FRONT ROW LEFT TO RIGHT: Mitch McComb, Scott Seavers, Greg Thomasson, Tom Kramer. Sophomore Basketball 71-72 The sophomore basketball team of the 71-72 season was unlike previous years in many ways. The big difference was teamwork and 5 irit, both in games and at practice. Another eciding factor durin Crestview League competition was the a dition of sophomore newcomer to Triton basketball forward Mike Stavio, who came down from Stan DiMag- io's IV squad to score the most points in eague play for the B's - 180! The sophomores started out very well. Their first season victory at Anaheim was vindic- tive of their successful season. They set a record for soph. win-Iosses, breaking the 13- 12 70-71 record to 14-11. This in itself was a high point. The sophs held their 2nd annual basketball tourney here in the Triton gym, playing such teams as Bolsa Grande, Mission, Viejo, and Valencia. In the Christmas Tournament tDec. 27-301 at Santa Ana High School, the Tritons beat Kennedy and Western in the first two days and then lost to Los Alamitos in the championship bracket in the third round. Under the able coaching of Fred Newhart, the Triton Bees ended a great basketball story with an 8-6 league mark and a new record for season win-Iosses which indicates a pretty good season. '2 'i t I .f .I 2.; i i i .2 Under Coach Stan Dimaggio, the San Clemente 1971-197291.V. basketball team compiled an overall record of 12-12. Led by juniors Tom Hoffman and Ross tTomahawki Wilson and sophomores leff tShadesi Foreman, Dave Hassal, and Bob tCunneri Yonder, the team placed fourth in league play with a record of 6-8. . oi-u'.-AA Coach Dimaggio was pleased with his team's record because as he said, most teams we played averaged about 2 inches more in height . Coach also pointed out that this was probably his youngest team overall, but was still one of the best shooting teams he has coached. He praised his teams effort as they fought each game as if it were for the league Championship. At the post banquet, Bob Yoder and jeff Foreman took honors being named co-captains and co-most valuable players. joe Hernandez was named most in- spirational and Don Cook most Improved to close out this years l.V. season. spoms 87
