HPEP77 ,L NTHUSIASM is that power which drives men to action. It is 1 that ardent zeal which spurs onward the painter, the sculptor, il the poet and the orator, to substantiate his dreams. Likewise, I ' enthusiasm is behind the motives of the patriot, the hero, and w the soldier. It is the possession of this inborn trait that enables man to lead a life of hope and anticipation, instead of a mere existence from day to day. Master paintings, noble statuary, inspiring poetry and oratory that has impressed men from the earliest period of our history,-all these are the expression of that inherent love for the beautiful which is a part of every man. However, before the artist can express himself he must be enthused with his art. It is also that quality, enthusiasm, that gives to the patriot courage and an intense desire to aid his country. Supernatural strength and valor help the hero and the soldier to perform incredible feats, but not without a large degree of enthusiasm accompanying -them. The student who possesses this trait attends school with hopeful expectations, while his less fortunate companion lives from one period to the next in colorless monotony. Scholastic activities, classroom discussions, and loyal spirit, are evidences of enthusiastic students and teachers who make our school life interesting, instead of a humdrum existence. Enthusiasm is a natural ability, and no one is without some degree of it. It remains for us only to develop this gift and to make the most of that which we have. But in some persons it is spasmodic. They are highly enthusiastic over a project for a short time, but the enthusiasm dies down as quickly as it arose, so that little is really accomplished. Though only one of the traits of character, enthusiasm is an important element without which the greatest success cannot be achieved. Page twelve The Gray Castle
