One of those ideas is in evidence here in this book, the color photo on the frontice page. Our theme Unity Brings Vic- tory is an outgrowth of the present world struggle. Unity is an important factor in today ' s problem and unity will determine i t s outcome. As in war, so in a staff, unity is import- ant, and only with it — is victory won. We present our second war book. DEDICATION Carrie Coddington To one of the most dearly loved of all teachers, we dedicate this TYRO of 1945. Miss Carrie Coddington, upon advice of her physician, retired unexpectedly this fall after thirty-nine years of service to her beloved alma mater. Her keen interest in all school activities, especially in the TYRO, has endeared her to all students throughout the years. It was through her efforts that the first year book was started. She will long be remembered for her kindly help to all students and for her words of encouragement and her cheery smile. We wish Miss Coddington improved health so that she will have time for the leisure and the enjoyment that she so richly deserves. ■• VV Sv. I ' il - J i ;.  ■ ' . An unex- pected incident happened during my term as secretary; the vice president of our senior class was drafted. This left yours truly holding two offices. At a later date Bill, our president said, Good luck, Hal, I am going to Los Angeles to attend a preparation school. Utterly amazed, I found myself thinking of duties of all three offices. I did not know what to do. Finally thought of a way out of this complication; that was to substitute officers. [y I thou Seriously though, I think our prime accomplishment should be a further devel- opment of SENIOR ROW. We should make this development to the extent that the spirit of 45 will be kept alive. To the Class of 46 : We, as a class, entered good old S.B.H.S. in Feb. 1943. This day will linger in our memories forever. I can truthfully say that we have had more fun at S.B.H.S. than in any other year. Many of the members of the Jr. Class are interested in sports and clubs. Many of us who are out for track are very much indebted to Coach Hodge for the way he worked with us. ' . I want to thank the members of the Jr. class for the cooperation and help you have so readily given me. I know the school will see even bigger and better things of us next year. Among them was the amendment which increased the Senate by 3 members, 2 representatives of the Mexican-American stu- dents of our High School and 1 representative of the Negro students of our High School, and several measures limiting the wearing of slacks. They also made provisions for music in the cafeteria and the setting up of an Inter- Club-Council. 1 Sincerely, Arlo Rohrer, B. Valles, N. Gonzales. H. Gardner, B. Smith, M. 62 A. S. B. The Associated Student Body entered into the second semester in fine style. Spirited basketball games-, a variety of fine assemblies, and the launching of the high school recreation center, The Gangplank , were a few of the many recreational activities. The student body, with the senate leading the way, organized and carried out a suc- cessful clean up campaign. Under service to our country, the students contributed freely to the Red Cross, and par- ticipated in the Sixth War Loan. The success of the activities of the A.S.B. in the second semester could not have been achieved without the fine spirit of cooperation maintained between the students and faculty. You have helped us make a difficult job much easier and also to make our Girls ' League one of the best and most active leagues. All the things we have been able to accomplish this year have been due largely to your cooperation. It has really been grand working with each and everyone of you. Thank you. 4v , Vo - Sincerely, Dorothy Widmeyer, H, J V; Bartlett, D. Rayfield, D. Noriega, E. 64 L A G U E We are very proud of our Girls ' League this year. It has provided many entertaining and educational pro- grams for the girls. The purpose of the Girls ' League is: 1. To stand for ideals of true womanhood, courage, sim- plicity, loyalty, and honor. 2. To promote the spirit of good fellowship and democracy in the school. Since the war many new students have enrolled, therefor the Girls ' League aims for 1944-45 have been: 1. To make all new students in S.B.H.S. feel at home, and to help them find friends. 