MW'-'Q uf' .A ..- 4' '.r, .-.,. , .,, Bon Voyage, Mr. Roemmich In l955 all the juke boxes were playing the nation's favorite song, Crazy Otto, and at San Bernardino High School there was a new principal named Otto, Otto Roemmich. It didn't take long for students and teachers alike to discover that Principal Otto Roemmich had some definite ideas on what a high school was supposed to do. He could have taken the path of least resistance and allowed Card City to dig its rut a little deeper, but instead he chose the more unpopular role of disrupting tradition in order to provide needed changes. He began his changes immediately with the reshuffling of administrative responsibilities. Instead of having the traditional boys' vice-principal and girls' vice-principal, he assigned all discipline and other pupil services to one vice-principal, and curriculum and guidance to another. Thus, the critical area of curriculum and guidance received systematic attention. When he discovered that many of the school clubs were violating state laws by functioning as sorority and fraternity-organizations, he gave them the choice of complying with the law or becoming disfranchised. When he saw that traditional Senior Row was a constant source of trouble, he took the necessary steps to remedy the situation. For next year, he had planned to break the traditional one-hour-a-day, five-day-a-week school schedule by experimenting with two-hour lab classes that would meet only three days a week. By doing this, he hoped to provide sufficient time to complete required classes and at the same time provide time for electives. lt is fitting in the year of the individual that we pay a special tribute to the very individualistic Mr. Otto Roemmich. And it is with regret that we bid him goodby, tor on June 30th, he leaves us to take the job of Assistant Superintendent of the Garden Grove High School District.
