Subjects relating to Social Sudies have a great deal to do with preparing us for life in our community, in our state, and in our country. The teachers who teach these subjects certainly do their job well in preparing the students of today to be good citizens tomorrow. To understand the better things in life or to know how to apply oneself to creative living one would want to take some courses in Applied Arts. These teachers know their jobs well. And they give many extra hours in making the courses interest- ing and enjoyable. Credit is certainly given to these hard-working teachers for their well-done job. 'A t Norman Gaurke. Counselors helped each student select his courses and gave advice when it was needed. The secretaries assisted these people in whatever way possible. To keep our school neat and clean was the job of the custodians, who certainly deserve our praise. Adding also to the efficient system were the cooks and our school nurse. AT THEIR FINGERTIPS To describe our band We could use many different words and still never find a Way to say how Wonderful they are. Nothing takes more work, more inspiration or more devotion than the building of a band. Nothing can be more discouraging or satisfying. Qur San Bernardino l-ligh School Band under the direction of Mr. U'Ren has appeared in many fine performances this year. Who can ever forget the Way the band played at our football games, and those Wonder- ful concerts they gave? During the different seasons ot the year, our Flag Majorettes, Cheer- leaders, and Pom-Pon girls are kept busy learning new routines, steps, and cheers. Our games Wouldn't he complete Without these girls. Our Cheerleaders this year were sponsored by Miss Katherine Liv- ingston. Their energy and enthusiasm led the Cardinals to Victory. Miss Ellen Crumhaker acted as sponsor for the rhythmic Pom-Pon girls. Twirling their Pom-Pons, they inspired school spirit through the seasons. Sponsored by Mr. U'Ren are the pretty Flag Majorettes. With their unique routine, they pertorrn at football games and pep rallies. KEEN ROUTINES L. to R.: Hall, Pat: Von Osdel, Donna: Willyurd. Bobbie: Stcpp, Nancy: Bryant, Pat: Goii. 'WE WAY TO FAI 12 P LAY, s mms the September 24th game with lohn Muir of Pasadena saved the Cards from a shutout. The 25-7 loss displayed little of the single-wing power, but did reveal alert defensive plays on the part of Bob Lewis and fohn Broliolni, coached by defensive coach Rudy Lanto. A lot of greenness showed up in the Muir game that we didn't know was there, was the way Coach Huffaclcer diagnosed the teams performance. To alter the situation, he reshuffled the line on offense. The performance against San Diego's tough Herbert Hoover was an oute standing defensive duel until the southern Cardinals broke loose with two touchdowns in the last two minutes of play. lvan Learned's DOWN, S.B.H.S. fine kicking kept the San Diego tearn deep in their own territory until the final quarter. Four- teen points in the last two minutes, coupled with a second quarter rally made it 20-6 in favor of Hoover. Even though the Cards had been defeated twice, at the time of the Colton game in Ccto- ber, they had played good defensive games. Soon, we were sure to find the winning way. With the finishing score of 20-l3, in Colton's favor, we found out this wasn't the way to victory. The entire line showed improvement, but with the losing of this game, S.B.H.S. suff fered its first C.B.L. loss. Varsity football players display top- notch action in an exciting game be- tween Colton and S.B.H.S. X,Q fi Top Picture-Coach Gath Huffaker ran into tough luck this season. He had a good team but all the breaks went to the wrong team. Bottom Pictures-Assistant coaches Dick Adair and Rudy Lanto helped bring the team around into shape. COACH AND CAPTAIN Cur second CBL. loss occurred on Qctober l4, 1.-.':.en the B1verside Bears toppled tie varsity squad by puszuinig t:.e scare to 35 - 2. The Fontana game Cot. 28, showed need for 1IY,fYf,V9 merit' -and also, tinie for a victory. Merv Loverxburg refayxered f: fixiipble and f'fIYI16Ci the flQSlC1lf over the line for our only tcucqdown. To iTOTllCII1T1fS l9, San Bernardinos goints didrrt lock too promising. Undaunted, the Cards traveled to Bedlands to r.l':y on the Universitys field. Victory was in the air as we brouglit home the chrome plated smudge pot by defeating the Ter- riers by a score of l3-7. This was the way we were waiting for the winning way. With the hopes of a second straight victory, S.B.lal.S. :net Cliaffey on their own field. With the help of Merv Lovenburg, lim loliff and Steve Menkel carried the ball over for 13 points, but next to the Tigers score of 24, our l3 points weren't enough. Following the defeat by the Tigers, the cards showed their fighting spirits by trouncing the Pomona Devils by the sur- prising score of 27-l3. By beating the Devils for the C.B.L. championship. We owe this victory to the terrific blocking and tackling of Crazylegs Bodigus and the fine running of Learned and Lovenburg. The week before the Pacific game students from both schools displayed a great amount of rivalry and enthusiasm. Card Citizens did everything from holding numerous pep assemblies to building a boat with Pirates at the helm. Win- ning only two games before the Pacific clash, the Bedbird team was sure of a win, but all of our hopes and prayers were smashed, when, in the last quarter, Pacific broke the tie, mak- ing the score 12-6. A total of two wins and five losses put us at the bottom of the Citrus Belt standing. With a new year and a new coach, maybe the long defeated Bedbird team will show S.B.H.S. a winning way in 55. Ivan Learned. S. B. H. S.'s hard-driving fullback. made all opposing linemen lear- ful. Ivan was named on the C.B.L. all-star ieam. Dlck Guzman helped round out the Cardinal backiield. lim Iollil, the Redbirds' glue-fingered end, received honorable mention on the C.B.L. team.
