President, Miss Annie Laurie Willis, First Girls' League President, Navy Service Mang Recruiting Of- i iicer of San Bernardino. , ' MWA I 'N r1,LfQ,.l Foreword TI-IIS YEAR the publication of the Tyro Annual marks the fiftieth year of service to the students and faculty of S.B.H.S. During this period the Tyro Annual has each year recorded the activities and highlights of the passing year. In looking through past issues we noticed many changes in styles of clothes, methods of transportation and type of print, We also noticed some customs that have lived through the years, the one we like best is loyalty of the students to S.B.I-I.S. MANY GRADUATES and undergraduates have joined the armed forces of our country and are fighting on many hattlefronts in the air, on the ground, and on the sea so that future students in this and other schools may continue to learn to be loyal to their school, teachers, friends, and country. THIS ISSUE of the Tyro Annual contains the second Honor Roll of graduates and undergraduates who have given their services and, some, their lives for their country. Dedication IN THIS FIFTIETH publication of the Tyro Annual, we are particularly pleased to dedicate the book to a graduate of these fifty years, who has always been all out for her school and her country - Margaret Miles. MARGARET will always be remembered for her cheery smile and her unselfish personality. She has lightened our tasks with her banter and good humor whatever the irntationflists for commencement, the Tyro, or the daily announce' ments. Margaret is a Million Dollar secretary, She owed part of her efficiency perhaps to the fact that she has been graduated from SiB.l'l.S. She came to work here in November of 1926 after taking her business training at Longmires in this city. HER NVILLINGNESS to cooperate and her outstanding ability have made everyone love her, and we can see only continued happiness ahead for her in her new home. Margaret S. Miles, Secretary fo Mr. H. C. While the seniors get all the glory connected with school government and activities, the underclasses really do their share of work and play. Because they compose a majority of our school population, it is they who really elect our officers and pass our school laws. Most spectacular of all this year was the work of the hall monitors first semester and the excellent sophomore assembly. All in all, the unclerclassmen have made themselves known this year as they have in no year past. Finally, it must be remembered that their loyalty to class is an indication of their loyalty to their country. This title was chosen because this year, more than ever, the girls are needed to fill many jobs vacated by war workers and by service men and to take on new jobs created by the war. Knitting and sewing clubs were started in which quite a few girls participated. They also took on extra Saturday and after school jobs. Several groups of girls loaned their assistance at crop harvesting time by picking grapes. THE GIRLS' LEAGUE cabinet was headed by Ruth Hall, president, Helen Stocker, vice president, 'Louise Carlson, secretary, Lollie Lupton, treasurer, Marilyn Dudley, social chairman, Barbara Knight, program chairman, Janet Ralphs, school service, Nancy Hellyer, welfare chairman, Shirley Graefe, publicity for first semester, Eva Ford Hope, publicity for second semester, Phyllis Lloyd, Helen ,lean Binney, student body social chairman, Mary Jane Threatt, G.A.A., Hollie Lou Jolley, Sof bobans, Shirley Nish, Hi Tri, Olive Rodgers, service club, and last but not least, Miss Alverda Hertzler, advisor. Rcdricuez Victoria Ao Sl Bl THIS YEAR the Assoeiated Student Body and the ExfConimittce followed a wellorganized program in working toward victory. The whole spirit of the school was changed and all efforts directed toward a definite goal. The first hig accompf lishment of the year was the scrap drive. This was followed hy the jeep drive which was the pride and joy of our student hody. In just fifteen days 557158 was raised: enough money to huy nine and a half jeeps. However, several hundred more dollars worth of honds and stamps were hought in the following month. FOLLONVING THE regular routine, then, the exfconiniittee sponsored two assemblies, one of which hoostcd the jeep drive, The four afternoon dances proved more popular this year than ever hefore. The music for one of the afternoon dances was furnished by a negro hand from the San Bernardino Air Depot and admission was a defense stamp. First semester Exfcommittee officers were Andy Kan, presif dent: Bob Peters, viee president: Bernice Carlson, secretaryg seeond semester leaders were Don Ware, president: Glenn johnson, viee president: Willard Redline, secretary, and Helen Jean Binney, social chairman for the year. Many new campus clubs such as the knitting and sewing clubs are a part of the program. The school has been divided into six divisions: Sea, Land, Air, Community, Production, and General. All students ineligible for the first five because