PIERSON DIED SEPTEMBER 3, 1929 T A I 9 t .. , .... , N V i ---v We tv--1 2 x - f IENIUIQ A IDLAY RECORD group representing the Senior A dramatic talent turned out this semester for the play tryouts. From this group a capable cast was chosen by Mr. Edmund S ence, and the presentation of Lilies of the Field was a huge success. Through slgilful direction of Mr. Spence, the Senior A's take pride in one of the best class plays ever presented in this high school. The story of Lilies of the Field concerns the lovely twins whose birthday presents from their grandmother are ten yards of pink crepe de chine and a month's visit in London. When the grandmother realizes how much better the second gift is, she decides that the lucky girl will be the one who most attracts a gentleman, an antiquarian, who is invited to lunch. By a careless word the girl's father gives the secret away to one of the twins who, never sailing under false colors, tells the other. They plan their conquests of the antiquarian and swear that no matter what happens, they will always be TWins. ! Donning old-fashioned dresses and acquiring a babyish lisp and a respectful atti- tude, one fortunate twin quite overwhelms the antiquarian and wins the trip to London. Unknown to her, however, he has seen her as she really is, and he leads her through a hectic month of surprising London with trailing skirts, poke bonnets, and long CfalseD curls. Too late she realizes that she loves him and believes that she must go on with the farce or lose him. The play comes to a happy and amusing close when she finally throws aside her make-believe and becomes her real self. This role of Elizabeth, the erring twin, was given a beautiful interpretation by Josephine Francis, and the part of the other twin, very modern, adorable Katherine, was played by Dorothy Funk. Mrs. Rook-Walter, the twin's grandmother was played admirably by Doris Smith, and Harry Hosmer took the part of the antiquarian. Warren Cornwell and Eleanor Agnew played the Vicar and his wife, parents of the twins. The part of a silly, dapper little man of fashion who changed habits and ideas to please Kitty was taken by Lionel Ridout. Other characters were played by Marian Fisher, Lucille Cathcart, Jewell Elliot, and Burt Anderson. l 101 Trlu Arona WILLIAM TINKITR JOSIIPIIINV MORIfIIOUSl'E MARION GRIZVNIE BTRNICII BUCG UFFICEDS ' CLASS UI: 1930 WILLIAM TINKER JOSEPHINE MOREHOUSE Prexiderzt Vine-Prefident MARION GREENE BERNICE BUGG .S'6'CI'f.'fdIj' Treamrer MOTTO HATTAIN THE UNATTAINABLEH CABINET MR. I'1 IITD DY EARLY three years ago this noble edifice of learning was stormed by a group of inexperienced but determined peagreens. The upper classmen were lined up along the sidewalk to meet and greet them. Having survived this very demonstrative welcome, they embarked upon a highly successful high school career. Now they are about to leaveg some to enter the various colleges and universities as underclassmen, others to enter the School of Experience and Hard Knocks as pea- greens. just to start off in the right direction, the whole sophomore class merged to form a football team that won the interclass championship in the spring of 1927. Things ran smoothly for a year and a half, during which the class may have seemed inactive to some observers, it was in fact preparing for the events that were to follow. In the spring of 1929 this apparently dormant class awoke and settled down to work. The sweater committee, headed by Wade Ambrose and consisting of Josephine Morehouse and Bill Tinker, submitted many satisfactory sweaters to the class as a whole for approval. The sweater chosen was a solid blue slip-over with white felt numerals. The present graduating class is the first in many years to have the slip- over type of sweater. The ring committee, headed by Ed Thompson and consisting of Eleanor Agnew and Warren L. Patton, submitted twelve rings to the class for approval, and a gold ring with a silver SD on a blue and white background was selected. It is customary for the Senior A's to give a play each semester, but the Senior B's again showed their originality when they sponsored the play lcebound as a method of raising money for the class activities. As a final memento of their football prowess, the whole Senior class combined to win again the interclass football championship. At the end of the semester, the class sponsored a School Spirit Week. In the assem- bly for that week, Lawrence Pritchard, as president of the Senior B's, presented an eighteen-inch cup to the school, to be awarded at the end of each semester to the class showing the best school spirit. Now the class prepares to leave this, the scene of their many triumphs and happy moments. May they always be as original and successful in later life. -W. L. P. The lettermen, Ashley Bown, Gerard Buchard, Bus Currier, Al DeBus, Joe Gentillalli, Don Giddings, King Hall, Dick Martin, Al Moore, Jack Patterson, Felix Pangeline, Eugene Price, Ed Reed CCapt.D, Ray Russell, Alonzo Rodriguez, Manuel Riverall, Tom Salisbury, Gene Schoettler, Melvel Simpson, Ed Thompson, Irvine Warburton, jim Whitley, and