FOOTBALL TEAM BREAKS JINKS Guided by the brilliant strategy and untiring ettorts ot Coach Ralph Simpson, the hard-hitting Cardinals finished one of S.B.H.S.'s best football seasons in eight- een years, The Redbirds just missed the long-sought CBL. title, losing only to the champion Riverside Polybears, but fought through an otherwise victorious season to bring S.B.H.S. a Citrus Belt League second place. Using a man-in-motion system instead of the straight power employed by Red- bird grid machines of the past, Coach Simpsons gridders rolled up more touch- downs against their opponents than any San Bernardino team in a decade, and packed more deception and speed than S.B.H.S, fans had seen in many years. The Cards started the season with a B-U win over a surprisingly strong Hemet High School eleven on Stockton Field. Traveling to Burbank in their second en- counter, they edged out a 7-O win over the highly rated Coast League Burbank lvlaroons, scoring on a line buck by ace fullback, Leonard l-louser, alter he and Art Romo had marched the ball downtield from their own 30 on a series of smashing line bucks. Playing their first C,B.L. game under the lights ot Stockton Field, the Cards trimmed their traditional rivals, Redlands' Terriers by a 23-6 score, breaking pay dirt on two downtield marches on line smashes and end runs and the third time on a pass interception and 73 yard run-back by Leonard Houser. CARDS VS. RED LANDS 26 , W 5 , ,K A L. ,Q Z ith B i f ,-, V VARSITY VS. BU RBANK S. B. H. S. FOOTBALL TEAM BREAKS JINKS ln their second encounter with the Terriers the following Friday, the Redbirds bettered their previous score, winning 26-U, scoring on three touchdown passes and an end sweep by Leo Visbal, and completely baffling Redlands by the de- ceptiveness of the man-in-motion and flanker right. The Redbirds swept to ct 28-7 victory over an exceptionally weak Yellow- jacket squad, but suffered injuries which probably weakened their chances for a C. B. L. crown this year. Backs Leo Visbal and Leonard I-louser and center Alan O'l-lara were put out of commission for the Riverside game the following Friday night, and their loss, the fog, and a slippery ball contributed to the fighting Card- inals' 24-l9 loss to Riverside's lim Iordon and Co. Playing their best game of the season, the breaks of the game went against the Cards in the last quarter when Iordon, fleet Bear back, took a long pass for the winning touchdown and the championship. Playing the annual Thanksgiving Day classic with Pomona's Red Devils on Stockton Field, the battling Cards came through with a l2-6 victory in the season wind-up. Marching downfield behind a series of line bucks by fullback lack Henley and scoring on touchdown passes from Romo to ends lim Reeves and Richie Hunt, the Redbirds held the Devils scoreless in the second half to finish a successful season with a hardfought victory. VARSITY VS. POMONA ' .leffmg L 9 I Z SOPHOMORES VS. PERRIS SOPHOMORE FOOTBALL PGPULAR Under the able leadership of Coach Hodge, the S.B.H.S. Sophomores emerged from a successful season with a Citrus Belt League second place. The Carclettes dropped their opening tilt of the season 12-U to a powerful Perris Varsity Eleven. The following week the sophomores in their first C. B. L. game of the season de- feated the Redlands Toy Terriers when Menor scored two touchdowns with line smashes through center. The Cardettes on return game with the Redlands Sopho- mores trimmed them for a second time by a 25-U score on our Stockton Field. Scoring in every quarter, the sophomores outplayed a much lighter Redlands team. The first touchdown of the game was made on a pass to Carey who went over for the tally. ln a hard fought game the S,B,H.S. Sophomores trimmed the Riverside Cubs l8-6 on Stockton Field. Both teams put up a stubborn defensive but the Cardettes, sparked by halfback Aragon, put forth additional power to make it a Redbird Win. After being undefeated throughout the 43 season, the Cardettes muffed their chance for league championship by dropping a 25-6 tilt to the Pomona Sopho- mores on the Devils' Field. San Bernardino was held scoreless until a pass from Cloar to Hallmark connected and Hallmark went over for the only San Bernardino tally to end an otherwise victorious season. San Bernardino vs Colton VARSITY BASKETBALL ln spite of a disastrous season, this years varsity live will go down in Cardinal history as one ot the most high spirited, best coached, and well supported basket- ball teams in this schools history. The high point man of this game was Santoya, making l8 points. The S. B. five then traveled to Pomona to meet the Red Devils on their home territory. Due to the ability of the Red Devils to hit the hoops, the Cardinals were again the underdogs ot a 29-l2 score. The Cardinal quintet was next seen on the Hub Citys home court. ln the second quarter a combination ot Hunt, Greene, Doyle, and Smith broke loose to pile in the baskets tor the Cardinals. ln the last quarter Hunt scored on a tree throw to make it 23-22. X San Bernardino vs Colton High VARSITY BASKETBALL Losing their second