they lack the required subjects, are classified in the General group. Each group has two faculty sponsors and three student sponsors, a Commander, Lt. Commander, and Recorder at its head. Among its accomplishments were the housing survey, victory garden planting, and an extensive program of physical fitness. THE QUIL'L AND SCRCLL Club does much to promote an interest in journalism writing and publication. Most of the members are on the current staff of the Tyro Weekly because to become a member, a student must have received a recommending grade in at least one semester of journalism class and must be a member of one of the school honor societies. Good writers are needed now days to bring the news of the world to the public in a clear and concise manner. Most of the students in the club are working toward a career in the journalistic field. There' fore the experience gained now in journalism under the supervision of their sponsor, Miss Kathryn Williams, will be invaluable to them in the future. Grieving J., Hatcher P. J' 5 ,:- F. S. Forenslcs Clubs GIVE War Talks CARDINAL EORENSICS was a particularly active club this semester because of the lack of inter school activities. They were ably sponsored by Miss Ella Connor, assisted by Willard Redline and John McArdle, first and second semester presidents respectively. Among their accomplishments was a very interest' Epanel discussion given for P.T.A. on Reconstruction After the War . They also put on several successful radio programs over KEXM as well as presenting speakers and discussions for local service clubs. Aside from business, social affairs included a waffle supper and a gingerbread treat. NATIONAL ECRENSIC activity was hampered by lack of transportation and other wartime inconveniences this year. But as usual, they placed in every contest they entered. In the Lyons Club contest, Bill Woods took first place while Cordelia Van Scoyoc and Verne Stadtrnan were strong in the finals. Evelyn Steele carried away top honors in the American Legion contest and then went to Colton to capture second place. Bill Woods and Cordelia Van Scoyoc were in at the finals. While this goes to press plans are being made to enter the Redlands University contest and we know they will emerge with flying colors. They also enjoyed many social activities, their main event being a party to welcome back Mrs. Coffey, English and speech instructor. Much credit is due this fine organization. Future Leaders Belong to Perieleans and Sohohans THE SCBOBAN CLUB is composed of honor students of the high school. They must be outstanding in some special field such as speech or dramatics, and must maintain membership in either C. S. F. or the Local Honor Society. Their main activity for the year was the U. S. defense stamp sales. Through Soboban efforts twentyffive hundred dollars worth of bonds and stamps were sold through the school. The aim of the organization is to promote school spirit and help keep up better morale. The club is ably sponsored by physical education instructor, Mrs. Winifred Poss. ' THE PERICLEAN CLUB is composed of boys who have proved to be outstanding in character and citizenship and who have high scholastic attainment. This year they got right into the swing of things with Willard Redline as president. They sponsored the first afternoon dance, held in the cafeteria, and one of the plays. Their annual Christmas party for little children was called off because of their inability to provide proper transportation because of gas rationing. Although opportunity to play for football games and other affairs was cut down this year, the hand appeared whenever possible to boost our tcam on to victory, The majorcttcs were one of the most important parts of the band and were highlights of many a parade. The hand was very willing and coopemtive whenever they were needed for civic parades, and programs, as well as putting on good performances in our own auditorium for school plays, programs and assemblies. THE ORCHESTRA class was formed to encourage musical talent among the students. It has succeeded in creating interest in thc hcst music in the school as a whole. This class has worked hard to provide the excellent music which is a suitable and effective hackground for our plays, assemblies, and musicals, Many fine musicians have been turned out from this class and much credit is due to Mr. Osman Ingraham who so ably directs this organization and the band. s G.o'c':i ci n l ag-., ar is N P., Har- F 'a-1 ight C. They receive no pay or glory, but they work hard. Every time the auditorium is used for a school affair these boys are on hand to lend their assistance. Their big job comes with every school play. They must be on hand for all rehearsals and spend extra time preparing and clearing the stage for each performance. They handle everything pertaining to the stage from taking care of the lights, to raising and lowering curtains and juggling scenery and properties. Much credit should be given to them for