Speed bumps were put in the parking lot not only to slow down traffic, but also to make the search for parking space more exciting Cond annoying? for student drivers. The crosswalk was freshly painted twice as wide as before, so students could get to their classes across the street with less crowding and not be late every day. We also had new classrooms added to accommodate he larger-than-ever student body of over l,65O people, long with 22 new teachers to educate all of us. Looking at all these changes we have, how can we grow igger? We hope everyone attending SBJUHS had a fan- astic teacher, be it freshman, sophomore, junior, or sen- or. A place where people look like nerds, a place where students dress for the beach on a cold winter's day. The school halls were filled with crazi- ness, bringing out a light atmosphere during homecoming week. The most visible type of craziness was the clothes modeled by students. Multi-colored punk rock hairstyles were the Hin look during spirit week. Julia Hyun, Rally Club president, says, 'lPeople don't realize that it takes a lot of time and hard work to put together a really successful rally. The spirit lead- ers like to do their part by getting peo- ple's spirits up so they won't be afraid to get involved. You can do your part by getting involved and showing that you care. So next time you see some nerd knocking your books out of your hands, don't panic. Spirit Student Life What in the world do students do when they aren't hard at work in class? After all, school is the place we go to study and learn wonderful things like algebra and Spanish, not anything else that could be called 'lfun, right?? Most students any- where will say WRONG!! High school is a major part of most of our social lives. lt's the place we go to see our friends and talk about REALLY im- portant things, like the gorgeous guy or girl that just moved into town, or the great time we had at the dance last Friday night. Besides all of the hard work there is to do, most of us have to admit being in high school is fun land would be much more fun if we could get rid of all the classeslll. Some of the things that make high school fun are rallies, brunch and lunchtime, and after school activities like football and basketball games Out and About Student Life and after-game dances. Remember, it's a lot harder to get into the dances if you don't go to the high school! Rallies are mandatory at SBJUHS but they are a lot of fun even though you do HAVE to go. Most students WANT to go to them anyway. Your attitude makes the big difference in a rally. lf you go and just fall asleep the whole time or think it's a drag, obvi- ously you won't have the greatest time. But if you go and cheer, clap, and try to enjoy yourself, rallies can be a real blast. Brunch and lunchtime activities in- clude walking around the campus, talking, and the all-time favorite pas- time, eating. We can see that there is plenty more to do at school than work, work, work. High school can be a fan- tastic experience - especially when you're a Balerl .mg ff? X235 N7 -' ' - ' 1 F - f rg W1 Sf 1 Q W V N 5-af 1 1 1- 'Vin i . The perfect ingredients for a perfect homecoming parade. The theme for this year's parade was 'lgame shows , with the senior's in- terpretation of The Wheel of For- tune winning first place. Second place was given to the sophomores for their float, titled, Football Feud with third going to the freshmen's version of the Gong Show . Pacific Grove, this year's oppo- nents for homecoming, was better than ever. The Baler Band dressed in some very original costumes, enter- tained an excited crowd of over 2,000 football fans during half-time. Also in the half-time activities was the crowning of the very elated home- coming queen, Rachel Zuniga. Her escort was the distinguished Jeff Ross. This thrilling evening of football was wrapped up with a 42-12 victory over the Pacific Grove Breakers. Homecoming this year was fun for all due to the combined efforts of the student body and faculty. lt was tru- ly a night to remember, said Kris- tinea Anderson. According to Judy Bermudez, There were more people that were excited about homecom- ing this year. lt seemed like they had fun organizing it. David Ortiz seemed to say it for all of us when he said, lt was so crowded it was like one giant Baler. Homecoming Student Life ' 'n I I 'L' ll L I M! , .Q fri a x , -uf, :.'QfQf . Did you get dressed half asleep this morning? Oh, and your hair, no time to comb er whot?l Believe me we have heard those lines and others like it all year. Who are we? We are Mods and Thrashers. A Mod is any young person whose life practically evolves around mod- ern music and style and a Thrasher is a person that skateboards and whose interests are also music and style. Some Mod styles are torn jeans, flannel shirts, over-sized T-shirts, black chinese flats and black Con- verse hightops. Some of our other fave things are black suspenders, hightop Vans, army jackets, boxer- shorts, and long black skirts. We also like late l96O'ish looking mod sweaters or just about anything else we can find. And find where, you might ask? Tina Candelaria thinks Goodwill and second hand stores are about the best for unusual, mod clothes. 