game against Redlands Terriers this season, the Card- inals, hard luck boys of the C. B. L., Went down fighting to the tune of 33-30 de- feat in our gym. Leading through the first half, and deadlocked at 17-17 at half time, the Cards were not able to match the Terriers' long shot artistry during the last half. In the second half the Cards lost their scoring punch. Center Smith led the S. B. H. S. scoring column with 9 points. The second game with Riverside did not follow suit with the first. ln a hard fought, knock down and drag-out battle, San Bernardino dropped a 31-18 decision to the Riverside Bears on the Bear court. Unable to stop a speedy Needles High School basketball team, the Cardinals were defeated 44-22 in their home gym. San Bernardino Cardinals lost their final game of the year to the Pomona Red Devils. lt was a rough and tough encounter with both teams being charged heavily with fouls. In the first stanza, the outclassed Redbirds managed to stay with the Red Devils, but in the third and fourth quarter the Red Devils scored steadily to enlarge their 27-15 margin. The final score was 33-21. K Captain, and high point man, Doyle made 35 points, l-lunt, 33, Smith, 27, Santoya, 17, Visbal, 12, Wilson, 127 Fiscalini, 10, Greene, 8. SOPHOMORE BASKETBALL After a season including three league Wins and three league losses, the Sophomore team has produced several outstanding men to form the nucleus of next year's varsity five. With high hopes, Coach Fawley started his team in a practice game against the Colton five, the Cardettes coming out on top with a 20 to 12 win. Going to Redlands the S. B. five again came out the victors, defeating the Bull Pups 32 to 18. With much confidence, the Cardettes then played the Poly Cubs of Riverside on the Cardettes' home court, only to lose a tough game 21 to 13. Coming back after a loss to the Pomona five, 19 to l8, the Cardettes were victorious over the Colton light weights in a non-league game played on the Col- ton court and ending with a 27 to 18 score. After defeating the Bull Pups of Red- lands with a score of 36 to 21, the Cardettes team traveled to Riverside to meet the Poly Cubs for the second time, only to be defeated, 18 to 9. As a glorious climax to the season, the final game, played against Pomona's Red Devilettes on the S. B. H. S, home court, Was the hardest and most spectacular game of the season. This game was an over time affair, being a tie score at the end of the regular period. The final tally, made by Stewart and the good playing of Aragon and 1-lenthorne were the winning factors in the game, the final score being S. B. 32, Pomona, 30. GIRLS SPORTS Rhythmic activities are an integral part of the Physical Education program lor the girls of San Bernardino Senior High School. The schedule of the department is so arranged as to give each class equal opportunity to participate. National and folk dances are stressed. Through these rhythmic activities the girls gain poise, bodily exercise, social graces and an understanding ot musical rhythm. The stu- dents greatly enjoy this part ol their Physical Education program. Remedial classes have been organized for the girls who are in need of re- stricted physical education. This Work consists of postural exercises as prescribed for the individual girl. Diet is also stressed, lndividual recreative games are played by the remedial students. These classes have proved to be a great help to those girls unable to participate in regular Physical Education classe . W, Exercise! 1 l j P Winning Teams Compete in Volley Ball GIRLS' SPORTS Along with the boys of our high school, the girls also enjoy many outdoor sports in their Physical Education classes. At present, our boys varsity teams com- pete with other schools, and in the future We hope to have a girls' varsity team do the same. Every girl in the regular Physical Education classes ot San Bernardino Senior High School enjoys outdoor sports throughout most ot the school year. There are four major seasonal sports played in their respective seasons. These are volley ball, basketball, speedball, and baseball. The individual classes have inter-class games to determine the winning team. Then the winning teams of all classes in that period hold competitive games. Girls Play Baseball 'Tk-4.,.,'x.' VARSITY TRACK Strength in runner-up positions has brought victory to San Bernardino High Schools track and field squad much to the delight of the team, its coach, and the Student Body. The track squad was a little late in getting started this season, but that had no bearing upon its performance. ln the first major track meet this year, the Redbirds were victorious over Colton and Redlands, the score being San Bernardino 52, Colton 43, Redlands 35. With a scarcity of material, he has turned out a good team. As the Tyro goes to press, the Cardinals have one victory and a defeat on their record. S. B. H. S. defeated Redlands l6-5. The Cards lost a close game to Colton With a 4-2 score in favor oi the Yellow-jackets. The returning lettermen this year were Krouskup, Hunt, Visbal, Dodson, Cali- roy, and Fiscalini.
