Southwick V 1 E112 Enrvwnrh Uhr Elhvmr Uhr Art mark Uhr igurpnav Taking our inspiration from the touch of mediaeval architecture which distinguishes our San Diego High School from all others and believing that it, in some remote and subtle way, symbolizes the courage, the high ideals and the chivalry of its students, we have chosen the mediaeval theme for our june '36 Gray Castle. To carry out the chosen theme, all art work portrays the spirit of the Middle Ages. Though a more ro- mantic than a practical subject, the mediaeval drawings lend a picturesque atmosphere to the Gray Castle annual. Much praise is due to Betty Carringer, art editor, who was ably assisted by Virginia Dell. All art worl: was supervised by Miss Harriet Southwick. If in the yet undiscovered future some member of june class of '36 will thumb the yellowed pages of this Gray Castle and see the face of a half-forgotten friend, thrill to the athletic prowess of long-ago teams or sigh a little for those Hilltop days which can never come again, we shall have accomplished our purpose. This record is based on the work of the live senior high school semesters All students whose semester grades of A Qsuperiorj number eleven or more are placed on the honor roll. A per- fect record for the hve semesters would be twenty A's , as the average student carries four subjects each semester. A few honor students are able to carry five subjects and thus accumulate more than twenty A's during their high school course. NOTE: Students who enter with grades of A from other schools will have their A's accepted for the honor roll providing they make as good grades while in attendance at San Diego Senior High School. Frp, 'los swimming- champion friend, was played by Melvin Gundlach. Bud, the son, was the contribution of Qtto Goldkamp. Mabel Grant as Fanny, the maid, and Elliot Curtis as Fuji, the house-boy, supplied bits of comedy. Members of Maude's gang were: Joyce Wfhitney as Betty, Wfyatt Fisher as Chuck, and Laurie Scott as johnny. Sez erzleefz PAT DENNSTEDT SOL SCHULTZ Edilof Bu.i'if2e,i'i' Flflmzrzgef' Greig Olarailv Sviaff FACED with the task of editing a Gray Castle worthy of June class of '36, the annual staff plunged into its activities early in March guided by Patricia Dennstedt, annual editor, and Sol Schultz, business manager. Shouldering a tremendous responsibility, the stahf inaugurated several startling changes. In the senior section, individual write-ups were limited to stating but one activity. This was done in order to make the section uniform and also more democratic. The staff now feels that no student will have his high school memories marred by envying the popular student and his more impressive write-up. All pictures were placed the length of the page. Hitherto exceptionally large pictures have always been run the width of the page, making it necessary to turn the whole book in order to look at them. Thanks are due to Miss Margaret Verl Freyburger and Mr. Arthur Wicks who acted as literary and hnancial advisers respectively. The art work was skillfully supervised by Miss Harriet L. Southwick. Annual staff members were: Associate editor, Phyllis La Due, Senior, Marjorie Carr and Daniel Graham, Organizations, Mabel Grant and Margaret Moseley, Humor, Peggy Beverly and Margueritte Titus, Athletics, Lee Mon- roe, Glen Munkelt, and Leon Fish, Art, Betty Carringer, Typists, Katrina Frankson and Genevieve Peery. S6t'l'6fcIi'-'I' Bimini' A ahinvi THREE years ago nearly 800 bewildered sophomores entered the Gray Castlels 'Portals of Knowledge. These same sophomores, although now numbering only 500, constitute the San Diego High School June 1956 grad- uating class. In the fall of 1935, the first graduates of a new junior High School, Horace Mann, joined the rank of a Caveman along with graduates from Memorial and Roosevelt. That year the class participated with a stunt in the first annual Homecoming, winning second prize. Led by Bettie Carr, in the sophomore A year, the class was represented by a green Hag during Blue and White Day. Witli the new junior year, the class witnessed the changing of periods from 40 minutes to one hour. Bob Middleton and Bob Henderson led the class fall and spring semesters respectively. In January several of the boys participated in the annual Boys' Day, and the girls, in May, were active in Girls' Day. The senior B year saw the class, with Bob Middleton at its helm, order the long awaited sweaters and rings, win first prize in Blue and XVhite Day, hold principal offices for Boys' Day, and the student body elect Tom XVilliams A. S. B. president. Leading the class this year were Bob Henderson, president, janet Phillips, vice-president, Ann Weldon, secretary, Harry Miller, treasurer. Many out- standing activities which will long be remembered by the '56 C1355 are the skating party, class play, sport dance, ditch day, senior A ball, gift day, and finally, commencement. The A. S. B., under the leadership of the Ex-committee, has