2. To have every girl participating in some or- ganization for young people in the church, school, or community. But between the conception of the yearbook ' s theme and this glorifying day, lie many long hours of previous work. During this period much is underway, the click of the camera, grind- ing of the pencil sharpener, crackling of paper, slicing of the paper cutter, and the tapping of the typewriter, and always looking forward towards the day of publication. And then June — the Tyro complete — it ' s a wonderful feel- ing, and it is only with the aid of our competent and efficient advisor. Miss Ella Connor, that we have achieved our goal. She has paved the way and taken us over the rough spots. It ' s a wonderful book! Vilma Pia Editor-in-Chief Sincerely, Vilma 80 ANNUAL Last fall was the beginning of a discouraging year. Because of the war, it was evident that a year book was the impossible. But with a struggle, a determined effort, and the cooperation of the student body, and our most able financial advisor, Mr. Hall, we have brought forth this 1495 Tyro. We appreciate the student body ' s prompt payments and eager enthusiasm. We have faithiuUy covered all patriotic drives held at S.B.H.S. and backed and publicized all dances, games, and other campus activities. Our feature pages have reflected the foibles and amusing incidents without which high school life would not be complete. Through our servicemen ' s column we have brought th ewar closer to our school, and we were very pleased to receive the many letters from our alumni with Uncle Sam, expressing their en- joyment in receiving the Tyro Weekly, a link with old S.B.H.S, Sincerely, Diana Griffin Brown, N. We re- ceive enough money from subscriptions and sales, and advertising to carry on without any outside help. One morning this year I received the news that the store room in which the paper is stored was flooded, but enough paper v as salvaged to carry on for the remaining part o the year without having to buy more. Shepherd and town scenes led to the manger which was the outstanding feature. Here the birth of Christ was beautifully presented. In this year of war we were particularly grateful to have this presentation. SPANISH AMERICAN ASSEMBLY On February 15, the Spanish Americans presented a musical assembly to the student body. The program began with a dance, the rhumba. Singing, guitar playing and dancing was presented by the S.B.H.S. students; and group singing accompanied by guitars was presented by some of the students from Alessandro. This assembly was one of the best this year and all are looking forward to more of this kind. 91 Left to right: Lubbring, M., Wissburg, L., Becker, M., Weathers P., Camp, J., Shafor, B. It was the first league game of the season and marked the return of Chaffey to the C.B.L. Chaffey s lirst touchdown came midway in the first quarter. In the third quarter the Cards gained pos- session of the ball on the 50 yard line and through a series of runs marched down to the Tiger 28. From there Jack Henley passed to Hallmark on the two yard line and ran the ball over from there, v ith a score 6-6. Later Chaffey scored again. In the fourth quarter the Tigers recovered a Cardinal fumble and drove to the Cardinal 10 yard line, but Kay ran through and blocked the kick and the ball rolled into the end zone, giving San Bernar- dino a safety. The game ended 19-8 in favor of Chaffey. Brown Gallanes The Riverside Bears gave indication that they were out to hold their C.B.L. championship when they de- feated the San Bernardino Cardinals 25-0 before a large crowd on Stockton Field. Then in the third quarter Rainbolt repeated his performance of the second quarter. Coach Simpson shifted Rohrer and Brown to the backfield which gave more speed. On Thanksgiving day at Pomona the Cardinals lost their third league game by a score of 20-7 in favor of Pomona. The Cardinals threatened all the time, but the exceptionally good blocking on the part of Pomona gave Pomona their gains. Henley intercepted a Pomona pass; on the following play by faking a right run, Henley passed to Hallmark who ran the rest of the way for the touchdown. San Bernardino won their second league game by defeating Colton 13-6, Brown and Rohrer clicking off most of the yards by runs. Brown was stopped on about the 1 yard line as the gun went off ending the half. San Bernardino, using a reverse a few times, gained quite a few yards. To start off the season we played Hemet, Victorville, and Barstow, winning all by a fairly good margin. By winning all our practice games we, with swelled heads, journeyed to Colton and lost 18-13. However, we determined never to lose again. The Cardinals defeated Colton 39-25 in the second round play. First row, lefij o right: Moore, T., Weathers, J., ftCa[l. Defeating Pomona the first time, we were unaware of a better team so that the next time we played them, they beat us by 2 points, 25-23. San Bernardino was the underdog in the Riverside game by holding the small end of the score, but this was the best played game of any of them and with more time the Cardinal 5 might have won. Chaffey put up a stiff fight, but the Cardinal five proved too much for them beating them 31-19 and 33-26. Redlands put up the least resistance of any team, but the Cardinal cagers shot ahead i nthe first quarter 5-1 and the game ended 42-20 in favor of the Cardinals. SOPHOMORE