SgCo1nmanding Officer W Captain W.W. Copeland, Ir. Captain William W. Copeland. lr. was born in Buenos Aires. Ar- gentina in 1944. He entered the Navy in 1965 through the Avi- ation Officer Candidate Program. He graduated from Virginia Pol- ytechnic lnstitute IBSEEI and was commissioned in 1967. lie re- ceived a Master of Science De- gree from University of Southern California in 1980. Designated a Naval Aviator in 1868. he reported to Fighter Squadron ONE I-'lt-'TY ONI-I flying the F-4 Phantom and in 1970. lolned Fighter Squadron l-'ll-'TY ONE for their transition from the F-8 Crusader to the F-4 Phantom. Following instructor duty at the Navy Fighter Weapons School from 1972 to 1975, Captain Cope- land returned to Fighter Squad- ron ONE FIFTY ONE embarked aboard USS MIDWAY tCV 411 homeported in Yokosuka. lapan. ln 1978 he attended the United States Test Pilot School at Hd- wards Air Force Base and upon completion reported to the Naval Air Test Center. Patuxent River. C Maryland. to Captain Copeland joined Fight- er Squadron ONE HUNDRED TWO in luiy 1981 as Executive Officer and assumed command in November 1982. ln March 1984 he joined Commander Task Force SIXTY Staff in Naples.
