And in that area bounded by l9th Street on the north, Campus Way on the south, E Street on the east, and G Street on the west We have a sound stage in which each Cardinal citizen had a part. lt has been the objective of the Tyro Annual to record the action, sound, and emotion of our 2200 actors. To some fell the assignment of major roles, to some fell the assignment of supporting them, and to many of us fell the task of making the mob scenes. As we attempted to meet our objective We discovered that everyone, regard- less of how insignificant he might appear, had a major role in his own little drama. You can see that to cover all of these little dramas turned out to be more of an ideal than a reality. So this is the studio, and Cardinal Productions are our stock in trade. Many different units are engaged in producing these dramas. We have stars, supporting cast, standins, direc- tors, producers, stuntmen, writers, and the proper setting for engrossing mummery. You were a part of this year's major down to this year's effort, The SBI-IS School Storyy what role did you have in it? Will you be back next year to take a more active part in the next production? Will you be satisfied with the same old story? Now let's turn the page and settle Story. Principal San Bernardino High School, or Cardinal City, operates on the principle that it is the obligation of the public schools in the United States to provide for every person the educational opportunities which enable him to assume proudly his responsibilities as an American citizen. All citizens of San Bernardino must work co- operatively, as a team, to accomplish this goal. My team position has changed over a period of years: student, teacher, counselor, and administrator at S. B. H. S. l am proud ot the teamwork and accomplishments of the citizens of Cardinal City. Let us continue to work together, to protect and preserve our American heritage. Led by Kent Scofield, Senior Class president, the seniors have come through a year of problems and new ideas successfully. Assisting Kent with his many duties was lack Meadows, Senior Class vice presi- dent. Planning such events as the Senior picnic and the Senior banquet was the job of Ierry Smith, Social Chairman. Ably fulfilling the duties of secretary- treasurer was Lois Thumma. One of the actions taken by the class was that of improving Senior Row. With funds received from the Alumni of the class of 1930, they installed a drinking fountain and made other improvements. Three years together have taught the Seniors many things. They have been guided through much by their sponsors, Mrs. Katherine Cleven, Mr. Mau- rice Brayton, and Mr. lose-ph Corrigan. As you of the class of 1956 go your separate ways we Wish you luck and success, and hope that you will find happiness and you will achieve your earnest desires. 22 , -vw W,- I W .. If FEATURED PLAYERS The supporting cast in the production of our HS. B. H. S. Tyro movie, the lunior Class, strived to make the school year l955-56 the best. The major roles were given to lohn Bramlett, lunior Class President, lean Savage, Vice-President: ludy Robertson, Secretary-Treasurer, and ludy Larf sen, Social Chairman. The roles were made difficult at times by the planning of the Iunior-Senior Prom. but problems were made to be solved. The lunior Class Production was under the faculty direction of Miss Emma Gilmetti, Miss lanice Seward, and Mr. Phillip Suchow. These teachers called and attended all the class meetings and helped the lunior Production Numbers along. One of the biggest numbers in the lunior Class Epic was the Iunior-Senior Prom with the striking theme, Oriental Fantasy. Iudy Larsen took the spotlight by suggesting this theme. She won two free tickets to the Prom. The funds for the Prom came from the basketball concession profits and money saved from the previous year's Hawaiian Dance. The luniors had all the planning and re- hearsals as their job and they were the producers of the entire act. The successful Prom was presented May 19, l956, at the Orange Show Cafeteria, with Alvino Rey's orchestra providing the music. The wardrobe department produced the Iunior Class sweaters, which were charcoal gray with red trim around the waistband, cuffs, and neck. ln this production number the spotlight was put on lim Hill, winner of the emblem contest. He was awarded a free sweater for his effort. The design is made up of three playing cards, with the middle being a Cardinal Ioker and overlapping the other two cards. The card on the left side has a five on it and the card on the right side has a seven, representing the year 1957. Another part of the wardrobe department in- cluded the Senior Class rings for next year. The rings were ordered during the second semester for the luniors. This year a new ruby stone was intro- duced, and it is much more vivid in color than the previous year's stones. The name of the new ruby is the Fire Ray Ruby. Besides the rings, there are Senior Class pins and necklaces. The lunior Class directed the concession counters during the basketball season and produced and directed dances after the basketball games. The dances proved to be lots of fun for those of the cast at S. B. H. S. who attended. The concession profits helped to produce the prom as was mentioned above. ln closing the lunior Class story we should say it had a busy and very successful year. They strived to make it the best year and did a very good job. Supportmg vcr 3-if Miss Seward. Mr. Suchow and Miss Gilmetti, sponsors of the Junior class, have done a tremendous iob in leading the class ot 1957 to a successiul conclusion. -4 r . . , ,Y Wg x , l A . S. coaching squad. led