For the first time at Card City, English classes had the oppor- tunity to gain these skills when a speed reading program of about sixteen hours replaced part of the regular grammar and literature curriculum, Film essays forced students to read at least 500 words per minute. Compre- hension tests required concentration. Vocabulary tests challenged even the learned, Shadowscopes, focusing attention on books from Kon-Tiki to Auntie Mame, were used for reading practice. Classic instruction of English is far from neglected at SBHS. Not only nouns, verbs, and adjectives abound in grammar lessons, but also elliptical clauses, dangling modifiers, and subordinate conjunctions. Two years of English study at Card City are required for graduation, optional Senior English is taken by over 702 of the seniors. Trying to understand a Latin tape are Harry Louder, Lani Goodwin, and Linda Meddock.