their cheerfulness and their patient cooperation. THE USHERETTES are a group. of girls organized by Mr. Howard H. Palmer to usher for school programs and performances. They make a very colorful picture in their uniforms of black satin slacks and brilliant red satin blouses with gold trimmings. The red and black carries out the Cardinal color scheme and is very impressive. They participate in social affairs just as the other organizations do and have get togethers every so often. To become a member they must be able to walk correctly and gracefully and look well in their uniforms. Stage Crew in Acfio U. Thespians in War Time THIS YEAR NATIONAL Thespians has turned its efforts toward Victory Corps work and other activities of presentfday importance, In spite of the fact that plays were curtailed to only two this year, several new members were admitted to the club. Because of gasoline and tire rationing, play activities were sharply reduced and rehearsals were hindered because of the possibility of blackouts. After victory activities will again be resumed with renewed energy. THE CARDINAL THESPIAN was late in getting started this year, but they made up for that later during second semester. To be eligible for membership in the club one must have had a speaking part in at least one school play. The only social activities enjoyed were the two initiations. Under the able direction of sponsor and drama coach, Howard H. Palmer, with the assistance of Bobbie Graham, president of the club, they sponsored the annual junior high school play tournament. They were also responsible for a very successful school play and entertained the student body in several assemblies. 0ur Girls Knit and Sew for Victory ALTHOUGH KNITTING is a 'lmustu on almost every girl's list of accompf lishments, a special group of girls this year distinguished themselves by devoting a part of their spare time to doing Red Cross knitting. The students themselves donate a good part of the yarn used and the rest is furnished by the local Red Cross chapter. The club is also a new member of the Victory Corps and is sponsored by Miss Ovcrby and Miss NVilliams. Meetings are held every Wediiesdaiy evening after school at school. So far the girls have turned out many useful articles such as toe socks, I-:nee bands, and socks. Besides gaining valuable experience, the girls are doing their part for the effort. THE SEWING CLUB was another newly organized group to further our schools participation in the war effort. It is another important part of the Victory Corps which is the schools newest plan to aid in working for victory. Meetings are held one night a week after school in one of the sewing rooms. Membership is voluntary and there are about twentyffive girls participating. All the sewing is done for the local Red Cross chapter and is under the able direction of Miss Ruby Stahlford, sewing teacher. Among their accomplishments are afghans, slippers, fracture pillows, pillow slips, and many other useful articles for our fighting men. tx Q A I C ' hi 'J' Y D ,W I. - K '- I ' A Leg? +5 QM, Fi-s' 'ow Bo S ' ce-eg-3 M, SIQQT-is P Mover - B.. We Learn of 0ther Races THE ROCKET' CLUB was another important addition to campus groups this year. lts aim is to give the colored students greater opportunity to be of service to their school and community. Because the organization is new, full plans for the rest of this year have not yet been completed. Some activities planned for the future include sponsoring an assembly and perhaps an afternoon dance. They are also working toward Victory Corps work and already have proved very successful in their Work on the housing survey. A complete record of each member's accomplish' ments will be kept. Cofsponsors of the club are Miss Dorothy Doolittle and Mr. Webster Hall. The officers include Billy Boyd, Presidentg Barbara Saville, Vice' presidentg and Loretha Hollings, Secretary. THB SPANISH CLUB is particularly important this year because of our close association with the allied countries of South America. A good many of our neighbors to the south of us are Spanish speakingg therefore in these days the services of the Spanish Club are invaluable. Their purpose is to learn the language Well enough that they can converse fluently and easily write the language. Their meetings are held every Wednesday afternoon after school under the direction of their sponsor, Miss Norton. This year's activities include making large scrapbooks containing magazine stories and joke books for our service men in the hospital. Most social activities were eliminated to give time to important work. l M Dlusiv and Svlmlarship for WVar THE AEOLIAN CLUB was up to its usual best this year proving that music is of great importance in these times. The club did a great deal this year in presenting programs outside of school as well as for the students. They presented a very colorful and beautiful Christmas pageant at an assembly and put on a patriotic assembly based on Ballad For