This year ' s senior class officers tried to keep this in mind when planning for senior activities. We have had some of the most outgoing seniors SBHS has ever had. Everyone wanted to get involved and that is what made the class of ' 78 great. From our winning the volleyball tournament to our participation in the hilarious grapefruit pass our class had the spirit. We had some of the best senior officers any school could ask for. A school may have the best class officers but if the class won ' t help, the officers can ' t do much. Such wasn ' t the case here. Whenever the officers planned an activity there was always a bunch of enthusiastic seniors behind them. The wo rld will never be the same because the SBHS class of 1978 is stepping out into it. Coach Corrigan came to us from Servite, an all boys ' school, to attempt to fulfill the position of head football coach. He successfully gave the students what they wanted,a wiiming football team. The team may not have gone to C.I.F., but they did experience a new sense of unity. When they lost a game, they chalked it up to experience and learned from their mistakes. When they won, they pointed out their fine points and improved upon them. Coach Corrigan taught us to congratu- late the winner and respect the loser. The Tyro annual of the year 1977-78, in exchange for his devotion to S.B.H.S. ath- letics, dedicates the entire sports section to Myles Corrigan. Clayton Williams, 33. high steps it to another Cardinal touchdown. Matt Lyons displays his defensive might by taking on two! The San Bernardino High School Football Program has arrived. During the 1977 season, many many items were accomplished and a great deal of respect was earned by Cardinal football players. The record of four wins and five losses does not reflect the amount of improvement made by our team. Two of those four losses were to Fontana 8-0, 1976 C.I.F. 4-A finalist, and Chaffey 7-3, this year ' s Co-Champion in the Citrus Belt League. Those two games prevented the Cardinals from making a post season appearance in the Open Big 5 C.I.F. Playoffs. Discipline was the main ingredient and will continue to grow and develop as the Cardinals seek higher and higher levels of success. The San Bernardino defense played well all year long. Of the nine games played, the opposition scored one touchdown or less in five of the contests. Pursuit, aggressiveness, and hard hitting were the terms that best described our Cardinal defense. Offensively, we employed a Multiple Pro I attack. The offense revolved around Peter Brown who rushed for some 790 yards and 10 touchdowns while missing the last two games of the year with a badly sprained ankle. The Special Teams were the best in the C.B.L. Time after time, the Berdoo kicking game would give the defense excellent field position or force a turnover. Combine all of these aspects with the tough discipline, growing weight program, and more concentrated coaching and the future looks to be a very bright one. Often they would push on just a little bit further even when the felt that their legs could not withstand another foot. Cross Country is a demanding sport who ' s athletes demand very little. This years team has made a tremendous improvement since their performance at the beginning of the season. We started the season with many problems ranging from a transition of coaches to certain individuals quitting who could have been a valuable asset to our program. I think that if we could have kept all the wrestlers who wrestled last year we could have taken the conference, but unfortunately these individuals weren ' t dedicated enough to pay the price. One major problem that we have had this season is that we didn ' t have any depth in our heavier weights which becomes a big problem for our Varsity and Junior Varsity squads. But fortu- nately we have a young team which shows a lot of promise in the future. Hopefully, with more recruiting and improvement on certain weight classes we could become a powerhouse in wrestling throughout Southern California. These lines that I once read could not be more appropriate to describe the 1977-78 Soccer Team. Although the number of losses was higher than the number of victories, our enthusiasm, spirit, and team work was never down. We worked hard within our limitations which, this year, were greater than ever. Most of our players were either inexperi- enced, or were playing on a team for the first time. And, of course, the competition from other teams has become greater, due to their acquisition of very experienced players. However, we may say that this year we worked with our eyes on the future. Experience was gained, and fundamental skills and team work were devel- oped. We have no doubts in our minds that the 1978 79 Soccer Team will have the capability of becoming a great team. ) 0(5.9 ULVUA [jtAAdii j Ready tor the kick off. They held a luncheon for the teachers, prior to the opening of school, they served refresh- ments for Back to School