Elegance and beautytopped off the week as Cricket Bewsy was crowned Homecoming Queen. A week that included everything from Slave Trades to Mr. and Miss irresistible contest was acclaimed by Mr. Drager, student activities director as, Easily the best Home- coming week this school has ever seen. Beginning with the Pep club penny drive on Monday, November 2, the week lasted until Friday, November 6 with the last event being the Homecoming Dance. Along with the penny drive the APS began to sell king sized Triton Spirit ribbons on Monday. The Slave Trades began on Tuesday, the top sale being the 36 dollar auctioning off of Barbara Cheatum. Wandering Gypsies invaded the campus and told fortunes while the other activities continued. The annual Mum sale was sponsored by the Girl's League, on Wednesday, and then the big CAR PARADE AND DOWN- TOWN RALLY , sponsored by the Student Council, began. After the judging of the floats, at 3:30, all the floats and bicycles paraded through downtown San Clemente under a police escort to the Plaza. Happiness reigned as people participated in such activities as tricycle races, whipped cream fights, and tug of wars between the classes. On Thursday, the Slave Auctions continued as did the Pep Club's and AFS' activities. But a new activity started this year, an activity which reflects the concern of the young people for their environment- The Ecology Club TOTAL CAMPUS CLEANUP CAMPAIGN. Friday night, the scene was set. All week long there was joy,hap- piness and content, and it built to a spectacular climax. Then the time came. It was halftime of the game against Mission Viejo High. All the candidates were introduced. May I have the envelope please, requested John Russell, Senior class president. The suspense built. Theatrics applied by John Russell made the spectators hold their breath. Then as he started to announce the Princesses, eliminating one by one until he had one left. Cricket Bewsy had won. Complementing the night, the football team had a powerful victory, and the Homecoming Dance commenced. Reigned over by the beautiful Queen, the festivities concluded. m1: ' O W-mwaxuxwmww Rd .. ,.--,...-mk w w w . , .. , w-W-H: J .1. ?WMWW 5; :4 - ,' , '7. u... mww- W' . , .1... a m '. U ; '. The final achievement, a motion picture designed to tell the story of San Clemente High School 71 , was worked on by 15 enthusiastic members. Advised by Mr. lssacs, the club also presented a photo contest, and a film contest, and for the benefit of the football team, the club shot films of each week's game. The deadline for the photo contest was in early December, and the winning pictures were displayed in the cafetorium. A total of 21 dollars in prize money was handed out. Photography is a medium for personal expression, and educational and scientific tool, and it's fun. There is a great history and culture supporting the Soviet Union, and we plan to bring it to the surface. stated Jim Hess, the president of the Russian Club, and language enthusiast. A camping trip, attendance at a performance by the Bolshoi Ballet, a viewing of several movies, and Russian oriented dinners were some of the activities that this year's Russian club took part in. I was startled by the number of students who were interested in the culture of the Soviet Union, explained Jim Hess. When asked about the reason for this enthusiastic interest Jim rationalized, I suppose that we hear so much about the Soviet Union that it is natural to be currious about what we are taught so little about. During the school year of 1970-71 the purpose of AFS was to raise 850 dollars to send a stu- dent of San Clemente High School to a foreign country. Being a member of this club is a prime opportunity for high school students to learn about the different cultures around the world along with getting to know our own three exchange students from Finland, Germany, and Peru. stated Brandon Birtcher, the president of the club. In order to raise the money the club sponsored a progressive dinner with Laguna Beach High School, a dance after a football game, and a Valentine Day Semi-formal dance. During Club Week the club organized one day to inform the students about AFS. Advised by Mrs. Watt, the ranking members were Brandon Birtcher, president; Hartmut Eic- her, first vice president; Sabina Astete, second vice president; Eeva Hara, third vice president; and Steve Hockett, secretary-treasurer. This years membership seemed extremely excited and eager to earn the money. added Bran- don. Hartmut Eicher Sabina Astete H: U- America Makes Three New Friends San Clemente High was introduced to three new friends this year. Eeva Hara, Hartmut Eicher, and Sabina Astete took little time in learning the customs of the country. Their pleasant per- sonalities enriched the experience of the students of San Clemente. Eeva Hilkka Maria Hara was born December 4, 1953. Her birth- place was Helsinki, Finland, the land of sixty thousand lakes, the land of pine forests. She was the seventh child of nine children. Apparently she was used to being around a lot of people, and she showed it this year with her outgoing personality. Her American family was the Hunt family of Capistrano Beach. When asked to comment on her stay in America, she replied, I am having the most exciting year of my life living in California, experiencing the country, the people, and the life style. I don't want to think about the sad day when I have to leave all my friends in America. Hartmut Eicher, born in Velheim, West Germany, November 15, 1952, lived all his life until this year on the edge of the Blue Dan- ube. He has one brother and two sisters. 