Ted Wilson under the direction of Coach Hobbs Adams, assisted by Mike Morrow, Captain Ed Reed, Manager Lewis Wisler, and Trainer Bob Houston have done splendid work, and our school is proud to have such a fine group of cavemen, The first game of the season started the ball rolling when San Diego won a victory of 32 to O from Glendale in the Gray Castle stadium. The next week the San Diego team journeyed to Alhambra where the score was 39 to 14 in the former's favor. But victories cannot last forever. San Diego suffered its first and only defeat at the hands of the Long Beach Jack-rabbits, the score being 20 to 13. Although the results of the game proved disappointing to all San Diegans, the true sportsmanlike spirit of our cavemen and the student body in general served only to stimulate our en- thusiasm. By the time the Pasadena game was scheduled everyone was full of pep and ready to back his team to the limit. The game played on our opponents' ground was featured by many thrills, and the spectators certainly got their money's worth. There was no scoring made until the last quarter when the Bulldogs made a touchdown. The score was then 6 to 0 Pasadena's favor. However, a game is never finished until the final gun shot, and in the last four minutes our cavemen made two touchdowns, thus making the final score, San Diego 13, Pasadena 6. The effect of the spectacular plays on the grand stand can best be described by Will Rogers' definition of football, A game which makes sane people act like raving maniacs. The Santa Ana game was equally thrilling, a touchdown being made in the last quarter by the cavemen. The final result was a score of 6 to O in favor of San Diego. The game completed a successful football season. The result of the two Non-League games was as follows: San Diego 27 Army and Navy Academy 0 San Diego 21 Bakersfield Jr. College O Each boy on the football team played his part in the games, and cooperation among them resulted in the good scores made. The high scorers of this year's cavemen are: Warburton 42 points for League games 60 points for Non-League games Reed CCapt.D 24 points for League games. 48 points for Non-League games Salisbury 13 points for League games Everyone of the boys on the team outdid himself to make this season's football a success and the team, the captain, the coaches, the manager, and the trainer all deserve the highest praise. MGR. CLA!! I3 FDDTBALI. HIS year's Class B football team, in spite of being the smallest in the history of light-weight football here at the Hilltop, successfully defended the Coast League Championship won in 1928. In two additional post-season games with El Monte and Whittier, they annexed the Southern California Championship. Coach Glenn Broderick successfully coached his fifth Class B team this year and tutored his charges through an undefeated season, the San Diego team scoring 190 points and their opponents 38. A great deal of credit is due Coach Broderick and the members of the team for their hard work and splendid sportsmanship. Through its fine playing it has brought a good deal of honor to the San Diego High School. The only lettermen back from the 1928 team were Captain Curtis May, Jack Wal- lace and Harry Robertson. Those who will receive letters this semester are Jack Dawson, Ray Antrim, Tony Salmon and Lawrence Jones, ends, Bill Graham, Frank Favro, Wesley Holtzinger and John Bassett, tackles, Captain Curtis May, Ray Holt, Jack Wallace, and Arthur Riveroll, guardsg Art Jacobs and Rex Ball, centers, Gene Miller and Fred Brebner, quarterbacks, Morris Schreibman, Fred Gentles and Harry Robertson, fullbacksg Alfred Obayashi, George Wadham, Harold Savage and James Trompas, halfbaclcs. Has he come from Heaven? inquired Johnnie, Yes, dear. No wonder they put him out. -Wfrrkly Edinburgh Sfoix man. 1 1 A married couple were touring in Sicily. At a distance from one of the large towns, the wife said, Think, Albert, if the brigands should come now and take me from you! Impossible, my dear. But supposing they did come and carry me away, what would you say? I should say that the brigands were new to the business-tl1at's all. 1 1 A girl is as strong as her weakest moment. 14-71:- An old farmer and his wife visited the zoo. When they halted before the hippopotamus cage he remarked, admiringly, Darned curious fish, ain't it, ma? That aint a fish, that's a reptile. So the argument began. It progressed to a point of such violence that the old lady began belabor- ing the husband with her umbrella. The old man dodged and ran, with his wife in pursuit. The trainer had just opened the door of the lion's cage, and the farmer popped in. He crowded in behind the largest lion and peered over its shoulder fearfully at his wife, who, on the other side of the bars, shook her umbrella furiously. Coward, she shouted. Coward! 1 1 Your husband is simply wild about you, isn't he? asked Phyllis. Yes, replied Doris. I-le raves about me in his sleep, but the poor absent-minded fellow nearly always calls me by the Wrong name. 1 1 Lady at Bargain Counter: Is my face dirty, or is it my imagination?
