A faculty committee worked with the librarian, Mr. La- ver and the principal, Mr. Taylor to set up new procedures which would overcome the library's problem areas. The new library is now more student and study oriented. The library was physically reorganized II during the library moritorium into academic and study areas. In order to move the stacks all the books had to be removed from the shelves which was a feat in it- self. The reorganized Iibrarx has a separate reference area, fiction area, non fiction area, study area, and magazine area. In addition to the physical re- organization the library also had a face-Iift. Indoor plants, student and teacher art, and a Changeable .an M 1511 ll 111 1.11 display showcase are now part of the new look. A zerox machine H w ' . . ' f ,. ' , V , w, e was added for student conveni- h ence. The best thing about the newh library is that it works. Students who always wanted to use the li- brary for study and research now can. Many new books were pur- chased to add to the expanse of knowledge the library offers. The library is now a library. xwwmt C. The year started out with the A53 sponsored Back-to-School dance. The A58 has sponsered a large number of other activities this year since then including concerts by Taj Mahal and Shuffle, the P.O.W. forum, Listening Ears , and many others. The greatest amount of the Council members' time is taken up in their individual semester projects. Each semester the members are in charge of at least one major school activity. Some of these include Homecoming, Greek Week, reconstruction of the A58 Park, Math Field Day, Power-Puff football, Open Cam- pus, and many, many others. The coun-members time is not only taken up in his own project planning, but in helping the other members in their projects. Three times a week the Council meets to discuss various problems that come up on the A58 budget and student concerns, and to try to find ways to improve the school. The other two days are taken up in the House of Representatives, Senate or ICC. The Council is definitely a busy group of concerned students. Elena Koster, Mike Powell, Mike Young. L. The Phoenix Triton Staff Story The new year brought to San Clemente a new Triton ad- visor, Mrs. Mary Lynn Hartman, At the beginning of the new semester, there were no signups for news aper pro- duction. Mrs. Hartman visited advanced Engish Classes to recruit staff members. Twenty-six students gave their names as being interested in staff assignments. Of that number only eight showed up for a meetin to actually go to work. Ultimately, only four were a le to make the schedule adjustments which allowed them to be- come regular staff members. At the beginning of the semester no money was budget- ed for publication of a school newspaper. ASB Officers conducted a straw poll and determined students need and want for a newspaper. Finally, $1,000 of student body funds was pled ed to keep the aper alive. Mrs. Hart- man committe the staff tthougE non-existenti for an- other $700 in funds to be raised from advertising. The Triton staff of four re ular members and two or three volunteer, no-credit stu ents met every deadline of the fall production schedule, writing, editing, pasting-up, and distributing 2200 copies of the Triton every other Fri- ORCANIZA TIONS 32 day. In addition, in their spare timei' they sold enough advertising land created the ads themselvesi to produce nearly $500 of income for the Triton account. Semester schedule changes brought the staff to another crisis. Although they had doubled their enrollment the first day of the semester lnow having twoi, there was a critical need for regular staff members if the Triton was to survive. Issue number eight was published and distri- buted on Friday, Feb. 18. Unless more staff members were to be found this may have been the last Triton for 1971-72. Classes were polled and questionaires were issued in all English classes on the pli ht of the paper. An estimated 1900 students returned the questionaires. On the basis of tabulated responses the paper appeared to be safe. The class enrollment is now approximately 20 and are ready to maintain thejournalistic quality of the Triton. The new Triton staff is ictured at right. Missing from pic- tures are: Patrice Keley, Mike Anderson, Karen Elliot, Lyn Ellen Hicks, Kori Miller, Kelly Smith, john Driscoll, Barney Slenning, Sandi Estep, Holly Fort and janet lensen. The game was a thriller in which either team could have broken the game open if they had just had the right breaks. Une fortunately, Brea did. The SC. defensive unit highlighted the game. Everyone worked together to stop Brea with the exception of one drive, The collapse of the defense for just that one moment was disastrous because the only score of the game came about as a result. $.C. The defensive unity also had another fine game allowing only seven points to be scored against them for the second game in a row. Later on in the year, S.C. was informed that they would have to forfeit the game because of the schotastic eligibility of one of its players, Even though they had to forfeit, the players and coaches still considered the game a victory. 