November 22, 1982 to begin her thirteenth Mediterranean Cruise in as many years. For SAN DIEGO, 1982 was a good year. And a busy one. She arrived in Norfolk March 15 following a long, hard winter cruise, then hosted the Change of Command when Capt. John B. Doolittle relieve Capt. Robert L. Leuschner, Jr. as Commanding Officer later the same month. ln May, the ship entered its annual mini-yard period, the third of fivephased maintenance Program. Two months later she emerged a rejuvenated vessel, successfully completed sea trials, then steamed for Guantanamo Bay, Cuba for a month of Refresher Training that lasted until mid-September. After retuming home to Norfolk, SAN DIEGO immediately began loadout preparations forthe upcoming winterfspring cruise, and departed for the Med in November to fulfill her mission of replenishing the Sixth Fleet. As On Station AFS in the Mediterranean Sea. SAN DIEGO kept the fleet stocked with everything from nuts and bolts to comply bars, and even relueled ships, too. The 581-foot long ship steamed more than 35,000 miles, replenished 142 Navy ships, U.S. embassies in Egypt, Greece and Israel and delivered about 20.4 million pounds of cargo by connected and vertical replenishment methods. The floating groceryf hardware store processed 40,000 requisitions, distributed 1.2 million spare parts and fed the entire SIXTH FLEET. ln addition, SAN DlEGO'S SIXTH FLEET Material Control staff issued 2,272 emergency spare parts. Helicopter Combat Support Squadron SIX, Detachment TWO provided the air support for vertical resupplies, lifting about 60,000 tons of supplies to customer decks during approx'mately 590 flight hours. Det TWO was particularly impressive during SAN DlEGO'S monthly total vertical replenishments of the U.S. peacekeeping force in Beirut, Lebanon. With many fond thoughts of liberly and Romeo in memory, USS SAN DlEGO'S six- month Mediterranean Sea cruise concluded Anned Forces Day, Saturday, May 21, 1983.