the varsity football squad to a triumphant season. The Cardinal City Squad Before the Cameras Like the Phoenix bird of old, SBHS' gridders rose out of the ashes of last season's defeat to place fourth in the Citrus Belt League. lohn Earp, the latest model, shiny new coach, was assisted by Dick Adair in the backfield, Ed Wheeler, on the line, and lim Hackelman at end. The most exciting game of the 1955 football season was the one in which SBHS battled Pacific to a 39 to U victory. The win was impressive in many ways, but most of all because it was a team victory. The whole bench was cleared before the final gun, providing every man an opportunity to play in this triumphant game. loe Womack's long, touchdown runs of 98 and 83 yards would not have been possible without the help of such lineman as Bob Patterson, Don Learned, Dale Torrence, Don Boyce, lim Nishkian, George Perkins and Bill Giles. The 14 points that Womack scored gave loe a season's total of 54 which tied him with Biverside's Ernie Ford for the 1955 Citrus Belt Scoring Title. Besides the 14 points made by Womack, Dave Shank, Iohn Parrott, Larry Mercadante and lohn Kusske were able to carry the ball over the goal line during the course of the game. The Cardinals were triumphant in their initial contest with Leuzinger, sweeping past the invaders with an impressive score of 25 to 5. Amazingly enough, the Pacific game and this one were the only two games in which the entire squad was able to play. ln spite of the overall improvement, the Cards permitted Redlands High Schol to proudly carry home the chrome plated smudge pot after their 20 to O victory. San Bernardino's squad fumbled frequently in their game against Antelope Valley. The Cardinals fumbled three times inside the 15-yard line. loe Womack fumbled a few times in the game, he was bottled up by Antelope Valley but managed to score the lone Cardinal touchdown. Artie Keough and Company from Pomona whose tune was Stop Womack, which they did success- fully, wound up on the long end of a 21 to 6 win. lohn Parrott tallied the lone touchdown in the game for the Cardinals. The Cardinals won one of their oldest CBL rivalry games with Colton, by outplaying the Yellow lackets and scoring a 14 to O victory. loe Womack scored on a one-yard plunge and a 55-yard pass play from Boger Wetland. Ben Bodriquez, lim Nishkian, Bob Patterson, lohn Kusske, Al Long, Leonard Fields, Larry Mercadante, Ernest Lockert and Dave Shank were among the heroes. In a ball game that could have gone either way in the first half, broke loose in the second half and went with the host team, as the Poly Bears cake- walked to a second-half victory, 26 to 6, over a first-half, defensively rough Cardinal squad. Playing their former teammate, the Fontana Steelers lost a grudge game against San Bernar- dino High School, 14 to 6. Ioe Womack, a transfer student from Fontana, had been hung in effigy prior to the game. A battling Cardinal squad, which would not say die until the final gun, battled violently with Chaffey before falling to them 32 to 20. loe Womack scored three touchdowns and one conversion. TOP ROW From the Glympian heights of CBL victory to the Stygiari depths of last place was the fate of our lovable Cardinal Bees this year. The loss of key players, irieligibihty of those re maining, and a new coach combined to make me season for our little ones, a tough one. lohn Goddard and Gil Requejo scored touclz- downs in their first league game against Pomona but the Red Devils still held them off 21 to l3. Six Colton interceptions and three Cardette pas: interceptions were enough to nullity any score org either side, giving SERS one of two ties. Paul Gutierrez, lerry Whitfield, lim Clark, Ralpli Montecino, Larry Mc Graw, and Ron Skipper played a stalwart, uphill game, but their third game of the season still left them on the snort end of an 18 to 6 score against Riverside. The game, played at Stockf ton Field, was viewed by a small but enthusiastic crowd. lf it hadnt been for ferry Wl'iitfield's last minute touchdown, the baby Cards would have again been blanked out in their tiff with the Fontana Steelers, Reauejo, Goddard, and Chuck Mathews played a dogged game to hold the score down to i9 to 7. Three times the Cardettes drove inside the Chai' fey 20, but three times they were repulsed to end up with a O to O score. Don Sampson, defensive left end, got credit for a safety by tackling Dodge of Redlands in the end zoneg result: the Cards lost l4 to 2. Against archfrival, Pacific, the Cardettes lost l2 to U. Many spectators remembered that the pref ous year's team had beaten the Pirates, 47 to 7. The seasons performance proved one riiirgg the Cardettes of '56 will be able to do nothing but improve. Point to Victorious Future With a new gymnasium and a well rounded basket- ball club, the SBHS Cardinal Varsity swept to its best season with Coach Dick Adair guiding the quintet. The Cardinals tied for second place in the Citrus Belt League with Chaffey High School. The Redbirds lost a playoff game and a chance in the CIF State High School Basket- ball Touranment by losing to Chaffey 43 to 38 at neutral Riverside. The two biggest wins of the season were over our cross- town rival Pacific 49 to 37 at their gym and 63 to 46 at our gym. Chuck De Lao was outstanding and high point man, scoring l4 points in each game. Dave Mielke scored 14 points in the first Pirate game and Dale Conway scored 14 points in the second contest against Pacific. The most heartbreaking game of the season was against Riverside in the Chino Tournament. The Cardinals led 37 to 36 with two seconds to play. A jump ball was called in the SBHS