Night, and they hosted a Christmas program for the choir and band. They also arranged and served at the Awards Banquet and sup- plied refreshments for the sen- iors at graduation. In addition to all this work they also helped many seniors who need financial aid by helping them get scholar- ships. He received college degrees from Northern Michigan Uni- versity, Marquette, Michigan and Indiana University. Before coming to S.B.H.S. he taught in upper Michi- gan for about 12 years. Mr. Lund taught at S.B.H.S. for about 15 years. While he was here, he helped out as class advisor, advisor for Interact Club and was sponsor of an early morning prayer group. He taught World History and was teamed up with Ms. Ward for the great Humanities class. The underclassmen might remember him, but the students who remember him the most are the class of ' 78. That was the last year he taught full time. He started teaching in the fall of ' 76, but because of his illnesses, he could not continue. He passed away on March 28, 1977. The next week, school was half-day one day so the students could go to his funeral. This was the first time this was ever done for a teacher. Where did it go Do it this Finding graduation poems often bbriifg, I ' ve decided to dedicate a poem to the gradira class of 1978. It contains a message I would like for everyone to carry with them throughout their journey of life. THE SPECIAL YOU You make yourself just who you are, A lonely soul, a special star. Your talent is 4 ' hat you create. Once again another Tyro Annual has been printed and to us the dedicated Tyro Staff, we beheve it to be the best ever put out by SBHS ' s students. We reahze that it is not possible to please EVERY- ONE all of the time, but we did our best. A lot rested with the coorperation of the student body. Nev- ertheless we are very pleased with the majority of the yearbook. We overcame many obstacles. The first of which was the fact that there were only 10 enrolled in the class. We had only one camera and ten unexperienced photographers. But thanks to Neida Town- send and Jane Parmer from Taylor Publishing Company, we got started. Due to the lack of students, our ads suffered. However, the business classes helped out where ads were concerned. One cannot forget the Senior Color Pictures which was quite an achievement for the annual staff. This has never been done before. It is hard to comprehend how many difficulties were encountered during the process of preparing the yearbook, and to anyone who feels that they should have gotten more recognition than they did, all we say to you is GET ON THE STATE. Then you too can work after school and on weekends; to those of you who are graduating and cannot do anything about it next year, all we can say to you is. What is done is done. At any rate, we are proud of the ' 77-78 Tyro and we hope that you are too. Special thanks to Dana Vezinaw. John Owen. Greg Cole and Steve Nunez. Their help was greatly appreciated and to Miss Korziuk without whose sincere dedication, we may not have had a yearbook at all! THE ANNUAL STAFF 1977-78 m Seems like just yesterday that a new school started. Well, before you realize it, the end of it is here. Classes move on. the old ones leave, the others take over as the time goes on. As Mayor of Card City this year, I have noticed and experienced the experiences of growing up. Maturity is a process of changing and learning; within the years that I have been here the student body has changed to the better as the school itself grows older. It was great fun. Remember all the excitements we have at football games, pep assemblies and many other activities when the spirit is sky high and everyone is having a good time being themself. I hope that you will not forget those precious moments that we all share. To those who are leaving, we are entering a new world of adulthood that is right ahead. It is a world of constant struggle, and we all will change to adapt to it. Each one of us will seek a career, a lifestyle and a place in society. I hope that all the high school experiences you had will prepare you for whatever lies in your future. For those who still have the time to experience the high school life, take advantage of it. Use your time wisely and do everything at your best. Study hard, for all that you learned will pay off. Play hard, have fun, for it is the pleasure of life. They say one gets out what he puts into it. I have found this statement quite true. San Bernardino High School will always be a special place to me. I have learned so much during my time here. One of many great things about this school is its tradition, and this long preserved and proud tradition is made of numerous contributions over the years. I am proud to say that I took part in it. Thanks for all the efforts, hard-working hours and various contributions over the years by all teachers, administration, a most important, the student body. Good luck to all. I will always remember Card City. ' i m lib