'll go to malls and regular stores sometimes, but my second hand clothes are still my favorites. Tiny Espinoza agrees Goodwill and second hand stores are cool because you can get clothes there that no one else has and that look really cool! Leti Candelaria likes to get jewelry there. As for music most Mods and Thrashers like music ranging from new modern music to hardcore punk. Bands like: Depeche Mode, Oingo- Boingo, Tears for Fears, Souxie and the Banshees, The Cure, The B-52's. Fashion Clash Fads Student Life 'A f 1 - fn. Vffi' ff., 1 59 ' xff 'P 'x ffm ? Costumes, tricks, and treats were the main attractions throughout the entire school at the first Annual Hal- loween Costume Contest, put on by the yearbook staff. The contest was a big success, thanks to the participa- tion of most of the student body. For the judges it was extremely dif- ficult to choose only one first, sec- ond, ond third place, but after long and hard thinking, Ms. Clark, Mr. Van Gerpen, and Mr. Lavorato finally decided who the Biggest, Brightest, and Best costumes belonged to. As stated by Sophomore Lana Shelton. lt was a great way for people to ex- press their imaginations, and as it turned out, some people had some pretty wild thoughts! Working! Parties! Day or night just like dynamite!! Balers have varying schedules for after school hours. Most students have after school jobs that they consider the hot working spots of Hollister, such as McDonald's, Bob's Drive ln, and K8tS Market. After working hours the Balers get ready to take the town, as shown by Senior Laura Flores filling up her truck with gas to go down town. Usually taking the town means either going on a date, to a party, or just getting together and going out to eat. Those Balers who work do have distinct feelings about work. Senior Gina Lomanto who works at Bob's Burger quoted, l work to support my habitsl Junior Judy Bermudez says, Work takes up too much time from your free time, even though the mon- ey does come in handy. Then there are those Balers who would prefer not to have a job. Senior Jeff Cross believes in being with friends, as he was quoted as say- ing, l'The thing that is most satisfying to me is non-school activities, such as attending wild parties or going on a hot date with a beautiful woman. Jessica Delgadillo, Senior, says, l would rather work than go straight home after school. So as you can see, Balers all have different opinions and views about the working world, but all are the best at what they do. After After Hour Student Life misss ,Q W Q.. fr' 3 I-lour Balers l. These classes help you pre- pare for the business world and your family life after high school. The classes offered this year range from a variety of computer classes to creat- ing your own specialties in Consumer Foods. This year ROP classes have increased, so that there are a lot more subjects offered now. A Home Economics class, Explor- ing Childhood, gave students a chance to realize the responsibility of being a parent. To accomplish this they were given a baby egg to care for and keep track of for a week. Hopefully, at the end of the week their baby egg was still in one piece! All of these courses are electives, so if you ever need to fill an empty semester, any of these classes will prove rewarding. 20 Business!Home Economics Academics A Home Economics - l. The majority of our students, such as Todd Silva and Eric Snyder, believe that the teachers make the class. Our English Depart- ment has a variety of personalities ranging from the humorous side of Mr. Van Gerpen and Mr. Allen to the informative side of Mr. Sullens and Mr. Doucett. Thanks to the dedicated staff we learn how to analyze words and use them effectively. The four years of English class that it takes to graduate will be filled with words, words, words! There is no more visible indication of your knowledge than the words you use, says Mr. Sullens. We start out with a freshman vo- cabulary list that has words on it that we can actually pronounce. Soon we work our way into Senior English with words that make us wonder if we are still speaking the same language. Mary McCullough says, The words are not a part of my every day vo- cabulary and they strain my brain. All the classes in between teach us to read and comprehend, organize a composition, prepare various speeches, and of course, know ex- actly what part of speech every word is and how to spell it correctly. 22 English Academics ff Q f W' MQ X 5 o U '70 . . What do all these things have in common? For one thing, they all be- long to the area of school called fine arts. The department consists of all foreign language classes, arts and crafts, and music. A choir was started in the begin- ning of the year, taught by Mr. Fields. They had an original enrollment of IO people, 8 girls and 2 guys, but Mr. Fields retired due to illness early in the year and choir was dropped from the schedule. In foreign languages, Miss Lassa- ga's French classes learn about French culture and cuisine as well as the language. The Spanish classes, taught by Mr. Muro, Mr. Robledo, and Miss Lassaga, also cook foods and study cultures of Spanish speak- ing countries. Mrs. Calle Allen heads the arts and crafts department. She teaches classes from beginning art to a.d- vanced ceramics to painting and drawing. 