BOARD No story would be quite complete with- out a guide to lead the characters through the plot. For this we have our School Board. Their part of the story takes place in the school business manager's office, where they meet to discuss matters of importance concerning the school district. They are shown at one of their regular meetings. Left to right are Joe E. Smith, vice-presidentg John F. Barron, Superintendentg John Ben- son, presidentg Jack Lomazg Odell Morrowg Ray Gomez, secretaryg Fred A. Boothg and Clyde L. Fincher. L 11. K f. Our story began on August 31, 1955. Like most short stories, ours has a setting, characters, plot, climax, and local color. The setting of our story is on the campus of San Benito High School with the administration and teachers guiding our activities and leading us to high and better goals The banging of lockers the babble of voices in the halls the puzzled looks exchanged in chemistry class the noon rush in the cafeteria the cheering at the football games the happy rhythm of feet in the hall are activities that write our story performed by the characters the suave seniors jubilant Juniors smiling sophomores and frightened freshmen The theme for our story lS provided in the fall on the football field and basketball court In the spring tennis and track add the local color What better climax for a story than the election of Who s Who and class favorites? The wide variety of extra curricular activities form our plot Everyone plays a part whether it be substituting for grade school teachers debating or a long band rc hearsal With plcture and prose we have endeavored to capture this story As you turn the pages of your 1956 El Sendero we hope you will find it to be a complete pictorial story of life at San Benito High School and offer many pleasant hours of reminiscing for you 4 l 7 ! 7 3 7 7 Y F 1 ' 1 , , - . 4 ' n . 7 1 ' ' 1 'B . . 1 . Through these halls roam our students and our faculty, the characters of our story. In these halls and in these rooms takes place the action of our story. Our book would not be complete without the scene. Our school began in 1909 with one student and one faculty member. From that beginning, it has grown steadily through the years to its present proportions-with more than thirty faculty members and over six hundred and seventy students. We are proud of our schoolg it is ours. This brick building, built in 1931, is dear to the hearts of both faculty and stu- dents. To them, it represents three things- work, play, and business. 6 .-Q.. 'h.... Around them rc- volve the activities, the organizations, and the sports. Without the classes the classrocms would be useless. Without them, the story would be pointless. Students in these classes are the ones who run the school organizations. The seniors feel that they are busyg the juniors feel that the seniors are loafing, the sopho- mores feel that they couldn't possibly be busierg and the wise freshmen know that they are busy. Many students feel that the school and school activities take up too much time from their daily duties like sleep, so they take school time to do this. This busy senior took an after-dinner siesta during fourth period. CHARACTERS NS 9 K mfg -6' -N if , I .pf XR x 'XI' ' v Zl Senlors Inmate Fmal Chapter AGI! There are organizations to fit every student, whether his interests lie in the honorary societies, the world of lin- guistics, preparation for the future, music, making things with his hands, athletics, or any one of twenty other things. Students who join clubs feel that they are learning things which will help them in the future-responsibilities. They meet stu- dents with the same interests as theirs, they do the things that they like to do. At con- ventions, they meet people from other schools who share their interests. Organizations fill the need of local color in our story. This makes the story ours, for these organizations, with these officers, could be in no other school. LOCAL COLOR A' . During December, January, and February, the school is alive with news of basketball-high-point man, speedy, and quick-handling are three common terms. Again in the spring, all thoughts turn to- ward track and tennis. Yes, ours is a sports-minded school. We back our teamsters with all of the fierce loyalty high school students can produce. We train our athletes young. From the time they enter high school, students are caught up in the enthusiasm which sur- rounds the never-ending circle of sports. Seocnd row, Gerald,Keith Deen: ' 7 y 7 This ls 0ur Story We welcome you to our Vanity Fair A Court of Swings beyond compare. This introduction climaxes weeks of prep- aration for the annual school coronation, Vanity Fair. This year, the Prologue and Epilogue were read by Karen Tenneyg Allan Hayse served as Master of Ceremonies. Walter Stratton was the Court jester. Serv- ing as crown bearer was Teddy Watson, and serving as train bearers were Mollie Ann Scogin and Martha Kay Reese. Following the presentation of the fa- vorites, a style show was presented with high school girls modeling clothes from various downtown clothing stores. Roses and swings dotted the stage, giv- ing the appearance of a contemporary gar- den. The theme was further carried out in the decorations for the formal dance which followed the coronation. Music for the dance was furnished by the Stardusters. Another group of favorites is repre- sented bwhe stude ts selected for Who's Who-the Xoutgndigi sQdents inx our lhgh Q ' . f' 1 A x school. Q 4 Wl1o's Who tvs.- Student Body last year agreed upon a change in their coronation plans of past years. Vanity Fair, the coronation, was changed to admit class favorites, elected by the students, and a Who's Who section was added to the annual. The 16 students in Who's Who compose 2V2 per- cent of the student body. Candidates must be juniors or seniors. A junior may be listed in Who's Who the following year if he qualifies when he is a senior. Students are selected for this honor by the faculty. Those selected represent students who are outstanding in school life and in school activities. Everyone takes part in the pep ral- lies, the plays and the Hallowe'en carnival. These activities reflect the thoughts and interests of the student body. In the activities, even the freshmen feel that they can take an active part. Even the shyest newcomer will laugh heartily at the antics of the comedian in the school play. Activities are a vital part of our story. They are the connecting feature which joins together the characters, the plot, the local color and the theme. ,ww Zliffnwf, MMM, ZPJUMQMJ f QQZAQQLMW PLOT 130 ,.. ,,., 1,1-.
