FOOTBALL TEAM BREAKS JINKS Guided by the brilliant strategy and untiring ettorts ot Coach Ralph Simpson, the hard-hitting Cardinals finished one of S.B.H.S.'s best football seasons in eight- een years, The Redbirds just missed the long-sought CBL. title, losing only to the champion Riverside Polybears, but fought through an otherwise victorious season to bring S.B.H.S. a Citrus Belt League second place. Using a man-in-motion system instead of the straight power employed by Red- bird grid machines of the past, Coach Simpsons gridders rolled up more touch- downs against their opponents than any San Bernardino team in a decade, and packed more deception and speed than S.B.H.S, fans had seen in many years. The Cards started the season with a B-U win over a surprisingly strong Hemet High School eleven on Stockton Field. Traveling to Burbank in their second en- counter, they edged out a 7-O win over the highly rated Coast League Burbank lvlaroons, scoring on a line buck by ace fullback, Leonard l-louser, alter he and Art Romo had marched the ball downtield from their own 30 on a series of smashing line bucks. Playing their first C,B.L. game under the lights ot Stockton Field, the Cards trimmed their traditional rivals, Redlands' Terriers by a 23-6 score, breaking pay dirt on two downtield marches on line smashes and end runs and the third time on a pass interception and 73 yard run-back by Leonard Houser. FOOTBALL TEAM BREAKS JINKS ln their second encounter with the Terriers the following Friday, the Redbirds bettered their previous score, winning 26-U, scoring on three touchdown passes and an end sweep by Leo Visbal, and completely baffling Redlands by the de- ceptiveness of the man-in-motion and flanker right. The Redbirds swept to ct 28-7 victory over an exceptionally weak Yellow- jacket squad, but suffered injuries which probably weakened their chances for a C. B. L. crown this year. Backs Leo Visbal and Leonard I-louser and center Alan O'l-lara were put out of commission for the Riverside game the following Friday night, and their loss, the fog, and a slippery ball contributed to the fighting Card- inals' 24-l9 loss to Riverside's lim Iordon and Co. Playing their best game of the season, the breaks of the game went against the Cards in the last quarter when Iordon, fleet Bear back, took a long pass for the winning touchdown and the championship. Playing the annual Thanksgiving Day classic with Pomona's Red Devils on Stockton Field, the battling Cards came through with a l2-6 victory in the season wind-up. Marching downfield behind a series of line bucks by fullback lack Henley and scoring on touchdown passes from Romo to ends lim Reeves and Richie Hunt, the Redbirds held the Devils scoreless in the second half to finish a successful season with a hardfought victory.
