jhe fnae of fhe .jsrlungriw U took place on December 10th, 1965 as the fifth annual version of the San Carlos varsity basketball team was unleashed on the Aragon Dons. The North- erners were left with a sour taste in their mouths, finding themselves behind 9-0 after one minute of play, The final score was 69-43 and the long season had begun. San Carlos waited a week and then dumped the scrappy Sunnyvale jets, 63-51 for their first road victory and second overall victory of the young season. Christmas vacation found the Dons in San Mateo and Burlingame on successive days. San Mateo fell hard, 59-52, on a cold morning in an equally cold gym. The Panthers, somewhat overmatched, were bombed, 80-41, on the next day. On December 27, the Dons went back to Sunnyvale to open the Holiday Tournament against Camden at 10 A.M. The team from Camden fought hard, staying with SC through the third quarter. The Dons finally prevailed by the score of 72-56. SC moved into prime time against Fremont, the following night. They also moved into the record books and the semi-finals by winning, 89-55. The Dons next faced the Menlo-Atherton Bears. M-A, on a 6 game winning streak. was out for blood, and went down 74-60 only after putting up a good battle. PHOTOS FIRST TOP: SCers-Covey, Buickeroord. Farley in- between opponents. The Braves featured 6 foot, 9 inch Dennis Awtrey, and were rather formidable. SC fell behind early, and by the third quarter were trailing by 14 points. A late-game rush sent the game into overtime at 68-68. Rick Brandeburg of the Dons sent SC ahead, 74-72, with 8 seconds left in the overtime, and that was the game. The Dons ended their non-league play with an 8-0 record. They were ranked high in the state, and were favorites to win the S.P.A.L.