24 Fine Arts Academics ine Arts I. Oooooh! Junior Stephanie Brengman can real- ly mold. 2. These courses include Auto Shop, Agricul- ture, Mechanical Drawing, Wood Shop, and Metal Shop. All of these classes teach new and exciting skills that you can use in the future. Stu- dents who do not wish to attend a four year college can find a promising career in any of the above fields. New proposals, such as changing Me- chanical Drawing to an ROP class and having computer drafting help stu- dents get an idea and a taste for skills that are helpful. When asked how he felt about Me- chanical Drawing Jeff Cross replied, I feel that this Industrial Arts pro- gram is a great benefit to those who wish to further their skills in the field of drafting. Jeff, a senior, is a special projects student. Another one is Sen- ior Mike Elliott who said, 'IThis is an interesting and challenging course. The new computer has made it a lot easier. In Wood Shop, a three year veteran, Senior Robert Parra feels, It's a good skill to have. New teacher, Mr. Agan, adds great excitement and is making things happen. Mr. Agan comments, I feel that Auto Shop is very impor- tant to society because the world needs transportation to get around. 26 Industrial Arts Academics 'NJQSNX -0 Cc c 'clip ,bkvuvcfvcfl qolfuf czxljf' qgcvx, S-590 If MN 'UK-L sfniobccxsx f-M fe -ff-2- 1,.fl...fl...,, -Swfm-M Q 'geo v AF. lL-JL flu kvuofx bQ1,fuu.ofL,' Q fl l -Qwci e Ubmv Q l. Or, per- haps, that three times two has equalled five? Do you have night- mares about syntax errors? If so, you have probably also had the privilege of Mr. Chen, the Math Department Chairman, laughing over your test paper. Math blows us awayl agreed Julie Miller, Mary McCul- lough, and Rosendo Perez. We have had more than l,2OO stu- dents enrolled in math classes this year. These classes range from Gen- eral Math, to Computers, to Trig. And why do you ask, are we suffering through these trials and tribulations? Well, it is because the math units to graduate have been raised from twenty to twenty-tive units. So we dust off our calculators and protrac- tors, and read up on our calculator manuals. At least we will always know the meaning of the Pythagore- an Theorem. But you know you are really in trouble when you have to spell it! 28 Math Academics l l. The Sci- ence Department is one of the most im- portant departments in our school. The science classes stress the concepts of study, observation, and experiments. Science is taught to inform us about life and our environment. According to Connie Guaracha, Science sometimes starts out boring, but as the year goes on, you learn a lot. The science classes consist of Earth Science, Biology, Chemistry, and Phys- ics. Marietta De La Cruz says that she can't wait to start dissecting. Earth Science is based on our solar system and the world around us. Hu- man Biology explains the system of our bodies and our growing years. Chemis- try is more of a mathematic based class which explores the atoms and chemi- cals in our planet. One of our school's newest science classes is Physical Science. lt is also based on the atoms of the earth and the study of protons. Hopefully this means the science department is getting BIG- GER AND BETTER!!! 30 Science Academics K ' 3 .. l. Mr. Masoni explains the sys- tem of the heart to Senior Mi- chelle Lowry. 2. Chicano Studies helps me find out about my ancestors and my past, says Junior Becky Castaneda. You are probably wondering where current events and debates tie in, right? Well, I will show you how. Take for ex- ample a current event on money ex- change rate in Portugal. Where would it apply? If you guessed Economics you're right!!! Here's another example. The earthquake in Mexico City on Septem- ber I9, l985, can be categorized in ei- ther Geography, Earth Science, or both. Debates on subjects such as abortion, AIDS, nuclear weapons, gun control, etc., are situations that have been looked at before, but were never as ma- jor a threat as now. Elaine Arballo. a junior, comments, Debates are inter- esting. You get different viewpoints from different people on the same sub- ject. 32 Social Science Academics i if ' 4 1 1.3 l. The spirit of Rodeo has really increased in past few years because of the members of Rodeo Club working together and trying their hardest to make it to the State Finals in Quincy, Ca. Members Alex Naccarato and George Ford are two who made it to State and tried their hardest to make it to National Finals. Neither succeeded, but their enthusiasm stayed with them. Next year we'll show them what District ii4 can really do, said George Ford. Members of San Benito High School Rodeo Club belong to District 414 of California High School Rodeo Association. Rodeo is a part of a cowboy's life. lt is also America's number one sport, said Alex Nac- carato. To be involved takes dedication, time and hard work. During a rodeo, contestants compete in a multitude of events. There are barrels to cor- ner, goats to tie, wild broncs, ornery bulls to ride, steers to wrestle, and calves to rope. Sophomore Tod Silva ranked num- ber one in calf roping in District 114. He has proven that he deserves first place in calf roping. !!Calf roping is a lot of fun. I have done it for awhile now, and l plan to proceed with it in the coming years, replied Silva. SO, PUT ON YOUR COWBOY BOOTS, PICK UP YOUR HEELS AND COME WATCH THE SAN BENITO COWBOYS AND COWGIRLS DO THEIR STUFF!!! 