1 came to meet new people and to live with different customs, says Hartmut. And I'm enjoying and have enjoyed every minute of the stay. Hartmut lived with the Hocketts while here in San Clemente. Sabina Astete was our guest from Lima Peru. She was born Aug- ust 29, 1953, and she is the third child of a family of five children. During her stay in San Clemente she became a part of the Rhoads family. She shared many interest with her sister Vicky Rhoads. I have found a great many similarities between my two 'families' and have had a wonderful experience in this country through the great and unique AFS program. To turn the phrase, the AFS guests gave us all a wonderful ex- perience through the unique AFS program . 1. Scott Stevenson 2. Layton Haise 3. Juan Luna UresJ 4. Craig Ruscher WresJ 5. With Mr. Robins acting as advisor, the club sponsored activities such as Days of the Ab- surd . Which included many ridiculous con- tests exemplified by the contest where a liquid soap was whipped to suds and placed in a tub and the contestants guessed how many hours it would take the suds to disappear. Chess is a very misunderstood game. Most people think that it is very slow and dull, but ac- tually once you get involved the game becomes very exciting. The fall play, Up the Down Staircase, was a milestone in SCHS technical and dramatic achievements. The production was light, quick and entertain- ing. Cindy Johnson, playing the part of Sylvia Barrett, had her hands full as she tried to negotiate her way around and about the students and administration. The play offered its audience a fun-filled evening, one in which real students, real teachers, and real administrators saw themselves at their best and worst. Later in the year, during February and March, Sound of Music excited the campus and community. Through the efforts of Mrs. Sykes, co-ordinator and technical advisor, Mr. Moe, artistic director, and Mr. Dastrup, music director, and a cast and crew numbering in the eighties, SCHS had a musical production to be proud of. Through all four evening performances standing ovations showed the appreciation of the aud- ience as the thespians were bathed in applause. It was, as some said, a professional performance in a pro- fessional theater. The latter remark referred to the redesigning of the seating before the stage. For the Drama Club and those who enjoyed their work, it was a very good year. The officers - Chuck Raht, president; Kevin Kincaid, vice president; Ronny Kutcher and Kathy Graehl, recording and corres- ponding secretaries; and Jim Ashbrook, treasurer-would be the first to say so. , 3 $iiix? : 5.2.x If? 533$s m iES i$$ x, $333 Ushers Club Members Attend Ceremonies at Western White House There were three official students representing San Clemente High School who attended the Stamp Dedication ceremonies at the Western White House. Unity and loyalty to the group have developed the Madrigal Singers ,, into on of the most honored and respected singing group in Southern California. The Madrigals have performed at the 99 Club Convention, Corona Del Mar Madrigal Festival and at over twenty other clubs and conven- tions. The group was selected in the last week of June 1970 by Mr. Dast- rup on blend and attitude. The second of the outstanding groups was the Men's Quartet. The Quartet was comprised of four senior boys who had a fervent inter- est in music. They sing all types of music, and often used guitar as an accompaniment. They have performed at the Ir. Miss Pageant, CAA Father-Daugh- ter Banquet, and the February meeting of the Latin-American Club. The four boys were re-organized in January and this year's quartet consisted of Mario Mainero, first tenor; Steve Hockett, second tenor; Steven Sharp, Baritone; Richard Bunkall, Ball. It gaveea chance to girls to run 50 miles in 50 days, not to mention the opportunity to keep fit and have fun while doing so. G.A.A. is a very active club on campus, and is one in which the giris of the school have an opportunity to get involved in many activities. They also have a chance to become very involved in sports, some of which are competitive. The girls in G.A.A. work together. They learn to face responsibility. Their vigilant pres- ence at games and rallies helped push our Tritons on to victory. Their spirit, as always, was infectious. And more than one person said of the SCHS spirit this last year- It was a great year for spirit. The girls put in long hours, merely attending the games, not to mention the time they spent mustering up and encouraging the rest of the student body to yell and yell and YELL! Though we don't win every game, one Pep Club member announced, we let the teams know that we're behind them. Both coaches and team members acknowledged the importance of having school spirit and school support. Thanks girls. 4W ' H7 ,, W w, mm . mam Emu m .- uwmmw, m, . ..; ':51 W m v imrrv mix? 3553:... . I am sure that you will read this annual with mixed emotions. In many cases, you probably feel you could have done more to , fquulI your dreams, your ambitions, your capabilities -this his only human nature. In reality, most of you were extremely productive. You made the most out of your opportunities. You ' participated in many positive ways in sdIooI connected activ- ities. You contributed to a very successful school year. But, one cannot lobk back over a year just completed with- out honestly thinking about the unaccomplished, the undone. If you failed yourself by lack of accomplishment this is unfor- tunate, but not a disaster. There is you, the individual you. What you are capable of tomorrow, is contained in you today. There is a significant difference between what you are today and what you can become' In the future. Part of the process of ' education is to help each person develop an identity and re- lationship with