America to promote this year's patriotic theme. Some of the members who put on programs for local service clubs and camps. were very gratefully received. Meetings were held every other Monday afterf noon under the sponsorship of Miss Martha Alice Mackenzie, aided by President Dean Bottini. VJE ARE EXCEEDINGLY proud this year of the California Scholarship Federation. In spite of the many activities and jobs keeping our students busy, we had the largest number of Seal Bearers, twentyfthree this year, that we have had in previous years. Many students have devoted much of their time to Victory Corps jobs, such as knitting. sewing, and even picking crops: but they have also found the time to keep up with their studies and make C.S.F. qualifications for four semesters. one of them being in the senior year. Social Affairs Keep Up Civilian Morale ALTHOUGH THE SOCIAL LIFE of San Bernardino High School was sharply curtailed because of gasoline rationing and tire shortage, morale was kept up by afternoon dances and a few evening affairs. One of the best social affairs was the rally for the Redlands football game held at the Eox Theatre. Two excellent pictures were shown and a pep rally with vaudeville acts and skits was held between features, The Pericleans sponsored it with Willard Redline and Don Ware heading the committees. THE FALL RECEPTION held in the cafeteria was to welcome the sophof mores and other new students. There was an unusually large turnout and everyone thoroughly enjoyed himself. Afternoon dances were held about once a month. They were sponsored by different clubs and were used for pep rallies, pencil drives, and for selling defense stamps. The juniorfSenior Prom was the outstanding event of the year. The transportation problem was responsible for some changes, but we all agreed it was one of the best dances S. B. H. S. has had. Their many intricate routines furnished entertainment at rallies and assemblies throughout the year. For the first time the girls marched with the band and made a very colorful picture in their bright red sweaters, white skirts, and huge red and white pom poms. The girls were chosen at the first of thc year hy Mrs. Wi1iif1'ed Poss of the physical education department and rehearsed every day during their gym period. Their activities produced much of our school spirit. PUTTING THEIR HEART and soul into their work, these three yell' leaders enthusiastically led our school yells. Dressed in their red sweaters and white skirts, they added color and vitality to all our games. Under their supervision the student body cheered our team on to many a great victory and rallied their spirits even in the few defeats. They introduced several new yells, including a chant, and made variations in some of the old. Darlene Hagler was head yell leaderg Barbara Knight and Betty Cocking, assistants. rf-n .t M, ws- fi 2 -Z'f'Pt f' r 4. Rv . The story involves two sweet old ladies who come from a fine Brooklyn family. Their only peculiarity is a penchant for murdering unattached elderly gentlemen with poisoned elderberry wine. The plot becomes very hilarious when the old ladies, whose victims total thirteen, find that their nephew also has thirteen bodies to his credit. The sweet old aunts are played by Betty Love and a prominent newcomer Sue jordan. The three nephews, a homicidal maniac, and a very sane young newspaper man, and one who thinks he is Teddy Roosevelt are played by Bill Perdew, Bill Palmer, and Jack Stone respecf tively. The love interest is furnished by Naomi Hunt and the quack doctor is Deanne Wiley. Leonard Schweitzer, Kent Oehl, Bob Sawyer, Gerald Blackwell represented policemen and Jim Yurkunski, Reverend Dr. Harper, Bob Quinn, Mr. Gibbs, and Carleton Spitzer, Mr. Witherspoon. Pasadena Game f 5 T 4 Basketball Trains 0ur Boys T0 Be Mentally Alert THE QUICK and exciting game of Basketball is truly a game which calls for wide awake and physically fit boys. These qualifications are called for with men in all branches of the services. A USUAL group of fine boys reported to Coach Fawley in November and with less than a month of practice, had their first game. Their first games were a series of games with Colton High with an overwhelming victory for us, giving the team real confidence for final victory in the C. B. L. BUT THEIR first league game was lost to Redlands 3027. Again the boys were caught off guard by Riverside beating the Cards 4367 The Pomona game was the last one for many Seniors who graduated in Februaryg therefore the boys put everything into the game and put us over for a victory 3966. 