In the first game for the Cardettes the team defeated Victorville High School 19-0. Don Smith scored the first touchdown by a pass from Henley and the second touch- down resulting from a quarterback sneak also made by Smith. Henley scored in the last quarter to put the Card- ettes down as winners by a 19-0 score. Anderson kicked one of the extra points. The Cardettes played the Perris Varsity string which not only outplayed the Cardettes but also out-weighed the Cardettes. Visbal played a very good game. In the second quarter San Bernardino recovered a Perris fumble behind the Perris goal line giving San Bernardino their only two points. Perris won 20-2. The Cardettes ' first league game with Chaffey went over with a bang-up score of 12-0. The first half ended scoreless, but m the second half the Cardettes poured on the heat to score two touchdowns in the third and fourth quarters. In the third quarter Sam Henley passed to Anderson and Anderson scored, while in the fourth quarter, Joe Rodriquez intercepted a Chaffey pass and ran through the entire opponent team for 63 yards to score. Riverside kept sending in reserves and the San Bernardino sophomores could not match their opponents and therefor wore down the Cardettes to make it possible for both Riverside scores. The Cardettes defeated Colton Union High School by a score of 18-0. Rodriguez, Wentworth, Manor, scored the three touchdowns for San Bernardino. The San Bernardino Cardettes won over the Red- lands Sophs, 18-0. Visbal accounted for two of the touch- downs. On one he intercepted a Redlands pass running 40 yards for the score and Rodriguez scored the last touchdown by using a guarterback sneak on the four yard line. The Cardettes lost to the strong Pomona team by 18-0, putting the sophs into fourth place also. Coach Ralph Simpson took over the job as coach for the sopho- mores, with the largest number of lettermen the sophomores have had in years. The team journeyed up to Victorville and Barstow with the varsity string and also beat their practice games. The Cardettes were the underdogs in both of the Riverside games, losing the first time 24-14 and 20-14 the second game. Also like the varsity these games, even though we lost, turned out to be the best played games of the Chaffey did not have a sophomore basketball squad. But this bye did not help us win our game with Pomona and we lost by a few points. COMMENCEMENT OF ' 44 Farewell, S.B.H.S., farewell to all the fun we ' ve had together. As we leave our Alma Mater behind and step out in this world of turmoil to make a place for ourselves, memories of you will forever live in our hearts. As the students of each graduating class step onto the stage and receive their diplomas, such thoughts probably are utmost in their minds. Those sitting in the audience watching them, are thinking, We shall miss you, graduating seniors — for our school activities will no longer be shared by you. So long, not goodbye. Good luck! and may you find the road to success an easy one to walk. Graduating Class. 117 Left to right: Rohrer, B., Grieving, J., Holmes. W., Haggard. L.. Caldwell. It ' s a great opportunity, and ose who made it possible for me to gain this thank Miss Ella Connor, our advisor as well as assisted us in overcoming all difficulties; Mr. Paul, „ _ understanding printer; Mr. and Mrs. Stark who did splendid j ork in printing senior pictures; the faculty, students, the administra- tion, and our staff — the most efficient and the swellest bunch of students any- one could ever work with, always contributing their every last bit of effort. One ' s senior year in high school is commonly referred to as a year full of gai ety and crammed with happy memories. June has a sacred meaning especially to seniors — it means graduation which is something everyone has looked forward to since childhood days. The preparation and completion of one ' s senior year and graduation is not complete without something to recall the many happenings of preceding years. In this TYRO we have recorded the past year ' s events, assuming that in future years the 1945 TYRO will long be remembered as the best! We hope that it will prove itself sufficient in revealing the memories you may have forgotten, so that once again you may experience additional joy from them. In choosing this year ' s theme our selection is, UNITY BRINGS VICTORY. Only with unity and cooperation can a staff be successful! so a nation, with its men on the battle fields of war must have unity. If every individual were more unitable and cooperative, people as well as nations would overcome their arising difficulties. In our present day life many problems are being formed and solved, and when this struggle is over let us hope that we con still say, ' - ' UNITED we stand. Sincerely, VILMA PIA Editor-in-Chief V % r K - y :J v J y i ' ' I i •V - o
