Other otticers this year were: Vice-President, Morris Pollock, Secretary, Ricardo de la Cruzg and Treasurer, Willard Mayer. Miss Mary Phillippi and Mr. Arthur Wicks proved to be capable and sympathetic advisers to the class. The Cabinet as well as all other organizations telt the necessity ot economizing and tor the tirst time in many semesters voted against re- ceiving souvenir gitts. Dues this semester were also reduced, and the class thereby got more activities tor the money than in previous years. Although the student body was somewhat hampered by old man depression, an economic budget plan- ned by the A.S.B. otticers was highly successtul. Throughout the semester penny noon dances were staged and en- thusiastically received by the students. Blue and White Day, the two-year old tradition, went ott with a bang due largely to the ettorts ot Frances Moore, activity chairman. Because ot the earthquake in Los Angeles anc. vicinity, a Long Beach Poly High earthquake reliet drive was held to help restore the beautiful school of the Hilltop's triendly rivals. The sum collected ot 373.05 was appreciated greatly by the receivers. The traditional A.S.B. Full ot activities such as assemblies, rallies and dances, this semester has been exceptionally lively. The Boys' l-li-Jinx, an annual spring tederation activity, was proclaim- ed the best ever staged. The attair which was held on the atternoon ot March 30th, and the evenings ot March 30th and 3 lst, was under the cap- able direction ot Paul Parker. To promote better co-operation between parents and teachers, a tather and son banquet was given in the Cateteria April oth. Entertain- ment lasted throughout the evening. The three tederation committees tor the spring semester with their respective heads were: Personal Service Committee, Elya Bresslerg Satety Committee, Charles Taylorg and School Service Committee, Paul Parker. JUNE' 1933 Sixty-three Tl-IE RUSS NTIL the present semester The Russ stood as the only paper on the coast which was supported solely by advertisements. Financial condi- tions, however, made it seem that some other plan ot support would have to be arranged. Mr. Jean l-lodges, commercial teacher, supervised a con- test among the fifth period classes, and l6OO subscriptions at ten cents each were secured. Also copies were sold tor one cent apiece. Beginning another new policy, The Russ sponsored a bulletin board display which was changed twice daily. News was turnished from material in downtown papers. il-his plan enabled students to learn ot the latest local, national, and international occurrences at an early date. ln the annual Columbia Press Association contest the paper was awarded tirst place in its division. Judgement was based upon publications ot the tall semester. A teature story by Le Roy Keleher won the contest at the Southern California Press convention. Although copies ot the paper were entered in the National Press contest, word ot the outcome had not been received in time tor publication. Miss Verl Freyburger acted as faculty adviser tor the statt ot the tol- lowing heads: Editor-in-Chief, Gordon Frost: Assistant Editor, Jeanette Munlceltg News Editors, Jean Frame, Edwin Schmidt and l-larold Reismanq Literary Editor, Ruth Stanley: Personal Editor, Esther l-larderg Society Edi- tor, Bernice Bonsignorq Sport Editor, Earl Keller: and Business Manager, Diclc Erisbie. To become a member ot this organization, a student must receive ten points. The grade ot A in a solid counts three points, a one: one- halt solids are proportioned correspondingly. Not more than two points may be gained from extra-curricular activities. On April 2 l, the club sponsored a New Deal Dance which was pro- nounced one ot the best ot the year. Ed Johnston's orchestra was tea- tured and novelty entertainment provided. The annual banquet, to which members ot both semesters were in- vited, was held May I8. The l-loover Chapter also attended. JUNE, 1933 Siffv-five ADVANCED ORCHESTRA NDER THE leadership ot Mr. Nino Marcelli the San Diego High School Orchestra ranlcs as one ot the outstanding organizations ot the Gray Castle. The greatest accomplishment ot the orchestra is the concert which is given in the Russ Auditorium near the close ot each semester. This pro- gram is rated as one ot the major activities ot the year and is enjoyed by many. In the spring semester, the main numbers ot the concert were Rienze Overture by Wagner, I8I2 Overture by Tschailcowsky, and Cap- rice Espanole by Rimslcy-Korsaltott. There are two social tunctions which are enjoyed by the entire orches- tra, namely a dinner and dance which was held this year at the Cabrillo Cate, and an invitation to spend a day at the mountain home above Lake Cuyamaca, ot Mr. and Mrs. Marcelli. Twice a year an initiation tor new members is held. This is always an amusing attair. Although the organization started with eighteen members in I922, it has increased greatly and now numbers eighty-two. Benjamin Harrison pertormed the duties ot concert master this semester. Organized in the same respect as other clubs, the orchestra has tour executive otticers. The tour who directed the activities tor the