bob Estavillo composed a capable sprinting sec- tion. With a starting lineup composed entirely of returning lettermen, the squad entered the race as favorites and upheld all expectations. First victim of the Cavemen was Long Beach Poly by an 8-6 county and in the next game, Alhambra was downed by the same score. in the most exciting battle of the season, l-loover was beaten, 7-4. The first half came to a close with the l-lillers slugging out a I4-6 verdict over Long Beach Woodrow Wilson. During the Easter holidays, the team went north for the Annual Pom- ona tournament, only to be eliminated in the semi-finals by Wilson, 3-2. Poly also turned the tables on the Gray Castle nine by downing the Cave- men 7-6 in their only defeated league game. l-lowever, the club stopped this losing streak by humbling Alhambra, 5-4, and swamping the Hoover Cardinals, II-3, The schedule was completed when Al Lefty Olsen shut out Wilson, 2-O. The first string battery consisted of Olsen on the mound and Stan Sharp behind the plate. Ted Kerr, captain, was at first, Mel Slcelley at second, Fred Martinez at third, and Chet Kehn handled short stop. Wrestling Gains prominence TTRACTING the unprecedented number ot ninety-tour entrants to the Boys' Intramural tournament, tirst event ot the year, wrestling at San Diego high school is swittly gaining the prominence ot a major s ort. p First outside matches were held on April 8, when nineteen boys embarked on the team's longest trip ot the semester to engage a group ot bone-crushers from the Sherman Indian school at Riverside, Calitornia. Hilltop maulers worked over the Indians, defeating them by a score ot 45'f2 to 25V2 points. In the Annual Southern California C. I. F. wrestling championship tournament held at Inglewood, Whittier nosed out San Diego by one point. Coach Franlc Crosby's wrestling teams always merit the approbation ot San Diego high school. This ancient sport has long been attractive to boys on the I-lilltop, as indicated by the constantly increasing number ot participants. Good hard tun and physical development malce this activity one ot the most interesting in the school. One hundred nine Qi-A7 First row: Lippincott, Martinez, Nagle, Ink, Alverson. The title was won by Alhambra, detending champions, despite the tact that the l-lillers were pre-season tavorites. Finishing sec- ond in the league was the Long Beach Wilson team. ln league competition, the Cavemen broke even, winning two matches and losing two. Victories were registered over Long Beach Poly, 8-3, and over l-loover, 7-4. Alhambra and Long Beach Wilson were the two conquerors ot the l-lilltop racket men, both deteats being by a score of 9-2. Despite the disappointing showing ot the team, there were some bright spots during the season. l-larper lnk, Jr. captain and number one player, tought his way to the tinals ot the annual Ink tournament. ln the girls' division, Marion Good- win upheld the Blue and White by winning the championship. Ink teamed with Paul Smith to torm the only stable doubles combin- ation. This pair went to the finals ot the Coast league tournament betore being eliminated. Swimming NDER the direction ot Coach l-lenry Gunther, Gray Castle's swim- ming team is striving to build l-lilltop swimming to the prominence it now holds in many other Southern Calitornia high schools. This semester the natators completed one ot the liveliest seasons in recent years. Led by Captain Diclc Jaclcson, the team, composed ot Buddy Olds, Bob Crawtord, Bob Carson, Galen Frostle, Russell McCormiclc, Bill Mean- ley, Eddie Lowe, Bob Newton, Walter Stewart, and Yulrio Tsumagari, placed high in many events in both sprints and long distance classes when they met other swimming clubs ot the city at a meet held in the Ocean Spray Plunge at Ocean Beach. Another highlight ot the semester occurred when the team competed in the Coast league swimming meet held at Compton, Calitornia, against other Southern Calitornia aggregations, including Long Beach Poly and Woodrow Wilson. Because ot Gray Castle's laclc out proper tacilities, the team is torced to workout in the Y. M. C. A. pool. ln the opinion ot Coach Gunther, the only possible way tor l-lilltop swimming to rise to its warranted prominence at the school is to get a long awaited swimming pool.