66 Rodeo Clubs l. ' Qs Varsity Quest for Championship 2 The Quest began on a cold August morning. It was the first day of Baler camp. Spirits were high off last years C.C.S. championship and practices went great. The team went into the Annual M.T.A.L. Jamboree with high hopes and went home a winner for the first time in three years. Although the Balers looked strong in the season opener, they fell to Live Oak 27 to l2 and to Gilroy 50 to 28 in their first two games. The Balers regrouped with a tie to Los Banos and a 48 to O thrashing of the Alisal Trojans. But the Balers faced another frustrating loss to powerful King City. However, the Balers bounced back once again with a strong win over Carmel, this gave them an agonizing 2-3-l season record. That left the Balers wondering if they were really a good team. The Balers faced an important game against undefeated R.L.S. without injured senior tailback, Eric Snyder. The Balers came into the game with an inspired and aggressive attitude. After an exhilarating pre-game talk about goals by senior Dave Willette, the Balers re- sponded with an overwhelming 24 to 6 win. This gave the Balers new life. The Balers went into their Homecoming 88 Varsity Football Sports to l2 victory. The game was highlighted by the All Leag connections of Ward to McAbee. The Balers running wards a spot in the playoffs had a three game winni streak. The team arrived ata cold windy Gonzales Sparti stadium and clenched tis second play-off birth with a 23 7 win over the hungry Spartans. This also gave the Balers chance for an M.T.A.L. championship. Since they are playing some of the toughest teams around they've had to practice even harder. The varsity's strong points this year are their pitchers which include Robin Rodriguez, John McAbee, and Ra- fael DeLaCruz. Overall Coach Johnson feels that they have good solid backups and subs. Plus, over l 50 new stu- dents are expected every year for about the next eight years to en- roll at SBJUHS. Some students liked the idea of more new people because they want Hollister to be- come a bigger and better known city. Other students didn't like the idea because they like Hollister the way it is and they think a popula- tion increase will make too many changes in the town - which they don't want. Even this year, stu- dents noticed some changes. About 2l new teachers were hired to educate the increased student body. Also, some new classrooms were added and additional lockers were installed. 237 Acknowledgements Mrs. Wright and Don Smith were the two people who gave me the most help and understanding. I owe them alot and would like to thank them with all my heart. Especially to Mrs. Wright, who was more of a friend than a teacher. I would like to thank all the students who put forth their best efforts in the Yearbook class: especially Sue Ravizza who will never want to type again and Stina Low for calm- ing me during my many nervous break-downs. Also to Mark Mooney and Chris Jennings for their help on deadline and for making me laugh constantly. Thanks to Mike Gon- zalez and Shannon Nolan, my best team, who didn't let their love life interfere with their work and to Stacy Perrin imy creative genius? and Mary Avila for being top-notch Tenny Gardiner, Dori's Photography, Western Photogra phy, Sam Walsingham, and The Free Lance gave us profes sional help whenever we needed it, thank you. Also to Gi for cleaning up a room that looked like a hurricane hit i and to Corky for installing all our modern conveniences I also appreciate all the Yearbook iokes like the rubbe cement boogers thrown in my hair. Thanks to Dave De Maggio who was not in Yearbook but came in on our las deadline and helped out anyway. And last but definitely not least, thanks to Stephani Brengman and Vince Garcia . . . good luck next year a editor-in-chief and photo editor, you'll love it. photographers. Teachers turned Wrestlers entertained a packed crowd of students who gathered in the gym to watch the comic antics of the likes of Amazon Red, the Doctor of Destruction and Madam Mary, the Pinnacle of punish- ment. Other activities provided by the Positive School Climate Committee included a band in the patio area and presentation of the film, Rebel Without A Cause. 0000000000000000000000000000000000 00000000000 D,AUT0GRAPHS 921304 'cw ,fab SWE any Q7kPZ,Q 2 PY f ' O AW 63? 6 WWF?
