By putting child weltare tirst in every issue which has arisen during his administration, Mr. Parlc has im- proved our school system and created a better school environment tor all the pupils ot San Bernardino. With unseltish devotion to students and teachers alilce, Mr. Park guides more than l6,000 students in their worlc. Though his duties make him one ot the busiest men in San Bernardino, he is never too busy to listen to an- other's troubles. And while he may not agree, he can always see the other person's view. A graduate ot San Bernardino High School himselt, he has shown an interest in high school activities which has made him our adviser and triend. and to our former student body president . . . ralph contreras For his contributions to San Bernardino High School. As our A.S.B. president in lf?-47, Raphael Contreras captured the loyalty ot the entire student body and aroused a strong interest in student activities. He origin- ated the plan tor Cardinal City, which was put into ettect as our torm ot student government this year. When he graduated, he lett us many tangible things, such as his paintings and our Johnny Cardinal Mascot costume. However, the intangibles which he gave to S.B.H.S.-his triendly spirit, his tolerance ot others, his sense ot humor, and his ability to get along with every- one-are more valuable. As a student he inspired us to do better things tor S.B.H.S. . p -if Q4 mi 4' Wfp ,c in memory of Richard and Anne RICHARD SMITH 4 ANN E KRAUSE God be with them 'til we meet again BECAUSE OF tragic accidents which claimed their lives, Richard and Anne will not be with our class when we graduate in June. Though absent in the flesh, our two friends will be with us in spirit, however, as we march up to get our diplomas. f -' -..mgqfsL--f' 'I r . X. Jack Clark, winner of Citizens National Bank r O U Q h e m Ll p sportsmanship trophy, was called most improved player of l948. In a preseason game the Redbirds came up against l-lerbert l-loover ot San Diego. Car- dinals met Cardinals on the gridiron with the San Diego powerhouse talcing a wide lead. .. At Las Vegas, one ot the first games played, we showed a need lor more practice and a need tor teamwork. The tans who trelclced so lar away from home were not disappointed that they had gone to Vegas. They saw the malcings ot a good team in Paul Taylor's boys. Fifteen tirst downs to l? tor Vegas showed the determination ot the Cards, but they just couldn't get the scores. 84 TOP: Gordon Hart drives around San Diego's left end. BOTTOM: Determined Cards swarm over Vegas fullbaclc Colton led the game at haltetime, 6-O. Wlwerw the team came out ot the dressing rooms to begin the second halt, the rooters knew that Coach Taylor had per- tormed a miracle. Sheehan started the halt-time rally by recovering a kickfott in the Colton end fone. Trask, later in the game, tossed two TD. passes to Forbes, with another touch-tally being put on the scoreboard tor good measure. . . San Bernardino took the lead ot the League in their smashing victory over Redlands, who the week betore had beat- en the Pomona Rad Devils. The game was ours tor the whole oO minutes, but we were unable to score any points until the last tew seconds ot play, when Searcy re- turned the ball and Trask ran it over to win the game, with the help ot Diaf, Por- ter, and t-lelstrom on the line. trea BOTTOM: Red-hot Poly Bears, led by Jenkins, Ellison, and Streeter, swamped Redbirds on the land and in the air. TOP: Second half explosion led when Sheehan fell on the ball in the Colton end zone for the first 6 points. BOTTOM: All-C.B.L. Lowell Trask sparked Redbirds in thrilling last- second victory in Redlands game. T e m ' t o u h ' o TOP: Long runs by Clark, Corny, and Miles failed to top Chaffey's Our close game with Chattey was a mat- ter ot trading T.D.'s, with San Bernardino losing out by only one point. Never will the runs the game inspired be forgotten. Cornelison ran 67 yards to score, while Jack Clark, intercepting a lateral, ran 60 yards tor another score .... San Bernardino ventured the Riverside game with the team reduced through in- juries. The team showed tight in the open- ing moments ot play, but as the game went on, the team members began to show exhaustion. A passing and running ottensive by Riverside racked up points tor the Poly Bears. The Cards gave the Pomona eleven a good tight, but the Red Devils had a time team, and they won the game tair and square. The tight and the nearness ot the game is not told through the mere score ot Q0 to O. ln the words ot Coach Taylorm'lQur line improved with each game we played, and the Pomona game was a credit to the hard-working kids. Hiram Dia? clinched All-C.B.L. in the Pom- ona contest and impressed Pomona by his aggressive line backing.. Pomona was by tar the loest team in the Citrus Belt League. 86 Corny and Clark failed to block last quarter Pomona tally as Pomona clinched the C.B.L. Crown. By returning the lciclc-ott in the opening min- utes ot the second halt, the Cards swept over Sea l-lawlc territory tor their lone score. The speed in the Redondo baclctield was too much tor the locals in their tirst game ot the season. All CTE. sprinter l-toward Bugbee strealced past our baclis three times betore they had their helmets on. The rest ot the game was spent trying to recover the advantage gained in the tirst tew min- utes. Defvlarco was injured in the Redondo game, a handicap which withheld his pitchf ing arm trom turther play during the season. BOTTOM: Junior backs MILES and EVANS starred for underclass- men but tailed to cope with Seniors' 38 points. EASTER, HAYDEN, and All-League HIRAM DIAZ brought down on of Redondo's pile-driving backs, after a three-yard gain. a S 9 S U . TOP: MILES stopped TRASK on one of the long yardage gaining runs. The eagerly anticipated Junior-Senior game came as a pertect climax to our tootball season. The Junior baclcs-Evans, Miles, and Negrete-played bang-up tootball, but ex- perience andthe superior line ot the seniors let the Juniors out on the small end ot a 38 to O score. For the seniors, Lowell Traslc and Bob Cornelison tossed deadly touch- down passes and outran the Juniors on pow- er thrusts, most ot which went tor great yardage. CTE. rules malce it necessary to play the Junior-Senior game during the regular sea- son, this year being the tirst time the game hasn't been played in the spring. The ad' vantage ot playing the game while the play- ers are still tresh goes to the Seniors, who should be victorious every year.
