Most of the time our performers are in classrooms, studying for the big time. But certain places, like the quad, rowdy pep rallies, and those suspenseful football games are made for enjoyment. This set is one of the few places you can actually learn something and have fun at the same time. if? 51 53,1 Top: One of the first things newcomers to Cardinal City notice is our colorful vending machine enclosure. Action, the bell rings, A mad stampede ensues on the B building door and every where else on campus. A disaster movie, perhaps? No, it's just lunch. The rush continues to the individual stampeder's favorite on or off-campus hangout. Where do our studio groupies hang out? Well, some prefer to dine in the luxurious quad or even in our own cafeteria. Others rush for a quick bite to one of the elite fast- food franchises around school. But the scene always has the same ending. It's back to the set before the bells ring to get in another two hours shooting. E1 -if L--. Algebra, American History and Physiology ran a close race when it came to winning the prize for the most difficult class for SBHS students. The majority of students plan to make something of themselves, and so they try to learn even their hardest subjects. SBHS provides varied learning experiences which utilize excellent teachers and facilities combined with individual student effort. Above: Kimjones gets some help from Mrs. Browne Producers And Directors Our Cardinal City directors really know the plot. They're always participating in every take, constantly guiding the students. They are also active in off-screen activities. Our directors won't accept anything but the very best performances from the cast. There are the strict, demanding types who won't tolerate any nonsense, but there are also the ones who tend to specialize in comedy. In any case, they all merit special oscars. SBHS pep rallies are rated fl in the district, thanks to the pep band and spirited students. The teachers are also involved in these activities which help show their pride in our school. Trendsefiers Whatever image the Berdoo players wanted to project, there was something to accom- modate them. Fashion-wise, a wide variety of fads emerg- ed. This year's wardrobe included everything from preppy angora sweaters to punk stripes and checker prints. Vans also made an ap- pearance with more daring color combina- tions and prints. For entertainment, there was the cursed Rubik's Cube. For some, it was just a few seconds of work, but for most, it was a hob- by which lasted all year! Rubick's Cubes were found in many of the reacher's and studenr's hands because of their ability to relieve tension, Evergbodg wears designer jeans and boai iennis shoes - Jackie Doucei-ie Vanderbilfs. This season our band, better known as THE BIG RED MACHINE, livened up sports events, pep rallies, and parades, but there were also set-backs. The band director hired at the beginning of the year left after only two weeks, followed by a temporary replacement, Mrs, Susan Miller, who stayed until yet another substitute, Mrs. Karen Cook, came. Finally, Mr. Russell Schissler arrived, and the pro- blem was settled. When asked to comment on the situation, student director, Tom Flores said, Con- sidering all the confusion we had this year, I think the band did a pretty good job. Kata enjoys swimming, knitting, and going to the movies. Kata says she came here to learn more English. juan Cardenal, another foreign student, comes to us from Zaragoza, Spain. juan is not sponsored by any specific organization, he came on his own.juan would like to stay in the United States and attend Loma Linda Medical School. He plans to pursue his career here in the U.S. juan played on the Varsity Football team as their kicker. Some of juan's hobbies are reading and writing novels. Lennart Abel from Duisburg, Germany also came to us on his own and is living with friends here, Lennart plans to go back to Germany to go to college but is undecided about his field of study. Lennart enjoys classical music, going to church and playing both piano and pipe organ. Our American Field Service student is Marlou Haefner. Marlou is from Hanover, Germany. She is living with Miss Hempstead our Vice Principal. Marlou heard about AFS through her school and decided to check it out. When she told her mother about the opportunity she was pleased because she had also been an exchange student. Marlou is not sure about her future ambitions right now. She says she's going ro wait awhile to decide. Marlou enjoys drama and classical music. 22 We at SBHS will never forget the memories these special people have given us. 1 fx . J X 4 g.... After being ac- cepted into the club, the members must con- tinue to be active. The purpose of the club is to render service to the community and school. The club was started by Winfred Poss, a P.E. teacher, in 1938. She wanted to start a service organization for outstanding scholars. S.B.H.S. was the first school to have a Sobobans club in the district and from here it spread to other schools. The name comes from an Indian tribe called the Sobobans who used to live in this area. There is an old legend associated with the club which tells of two girls, walking in the rain, who shared their umbrella with another girl who didn't have one. The club has several symbols - an Indian head symboliz- ing the old Indian legend, an umbrella sym- bolizing unity of friendship and a rose which stands for inner beauty. Sobobans helped with women's club's ac- tivities, the PTA International Festival, sang at convalescent homes during the holidays, and held their annual Faculty Feed. ai ea! 556 Marlou Haefner, Makeba Allen, Suzanne Olivas, Veronica Petty, Kim Kiesel, Katie Varden meet with Ms.johnson to plan upcoming activities. .arlou Haefner, AFS Student from Germany, was active in many campus programs including AFS, Sobobans, YRO TIMES and TYRO '82 Yearbook staffs, and Student Council. At graduation exercises, each honoree presents a speech to their classmates, parents, and faculty. Above: Kim Thomas, 54.0 Valedictorian. Being Valedicrorian is not something that l've ever dreamed of. It just happened that way. My friends ask me, how do you get A's all the time? I tell them I take each class separately. I just worry about what I learn instead of worrying about my grades or GPA. What is ironic is that when I got B's in classroom work I learned so much more than when I received A's. One misconception people have is that Valedictorians are brainiacs and bookworms . These labels are not necessarily true. In my case, neither of them are. I'm no smarter than any student at SBHS, for I know a great many students who, if they would have applied themselves half as much as l've applied myself, would have had twice as much success as any student could hope for. These are the students with extenuating cir- cumstances . . .but that's another story. Finally I would like to say that l've never relinquished any fun or partying and, to maka a long story short, the main reason that