back court. Tom Chatham, Riverside's star forward, got the tip in and let go with a jump shot that went through the basket before the buzzer went off to end the game. Riverside won 38 to 37. The best and most spectacular win was against Red- lands at the University of Riverside gym. The Cardinals were up and ready for an upset of the top seeded Terriers. The Cards jumped to a l4 to 4 first quarter lead, at half- time the Redbirds led 25 to 16, at the end of the third quarter the Cards still led, but by only 4 points. The game ended with SBHS ahead by 2 points with a 49 to 47 victory over Redlands. The Varsity, as a whole, was the most well rounded team ever. No one player stood out above the other, they were strictly a team, a reason for the fine season. All 15 members of the Card squad Worked hard and should be complimented. For Coach Adair this was his finest season and best squad. At the Cardinal Pep Club Banquet, these players re- ceived awards: Dale Conway won the Citizens National Bank Sportsmanship Trophy, the most voluable player award, radio station KFXM's most improved player, and the Pep Club's most valuable player award. Chuck De Lao won Marley Sporting Goods' Outstanding Defensive Player award. Bill Munson was awarded the Pep Club's team captain award. Dale Hull won the heigho free throw award in CBL by hitting 40 points out of 57 attempts for a 677 percentage. One of the Cards' victories in our gym was the largest score ever recorded by a SBHS Varsity Basketball Team. The Varsity posted a 93 point win over Fullerton in 32 minutes of playing time. The score was 93 to 63, a total of 156 points was scored. Dave Mielke, the brilliant junior on the squad, scored 32 points in the game, tieing the record of 32 set by Harry Wilson in 1945. With the material coming up from junior Varsity and Bees, Cards are hoping to see Coach Adair and his team on top of the pedestal next season. ,444 Iunior Howard, Homer Wilhite, Dick Trolinger, Bill Musso, Iohn Quinneit, Iohn Aleksich. Baseball Story The Cardinal horsehiders under the guid- ance of Coach Kenny johnson, as this story went to press, appeared to be off toward another great season and looked impressive enough to nail down a top spot in the first division in Citrus Belt League play. The Cardinals were playing .688 percent ball for the season, having won ll and lost 5. ln league play the Cards have won 4 and lost 3 for a .571 percentage. Starting with the pitchers, the Cardinals' top hurler and All-CBL player last year was big jim Turner. lim looked like a good bet to gain All-CBL again this year. jim was a senior, batted right, and threw right. The Cards' second big hurler was lim Potter. lim was a senior and also batted right and threw right. The third Card chucker was Ron Kahler, a right handed pitcher. Ron was a junior and will be a great help to Coach johnson next year. The two re- lief pitchers were Bob Winter, a left-handed senior who saw much action with the l.V.'s last year. The other pitcher was Larry Kitchen, a right-handed junior who will be second line pitcher behind Bon Kahler next year. Behind Coach Kenny Iohnson returned this year to lead the Varsity Baseball squad through a successful season. the plate the Cards had two fine senior catchers in Gene Schafl, who broke his wrist before the Pacific game last season, and Dick Iollitf, who led the CBL in batting for half the season last year. Coach johnson brough up a sophomore catcher from the junior Varsity after the Easter vacation. Fred Chipman will be a valuable iron man for the Cardinals in the next two years behind the plate. john Green, left-handed first baseman, is the only one on the Card varsity. john is a junior and will be back next year to haunt opposing pitchers. At second base is joe Gomez, a hard hitting junior. Other second basemen included Ray McCoy, Gordon Daniels, and Don Frame. At shortstop is All-CBL junior Carl Camp. Back- ing up Carl were Hubert Daniels and Ted Carpenter. Starting the season at third base was Roger Weiland, who broke his finger during Easter vacation. This gave john Bram- let and Bob MacGregor a chance to land this position. ln left-field was Max Alonzo. ln center field was versatile Larry Mercandante. Right- field position was held down by Dick Poole. lack Tucker was the second man used for all three outfield positions. Ed Wheeler coached the Iunior Varsity Baseball squad in the 1956 season. helping each team member to make the varsity team of the luture. Thinclads Show Coaches Rudy Lanto, Ralph Simpson, and Ted Murgia are extremely proud ot how well the Cardinal thin-clads have done this year. The Card City Cross Country men, paced by Iohn Kean, captain of the squad, Bill Robinson, joe Aleman, Hay- wood Owens, Paul Hauser and others, placed fourth in the all C. B. Coach Angelo's crew worked hard in hope of beating the incumbent C. B. L. champs, Chatley. The Cardinal Varsity and lunior Varsity net men had identical records for the season of 5 wins and 4 loses. ln league play both Varsity and Iunior Varsity had 1 win and l loss. ln the second Citrus Belt League match against Chattey the Cardinals were downed by an overwhelming margin ot 9 to O in both Varsity and Iunior Varsity. The Cardinals still had a chance to win the Citrus Belt League it someone would up- set Chattey. The Cardinals had two pairs of doubles teams in Varsity divi- sion who looked like they would be nominated to the all C. B. L. tournament. They were Don Leary and Lyle Keptord at first doubles and unbeatable Bob Bristow and Don Anderson at second doubles. Coach Angelo expressed the hope that both doubles teams would be nom- inated to the all CBL tourna- ment.