successfully carried out many activities during the spring semesteff On February 25 and 26 it sponsored the Combined Boys' and Girls' Hi- jinx. Numerous rally and noon dances have been put on under the guidance of the Ex-committee. On May 1 the traditional Blue and Wliite Day was celebrated at the Hilltop, another activity sponsored by the A. S. B. May 29 found the hard-working members of the Ex-committee enjoying an A. S. B. banquet. On the night of june 5, the most important event of the semester took place when Hilltoppers, arrayed in their nnery, danced at the Associated Stu- dent Body ball. Aside from its social activities, the A. S. B., with the leadership of a com- mittee appointed by the Ex-committee, revised the A. S. B. constitution, a work which proved highly successful and worth while. Si,-fly-.fix W-Y A . With Bettie Carr as its president, the organization has promoted liner friendships, greater loyalty and higher ideals among the girls at the Gray Castle. The first event this semester was the Big and Little Sister Dance which was given in the girls' gym, February 21, its purpose being to welcome sopho- more B girls to San Diego High School. On March 6, members of the Girls' League, under the direction of Fleeta Marlie Walker, presented a vaudeville show before a Girls' League assembly in the Russ auditorium. A tap dance routine, selections from the Boys' Quartet, a tumbling exhibition and a piano duet were among the highlights on the program. May 1 saw Bettie and her assistants busily engaged in presenting the gayest and brightest dance of the season-the Girls' League Leap Year dance. The president and her cabinet held weekly business meetings in Room 105 throughout the semester. Cabinet members were: Joyce Cunningham, vice-president, Pat Dennstedt, secretary, Marie Small, treasurer. Sixly-eight X . . Ae.. BOB 2llDbDLFTOX LOL'lS THDMAS DICK BOIQCHER GLEN LILXKELT if I fn. First important meeting of the group was that one held in the boys' gym on March 6 when the finals of the San Diego High School wrestling tournament were played off. Most admirable of the Federations undertakings this semester was the Clean Castle Campaign which was under the direction of George Ellis. An appeal to the students' sympathy and pride was the theme of this drive. The slogan was Have a Heart, referring to the overworked condition of Hilltop janitors and gardeners who every day gather a great deal of trash collected from all corners of the Gray Castle. On Friday, April 30, members of the Federation met in Russ auditorium at which time class numerals were awarded to Gray Castle athletes. Awards in basketball, baseball, and track were given. Boys' Federation cabinet members were as follows: Bob Middleton, president' Louis Thomas, vice-presidentg Dick Boucher, secretaryg Glen Mun- kelt, treasurer 5 George Ellis, Howard Cooper, committees, W. Qlalifnrnia Svrhnlarahip Elivhvratiinn WITH one hundred and thirty members, the California Scholarship Federa- tion is one of the largest active organizations at San Diego High School. Living up to its maxim, Scholarship for service, this club performs many duties for the school, among which is being responsible for the information desk in the Administration Building. On the first day of school, C. S. F. members volunteer their services as guides for the new students, thus making themselves indispensable. The purpose of the society is to seek truth through knowledge, and only the students attaining certain scholastic honors are eligible for membership. The student is judged for entrance into the club by points gained through grades. An A in a solid counts three points and a B contributes one to- vxard the ten points necessary. A gold pin is the reward given a student who has been on the honor roll for four semesters, thus making him a life member. A life member also receives a gold seal of scholastic merit on his diploma when he graduates from high school. Mrs. Olga Hamman, club sponsor, and five delegates attended the annual convention held this year at Sweetwater Union High School. Several C. S. F. members from San Diego High School were present at the regional conference held at Los Angeles in April. Members from both the fall and spring semesters were invited to the traditional banquet given by all city schools on May 14. A skating party was given near the beginning of the semester in honor of members who had paid their dues. They were consequently admitted free of charge. Completing the semesters festivities and ending the school year, C. S. F. members were looked upon with envy as they chose one of the hottest days in early june to spend at Mission Beach on their ditch-dayf, Officers for this semester were: janet Phillips, president, Mildred Porter, vice-president, Thomas Ludwig, secretary, Quirk Kline, treasurer, Jeanne Smith, publicity manager, john Allen, activity manager. Following a more or less customary program, the musical group gave their two concerts for the spring semester, the first of which was in February and the second in june. On the latter program Gail Rohde, concert-mistress, was featured in a violin solo and Vella Mary Capps presented a 'cello solo. Going places where a larger body cannot, the Quartet has represented the school in San Diego at clubs, churches, and P.