23.3.. .. The sophomores started out very well. Their first season victory at Anaheim was vindic- tive of their successful season. They set a record for soph. win-Iosses, breaking the 13- 12 70-71 record to 14-11. This in itself was a high point. The sophs held their 2nd annual basketball tourney here in the Triton gym, playing such teams as Bolsa Grande, Mission, Viejo, and Valencia. In the Christmas Tournament tDec. 27-301 at Santa Ana High School, the Tritons beat Kennedy and Western in the first two days and then lost to Los Alamitos in the championship bracket in the third round. The Class of '72 I I This year's graduating seniors have much to look back on. As underclaSsmen they be- , came acquainted with high school activities. As juniors the class of '72 began to dominate school affairs. During the junior year, the seniors owned the spirit stick most of the year, won the first annual powder-puff game from the seniors, and concluded the year with a memorable prom. This year has climaxed eVentful high school years. This year 's seniors ' have continued such senior traditions as senior parking spaces, senior weekend, senior picnic, and senior grad week. The Sophomore Year: Spirit Mixed With Regret ,1 After a freshman year of becoming accustomed to new surroundings and different experiences, the class of 74 settled down to find out more about themselves. The re- velations were not very surprising. The sophomores showed potential to be one of the greatest classes at SCHS, and this possibility was proven further by the ac- tivities of the class cabinet. SPIRIT was the factor that distinguished the sophomore Tritons and kept them to- gether. It was a dominant atmosphere that prevailed at class meetings, assemblies, and athletic contests. The sophomores did just about anything to prove that they were number ONE! Usually not only are sophomores the rowdiest class, but often times they are the most apa- thetic. Not true with this exceptional group. The class of 74 showed several times during the year that they really did care, and about more than themselves. It was a hard- working group of sophomores that initiated the CHICA SOPHOMORE 194 fund for a fellow Triton, seriously injured in an auto ac- cident. Partly through the efforts of many other sopho- mores, people Were ufged to vote for the tax continu- ance in March, and undoubtedly, no one at SC will forget the group of sophomores that persuaded the seniors to give up the senior quad, in favor of having an A58 park. But, it is with sadness that the year ends for members of the sophomore class. From now on, everything the class does will be in two groups. The class of 74 will see each other as rivals instead of fellow classmates, because next year they will either be the original Tritons, or else new Dolphins. They will either wear the traditional red and black or the newly elected royal blue, light blue, and sil- ver. Two seprate identities will be established. Whether or not the class will ever be together is unknown, but one thing is definite-the class of 74 WILL NEVER BE THE SAME AGAIN! t V WA. ,7 i, i 3.: ,y: .' -' Dave Abelsen Tom Ahern Helena Alarcon Cu Allen jody Anderson Tom Anderson Mike Anderson jeff Halleron M i e Arnofd David Atkinson Beatrice Abuilar L3, ? This year's Freshman class led by Dayona Lovemark, president, Lisa Castle, vice president, April Dean, treas- urer, Diane Witt, secretary, and Toni Toumanian, historian, was active in many school activities. During Spirit Week the Freshmen sold victory buttons and won the penny drive. For their noisy support of Ice Cameron during the pie eating contest, the Freshman won the Spirit Stick; unfortunetlyloe finished second. The Fresh- men class was presented with a 50 dollar check by the P.T.S.A. for recruiting the most new members. High- lighting the Freshmen year was the Freshmen sponsored Harlem Clowns basketball game against the S.C. Faculty. A delighted crowd saw the Clowns beat the Facultyputting on a great show. In athletics, the Freshman football team finished a strong third and the Frosh basketball team won their last eights games after Black Tuesday to capture the league championship. The Freshmen were well represented on other teams as Bob Spiers played Sophmore football, Scott Severs played Sophmore basketball, and Keith Marr, jerry Nelson, and Steve Ripple played IV baseball. In addition to class meetings, the freshmen were represented by john Boyle, loe Cameron, jeff Easley, Nell Paine, Cindy Pearson, Leslie Rowe, and lanet Spe- shock. 206 FRESHMAN x 'wxxw KW xxmwmmmmwmmmmwmmmwm tMWNMw-Nmammwwwm Wm M- ,Ati .