spring semester were: President, Murdock Kidderp Vice-President, Charles Jacob- son: Secretary, Lois Thompson, and Treasurer, Betty Jean Capp. Sixty-Six THE cram cAsrLE BOYS' QUARTET AVING REPRESENTED the school in more than two hundred en- gagements during the year, the San Diego l-ligh School Quartet has rendered more service to the Gray Castle than many other organizations. They have sung over the radio, at school tunctions, in churches, and at such groups as the Kiwanis Club, the Ad Club, the Electric Club, and the P. T. A. The quartet is entirely an honor subject, no credit being given except the reward ot doing something which is worthwhile. Led by Mr. W. F. Reyer, they have as their accompanist Mrs. W. F. Reyer, who also arranges most ot their songs. Those who composed this year's quartet, were as tollows: in the tall Francis Schultz, tirst tenor, Willard Mayer, second tenorg Don Mclienney, baritone: John Walsh, bass. The replacements tor the spring were Meredith Mosher and Jaclc Dawson. Mr. Reyer also has under his direction the boys' and girls' advanced glees and the boys' and girls' elementary glee clubs. BILL ASI-I FGOTBALL OOTBALL, under the leadership of Coach l-lobbs Adams, enjoyed a fairly successful season in l932, staying up with the best of the leaders and finishing the season in a tie for second place. With such threats as Wynn, l-lall, Giddings, and Wescott lost to the team, the pen- nant winning chances of the l-lillers seemed slight, but the enthusiasm was undiminished at the l-lilltop as it is generally known here that Adams usu- ally puts out a good ball team. After several preliminary games in which the l-lillers were victors over iWoodrow Wilson and losers to Pomona, the team opened the Coast Lea- gue season with Alhambra. The underdogs of the game, the Cavemen, came from behind in a thrilling second half to win I2 to 7. The Saints of Santa Ana, Coast League champions, were next on the list with the l-lillers still the decided underdogs. The high hopes of the Cavemen were blasted, however, in the first few minutes of play, when the Saints scored through a rather shalcy defense. From then on it was any- body's game with the Saints coming out on the long end of an exciting 6-O score. The l-lillers next journeyed to Phoenix to defeat the Arizonians, and then on the following Saturday outplayed and outscored PasadeiTa in a tight game in the stadium-the score, I2 to O. Glendale was played the next weelc-end in the north with San Diego coming home the winners of a 20 to 7 victory. The final game of the season was played at Long Beach with the l-lillers coming out on the short side of a 7 to 6 victory for Long Beach. This defeat pulled the Cavemen out of a sure second place to finish in a tie for the same position with Long Beach Poly.' Seventy-four Tl-lE GRAY CASTLE BASKETBALL T LAST the San Diego l-ligh Basketball Team, never before winner of the Coast League championship, finally came through under the tutorship of Mike Morrow to tie with the Long Beach cagers for the championship. Each team won seven games and lost three. San Diego opened the season by defeating Santa Ana twice on the latter's cage floor, after which Glendale trelcked to San Diego where the l-lillers defeated them twice. The Cavemen went next to split a two game series with Alhambra. The following week-end San Diego again journeyed north to brealc even in two games with Pasadena. ln the final games of the season, San Diego met Long Beach here in the gymnasium. After losing the first game, the l-lillers again came through to win the second game and earn the right of a tie for the cham- pionship. Because of the loss of such stars as l-larry Brunner and Jazz Morris through graduation, the San Diego l-ligh cagers gave Long Beach the priv- ilege of competing in the playoffs. The players to receive letters in baslcetball were: Captain Sam Gal- asso, l-larry Brunner, l-lenry Swede Smith, Jazz Morris, Alex Gentles, Chet Smith, Ernest Cuadras, Qliver Day, Bob Chase, Bill Buehlman, and Martin Mendez. Five lettermen will be baclc next year. JUNE' 1933 Seventy-five Al: COACH GLENN BRODERICK D TRACK HE SAN DIEGC l-ligh School Traclc and Eield Team finished second this year to Glendale l-ligh. Under the guidance of Coach Glenn Brod-' erick the team in its first league start defeated Pasadena 75 l-3 to 37 2-3 in the stadium with Captain Morris Pollock carrying away high point honors. Alhambra, because of financial conditions, chose to forfeit to San Diego, giving the l-lillers their second victory. The Cavemen then jour- neyed to l-lunitington Beach to finish second to El Centro in the northern invitational meet. San Diego gained an advantage in the growing San Diego-l-lerbert l-loover rivalry by drubbing the Cardinals 76 to 37 in the stadium. Faust Carmona ran a splendid mile race, outsprinting Lichty of l-lerbert l-loover to win in the fast time of 4:39 3-5. Santa Ana next came to San Diego and was defeated by a score of 7l I-2 to 4I I-2 in the l-lillers' third Coast League victory. With a championship within its grasp the team journeyed to Glen- dale to engage the Blasters. The l-lilltoppers came baclc on the short