I'm Valedictorian is not because I'm a brainiac or bookworm but because I was con- sistent for four short years of my life. 123 Lasi Performances Are Prepared bu Hard-working CommiHees Senior Week CommiHee K Bark row: Kata Perlhagen, Dina Sposito, Nancy Hubert, Brooks Gresham, Debbie Malone, Laureen Hubachek, Kathy Murdoch Caryn Schobert, Suzy Nassralla, jackie Doucette, Andrea Huffman, Pam Scott. Q i Do You Think Tha+'s Spirit .T In the last years the friendly rivalry bet- ween the high schools in town became more and more strained and less understandable. There are people who wonder whether cut- ting down trees, spraying slogans on walls, painting school symbols, and taking away Pacific's anchor is the direction competition between schools should take. Wouldn't it be better to compete on the sports field than in the quad? And isn't it kind of mean to cut down trees which are living elements of our environment? Why do students come in the dark ofthe night and do damage to other campuses - is it a harmless prank or senseless vandalism? I 3569-am r . Whar I+ Feels Like To Be A Freshman As Freshmen, it being our first year in high school, we are considered still wet behind our ears. Most of us come with our heads filled with many questions, scared, confused, and depressed because we are in a totally new situation. We are in a totally new situa- tion because we are surrounded by new faces of teachers and people of all ages. But despite all this, we are anxious to begin this new and exciting excursion. Fifty percent of all freshmen are pushed around and made fun of by upperclassmen just because we are freshmen. There is nothing we can do about this situation ex- cept scream and yell softly for it is a custom each year to do this to freshmen. So next year, it's going to be our turn to push around next year's Freshmen. Berdoo's team of dedicated secretaries serve students and staff alike. Their workload includes enrolling new students, handling messages, typing suspen- sions and expulsions, acting as an informa- tion center, doing the federal survey cards, typing the bulletin and keeping the profi- ciency, attendance, health and permanent records. The thing I think we all like the most is working with the staff and students, said Margaret Marinis, the Vice-Principal's secretary, that is, as long as they don't all come in at the same time. Marie Nelson, the Registrar, and Joanne Burling, SIP clerk, agrees. But of course the biggest reason is the money, they jokingly added. Go around the Administration Building and you'll find the Counseling Office. This year Mrs. Dorothy Martin has taken over the vacancies left by Mr. Gould and Mr. Escobar, who were part-time counselors and have returned to their classrooms. Mrs. Head of the counseling staff, Mr. Christleman said, We're lucky to have a very dedicated and concerned group of counselors. This year they've tried to make themselves more available. The new scheduling system developed by the counselors was better than last year's and gave students more say in what classes they took because they ran for them. Mr. Christleman remarked that it's hoped more of the paper work will be handled by com- puters in the future so that the staff will have more time for the students. Martin was a Title I advisor before becom- ing a counselor. The Action In Foreign Affairs The Foreign Language Department, another victim of the budget pinch, went through some drastic alterations. Mr. Galarza, a new, but nevertheless popular teacher here at Ber- doo, gave some opinions on the status of the department: - On changes in the department: I think the most obvious change was me . . . I've found a desire for a third and fourth year Spanish class fcut from the program this yeari, and I intend to start them again. - On students: I noticed some reluctance in class participa- tion at the beginning of the year, but generally there is a strong positive feeling for language. - On the future of foreign language at S.B.H.S.: Perhaps more extra-curricular activities are needed to reflect the multi-cultural element in school. Mr. Wheeler has taken over as Student Council advisor, Mr. Vitek started teaching the Consumer Education classes 2nd semester. Social Studies is a course that all students at Berdoo know about since it is required for all 4 years of high school. This causes a pro- blem sometimes, according to Mr. Burke who teaches American History because the kids get shifted around more than they should and this can be harmful. But it can also be good because it provides a line of communication between faculty and students which is open to every student. Some of the problems have, of course, been financial but other include the fact that there's been a change in the average student. Says Mr. Burke, They've gone from respectful, caring citizens to kids that are isolated and only stick with their own group. Luckily, the Social Studies teachers are really caring and want the students to learn. They take time out for student things that other teachers wouldn't. In order to conform with the limits of the ever- shrinking budget, the Board was forced to consider ffrom among a host of optionsj go- ing to a Eve period day, closure of certain schools, and cancellation of some athletic activities. Among the actual cutbacks enacted this year was a reduction of teachers in some departments. This led to new duties being assigned to a few teachers and created some difficulties. One important change among the many that took place on the Board was that of superintendent. Replacing Dr. Charles Ter- rell was Dt. Neal Roberts. Other major changes were caused by the recent election, in which two new Board members, Shelby Obershaw and Elisa Diaz were elected. Not many students know that they have a voice in the affairs of the School Board. The District Student Congress is an organization formed to represent the students of the district. One member of the D.S.C. sits on the Board at every meeting. We certain- ly want to thank everyone who gave us such special assistance, support, extra hands, extra hours, extra patience, throughout the year and made it possible for us to complete this book. We tried very hard to include every aspect of the school, cover as many events, games, programs, as possible, and give all the people credit who work so hard to do the many things all year long which keep the school running. We had great support from students who were willing to take a chance on this book with an unknown sponsor and a brand new staff. The community patrons came through with patronage ads and other support. In spite of all the inconveniences imposed on faculty to get students out of class for pictures, assemblies, what have you, our faculty has proven cooperative, encouraging, and understanding. We are looking forward to the Centennial year with a seasoned staff, one book under our belt, and the positive attitude from community and school. So, to all of you who have helped in all sorts of ways, we'd just like to say THANKS, we appreciate you.