7 Left VOM SOI, 75 ll sketball Trains 0ur Boys To Bo Dlentally Alert FOR THE SECOND game with Riverside, of this season, a completely revamped team beat the Riverside team 47125. Again the Cards were triumphant by walloping Redlands 3760. The boys were really oll' to victory by beating Pomona 43 37, and, in turn, winning the C. B, L. championship, THE TEAM this year compared favorably with the teams so much spoken of in 1925 and 1926. We could hardly point out any group ol stars or any star this year, but all were stars in their position, even in substituting. To prove this the first quarter substitutes had to take over the team at the midyear and did a fine job of it. XVITH FINAL VICTORY at hand, the Cards played Pasadena for C. B. L, playoff, but Pasadena proved to be too big and experienced and downed the Redbirds 4337 and thus a brilliant season was ended. Holmgren L., Track Is Training 0ur Boys To Chase the Japs IN THE LISTS of sports there is not one sport that builds a person up more physically than track. Track trains in endurance and wind, builds up muscle, and makes for good sportsmanship. With this in mind the boys went out to train with Coach Hodge for the 1943 track season. WITH THE SI-ICRTAGE of gasoline and tires, the boys canceled all distant track meets and held postfoffice track meets with them, sending results of each event and comparing the results. This type of competition does not give the boys the most enjoyment out of the meets, but the boys will go through with it with flying colors. WITH ONLY A few returning lettermen, the team held high hopes and aspirations of winning the C. B. L. Gay Waldroup is very likely to take the high honors on the hurdles, Crville Best and Arthur Romo in the sprints. With so many boys being called into service and joining up, it is hard to get all the talented boys, but what our team lacks in talent, it makes up in real stamina and fight. WITH SUCH RAINY weather the boys haven't trained as much as they should, but they are sure to do well at their first real track meet, a practice meet at Riverside. With such an early deadline we cannot report on any of their progress, but we are sure of success and victory. 76 ingue M., Broadbelf B., Wal- droup G., Nemefh B., Bristow . o J., Twomley D., De- Baseball, A Galne That Requires Coordination of Mind and Muscles BASEBALL IS TRULY an Amcrican game or k'the American game. In this game a boy can build sportsmanship, coordination, and good physical fitness. XVith a fine coach and thirtyffive boys out, the baseball team started off rather poorly because of the war uncertainty. Coach johnson assured the boys that they would play though, even if they had to play among their own intrafmural leagues. ONLY TWO RETURNING lettcrmcn, Bob Peters and Virgil Fondy, does not make too bright a future, but for the past two years our team has captured the C. B. 'L. championship with a less prospective outlook. The boys have taken a lot of commando training which was not required, but just to build their bodies up for the service of the United States. And with that spirit we are sure that the boys will make a fine showing wherever or whenever they play. COACH JOHNSCN is planning a tournament at San Bernardino, at which a day of baseball will be played between the league teams. flrj' l i ' ,fl r r f 'ff . st w let o rig'-rfzvloozs Cashman, Erickson, Baer, VIII- lrins, Brooks, Morfgovem, Freeman, Gragon, Murrkf, Hernandez, Wells, O4COV'Of. Endurance, coordination, wind and stickftofitfiveness are only a few of the qualifications of a good tennis player. Our team had 9 good tennis players with as many qualifications as our big strong football men. ONLY A PERSCN who has played the game knows what it takes to play tennis, and it takes plenty. Under Coach Hodge a rapidly improving team is fighting its way to the top with john Gray and Bill Woods as the star singles players, and Wayne Vroman and A. C. Ferguson the leading doubles players. The first matches with the San Bernardino Junior College, our team lost to J. C. because of our lack of experience and training. BECAUSE OF THE deadline of this publication this year, we cannot follow the team as we have in past years. This All out for Victory issue of the Tyro Annual is a salute to the men and women members of the Armed Forces. The publication of this issue of the Tyro Annual is its 50th year of service to the San Bernardino High School. It also marks the 10th year of our most able sponsor, Miss Ella Connor, whose council, guidance, patience, and experience is genuinely appreciated by all members of the staff. Without her help, we would be like a ship on the ocean, without a navigator to chart its course. Our most capable and efficient financial adviser, Mr. Hall, has again planned and executed all subscription campaigns and has directed expenditures. Mr. Paul of the Sun Company, has again given us the very best of cooperation and help. A note of thanks is also extended to Mr. and Mrs. Starke, photographers, for their aid and patience with the individual pictures. The cover by the Becktold Company is of their usual high standard. We appreciate sincerely the cooperation and help of all who contributed to the success of this Tyro. You, the student body, are the final judges of our efforts to produce an interesting history of S.B.H.S. for the year 1943. We hope it will bring you happiness and many pleasant memories.