himself as an indi vidual to the world, the culture, and other people. The high school years provide a time for young adults to develop a- feeling of who you are. This is a time to try different personalities and behavior to discover the person you feel the most comfortable being. Maturity comes when a person is able to express his real seIf without fear of being different or havingto conform to the'irnage of. peer groups. The Class of 1971 is well on the way of having developed a real identity, a real you. Good luck to you seniors, in your FUTURE ENDEAVORS. Coach Eades Coach Niedhart Football The football season of 1970 resulted in two things: One, the Tritons ended with a winning season for the first time since 1967. And two, they established themselves as a power in the Crestview league. Enthusiastically supported by the student body, the team beat Laguna Beach, Foothill, Tustin, Mission Viejo, and El Modena. When the season was over and the dust cleared, the Tritons were in third place. Following the old adage - A good offense needs a good defense -the San Clemente defense was feared throughout the league. Led by such headhunters as Tim Duvall, Ray Cannavo, and Nolen Boyer, the defense was not only efficient but powerful. And led by quarterback Keith Gibson, the offense did its job too. It provided a powerful running machine. Clark Jarrett, Tom Morris, Bob McNamara, and Ray Cannavo compared with any runners in the league. Of course, Gibson's potent passing also accounted for many of the scores. The prime receivers, Anderson and Allavie snatched many out of the air. The crowning achievement for the Tritons was beating second place El Modena in the last game of the season. The Tritons were spoilers. I think that the victory over El Modena could be considered the greatest accomplishment ever acquired by a San Clemente football team, stated interior defensive lineman John Gligo. 1970 was a very good year for football for the San Clemente Tritons. This year's team had some colorful nick- names. Clark Jarret was referred to as little Bruiser and Joe Lopez was the Human Muscle . San Clemente's Dick Anderson, who fin- ished his fourth year of wrestling, went along with Ralph Braun to the CIF finals. Both faired well. The individual records were good. Ralph Braun, however, won the greatest number of matches. Clark Jarret was known as the scrappiest on the team. And John Romero won every match this year by using his favor- ite hold, the cradle hold . Bill Madden, who played first string center during the football season, set a record by pinning his opponent in the first 20 seconds of the first round. The outstanding underclassmen were Duncan Wilson, Mark McCartan, Pat Linebach, Scott Bruce, and Rich Talcott. Veteran performers Dana King and Tim Springer gathered the most points for the fighting Varsity team. Joel Hartman and senior Wayne Burris were the co-captains of this year's colorful team. To top off the year, six Tritons qualified for the difficult CIF championships at Long Beach State. How much more can a team do? Apparently some- thing more-in the area of water sports-for next year the Tritons hope to star in water polo for the first time. Childhood Days i L t I fix? ; g.- President Vice President Secretary Clark Jarret Don Steffenson Mary Sheppard Juniors Class of Treasurer Jody Tyson Led by Clark Jarrett, the class of 72 was one of the most active and successful junior classes ever to at- tend San Clemente High School. According to Clark, The one key person to the success of the class of 72 was Mary Shepard, the secretary. The big event, of course, was the junior-senior dance. This was the one activity that took the most time and effort of the juniors, but they still had time for candy selling, and various other activities. Junior classofficerstakeabreak from their busyschedules. A junior sponsored dance after a football game, which netted about $240, was so exciting that they were forced to refuse admission due to the capacity crowd. The Powder Puff Game, the first game of its sort, was such a huge success that it will probably stand as a tradition in years to come. That football contest between the senior girls and junior girls netted ap- proximately $320. Incidently, the junior girls won. The junior class cabinet consisted of Clark Jarret, president; Don Steffenson, vice president; Jody Tyson, treasurer; and Mary Shepard, secretary. Probably the whole junior class in the year of 71 could be summed up with this statement by Clark JarrettWThe class of 72 has the spirit. Jeff Maughan , the Freshman Class president was aware of this as well as anyone in the class. He realized as others did that their are growing pains to being a freshman. We are here to organ- ize and to prepare for the next three years and we want to make this class the best class this school has ever seen. Those were the goals of the class. If they will hold true to their ideals remains to be seen. If their first year is any indication of the years to follow, they will succeed. The freshmen involved themselves in many activities, originating and sponsoring and generating excitement. They held dances, fund raising sales and showed their spirit at the rallies and games. We're ready to learn, one freshman stated. This statement was made in reference to the Jay Wentz Get Involved activities. Through them the freshmen had an opportunity to see how upper classmen get things done. As with all beginnings, the freshmen had to feel their way to success. Going into their sophomore year, they are pre- pared to take part in molding the campus to suit their fellow students. They are also ready to assume their responsibili- ties as members of their high school community. 74 is looking forward. 2....