side of a 7l I-2 to 40 I-2 score. Mushy Pollock was easily the outstanding athlete, copping both sprints while Ambrose Schindler nearly brolce the San Diego record by high jumping 6 feet, I inch. Concluding the current season in San Diego, the l-lillers again trounc- ed Herbert Hoover 73 I-2 to 39 I-2 in the stadium. Seventy-six THE GRAY CASTLE ' W ' 2 21 lit BASEBALL ASEBALI., the spring sport which has brought so many titles to San Diego l-ligh School, started out this season in a big way with ten let- termen baclc. Qpening the Coast League season the l-lillers deteated Pasadena TO to O with Chet Smith pitching a splendid no-hit, no-run game, his second in two years. The Cavemen missed the tamiliar tace ot Captain l-lenry Smith at shortstop due to an injury he received in the l-lerbert l-loover game. Alhambra was next to tall with Smith pitching a two-hit, shutout game while his teammates collected titteen runs ott three Alhambra pitchers. l-lerbert l-loover tied the city championship series with San Diego by deteating the l-lillers 4 to 3. The tinal game was to have been played at a later date. The l-lilltoppers received their tourth victory by a detault trom Long Beach and were assured ot either a championship or a tie with Glendale tor tirst place, the game to be played later. O PROMOTE interest in the girls' athletics and to inspire better sportswomenship has been the aim this year ot the Girls' Athletic Association, one ot the most active organizations during the past semes- ters. Those who held the upper tour chairs this spring were as tollows: President, Selma Young, Vice-President, Ruth Giacollig Secretary, Carroll Gardnerg and Treasurer, La Marjolaine Grant. Without the untiring assist- ance ot Miss Miriam Paine, taculty adviser, however, the club's rating would not be so high. During the latter part ot March, the semi-annual executive board party was staged at Lake Arrowhead. They say, those tew lucky ones, that they had a grand time. The basketball tourney was climaxed by a big spread in the Flat. A committee ot girls prepared the menu and served. On May 6 nine senior girls participated in a play day at Grossmont Union l-ligh. When the weather became warm, the annual hockey party took place. The girls left on Monday atternoon, returning to their respective homes the tollowing Tuesday. On May 6, also, delegates attended a conference at Glendale to discuss current G. A. A. problems. ln all, it was a busy year and a tine organization. Eig,my.is CLASS PRCPHESV S I, MADAM KNOWAL, throw myselt in a trance to look thirty years into the tuture ot the June Class ot l933, l see Nadia l-lerman, an attractive, tall, blonde, society matron, starting a new style by wearing suspenders and shorts, and there's her husband, Albert Watson, a short, grey-haired, old tellow industriously working in his prize petunia garden. My vision tades, ah! now it clears again and l see Olga Chilgren as the tire-eater ot l-larold Greig's one and a halt ring circus and her adoring sweetheart, William Cloes, who is the sword swallowerg also Wilber Von Gunden, the living skeleton. Ah! Ah! the biggest act ever, l-lenry Smith, the tirst man to wrap a snake around his neck and swallow it! Now l see George Mosley, prosperous proprietor ot a beer garden in tlourishing National City, and in his employ is Anita Ambrose, who is the head dance hall hostess, Minerva La Belle, Lois Rees, Barbara Roberts, and Frances Roth, the alluring taxi dancers, and Ray Peters, and l-larrie Whit- ney, the handsome gigolos, who give zest to bored society dames, Mabel Kellerby and Charlotte Ronan. There's Norman Fritchott, Htamous master ot ceremonies, introducing the l-lot-cha Blonde Babies, Constance Bettencourt, Eunice Brothers, and Carrie Gibson. Look! behind the bar stands the charming Maxine Belshe-who would have dreamed her ambi- tions would lead her there! Now l see Paul Edwards, and his manager Quintin De Young, on a soap box imploring the voters to elect him pound master, his slogan is Bigger and better hot dogs at a cheaper price. Also in politics l see Miguel Gonzalez, who is running tor garbage and trash collector, and his appeal to the voters is We all know the depression is on but we want better service and less damage to garbage and trash cans! Ah! ha! there l see Fred Burke, a noted detective, the old sleuth! l-lis latest job was a trek through the wilds ot Tia Juana to hunt tor two lost Mexican jumping beans. Theodore Ptatenhauer, chiet ot police ot Chula Vista is introducing a new Pinkerton to his squad ot sleuths. It is no other than Anna Just, daintily handing out trattic tickets. A new personality appears. It is a girl, no a woman, Dolores Burt, operating an elevator in Ralph Darrow's titty story soap tactory, tollowing her burning ambition to rise. l-lere comes one ot her tellow employees, Junior Searl, one ot the crew ot night watchmen. lNow he can keep his ears clean tor nothing!! l see more people, Ralph Moyer's day nursery and little Robert F. Kerr, Jr., who keeps throwing his lead soldiers at the tussy head nurse, Willard Mayer. Who should walk in but Jerry Torrance coming to get his twins, Jerry Jr. and Maxine.