-T. A. meet- ings. They have also been featured in several broadcasts over stations KFSD and KGB. An important event of April was the blending of boys' voices in the program given at the Presbyterian church on Easter. Singing in the House of Hospitality at the Exposition made the boys familiar to many visitors from out of town. Becoming more popular with each appearance, the group was especially appreciated in the Combined Hi-Jinx. However, the most important appearance in late spring was at the annual choral concert held on May 24. The Quartet was directed by W. F. Reyer and aided by Mrs. Reyer as ' t and arran er. Broderick, former head track and Class B football coach. Broderick, for his first season, put a team in the field that set a remarkable rec-ord, winning six games, tieing one and losing only two, those by a single point. In the opening game of the season, the Cavemen won a close victory over Long Beach Vfoodrow XY'ilson, 21-20. The Hillers emerged victorious from their next pair of non-league frays by downing Pomona, 20-0, and the State Frosh, 7-6, Inaugurating their Coast Prep League campaign, the Cavemen nosed out the Moors, 15-6, in a game at Alhambra. On October 26, playing before 16,000 enthusiasts, San Diego and Herbert Hoover waged their annual battle for the city championship in the stadium. After leading their rivals well into the fourth quarter by a six point margin, the Hillers were downed through a series of runs and passes which brought the Cardinals a touchdown after a sustained drive from the forty-yard line. The Cards made the extra point by a lme plunge to win the game. -Iourneying to Arizona the following weekend, the Cavemen tied Phoenix, 12-12, in a game filled with mishaps for the locals. Plunging again into the Coast League tangle, the Hillers ventured north to Santa Ana where they won a 10-7 victory by means of a last minute field goal. After defeating Herbert Hoover of Glendale, 7-0, in the Homecoming fray, the Hillers prepared for the most important game of the year, the Long Beach tilt. Once again jinxed by one point, San Diego was forced to lose a hard fought game, 7-6. At the close of the season, a football carnival was held at Long Beach. Obtaining partial revenge for their defeat at the hands of the jackrabbits, San Diego and Santa Ana beat Long Beach and Alhambra, 8-12, in this novel event. The success of the season was largely due to Coach Broderick and his assistants, Bill Schutte and Coach Dewey Morrow. Trainer Paul Fern, Man- agers Marshall Tomkins and Clark Good were of invaluable assistance to the squad. Eighty-nine Lefl 10 rigfal, firrl row: Berber, G0ldk,1mp, MfCull, limzwz, HVJHIEV. Coach Morrow and the entire team are to be congratulated for a most successful season and for their outstanding performances. Ninety-lu'0 Fin: mu, leur: to right: lx'r:tfei'.l. Starting with a bang, the Hiller simon-pure bone-benders walked away with the County A. A. U. Wfrestling tournament by amassing twenty-six points to beat out their nearest competitor, the Army and Navy Y. M. C. A. Consider- ing the powerful opposition furnished by the San Diego Club, the Army and Navy Y. M. C. A., the City Y. M. C. A., and the San Diego State College, the Cavemen turned in a truly remarkable performance by taking four hrsts and a goodly array of seconds and thirds, thus retaining the county champion- ship for the fifth successive year. The Hilltop squad closed the season in brilliant fashion by winning its first outright Southern California championship in six years by compiling forty- two points, giving them a five-point margin over Wfhittier, defending champion. The matmen collected six additional crowns of the nine available and added a respectable number of seconds. Ninety-rix ' J ' -ev-'WMM' ' , if, L, . f 7 y Wi, , 1, TOP Wu- lil! After losing a close match to the Alumni, 5-6, the Hillers embarked on their Coast Prep League campaign by playing Long Beach on the northerner's home course. After tieing the jackrabbits, 215-ZQ in their first game, the San Diegans tied a heartbreaker on the San Diego Municipal layout by another score of 25-25. Playing again on the local course, the Hillers dropped a decision, By?-IQ, to the powerful Santa Ana squad, placing them in a tie with the Hares. The Cavemen also rated high among the local high schools, having smothered Coronado in two consecutive games and being evenly matched with Point Loma and Hoover aggregations. The playoffs to determine the varsity ranking showed the following re- sults: Bob Ramet No. 1, Guy Showley and Lee Monroe tied for No. 2, George Burnett No, 4, james Kelley No. 5, Lee Walker No. 6, and Lester Larson No. 7.
