A Year In Sports Sports, as well as many other programs at H.H.S., underwent quite a few changes this year. Participation fees were only one issue. Despite the increase in fees, involvement and interest skyrocketed. Thanks to the efforts of: Lisa Baumgartner, Mike Parker, Steve Gularte, Wayne Purves, Anne McCullough, Trisha Rey, David Wright, James Martinez, Robert HCheetah Gonzales, Mike Harn, Francine Reinosa and Kristy Spina, 1984 was a fantastic YEAR IN SPORTS at Hollister High. This means that the class of 1985 will have to work that much harder to be as outstanding as the class of '84. Good luck!! 1. The agony of DE-FEET! 2. Varsity Ties For Second The 1983 Varsity football team had a tremendous season this year. They finished second along with four other teams. For awhile the Balers were in a four-way tie for first place, but on their last home game of the season on a very muddy field, they lost to Palma. The loe dropped them from the championship bracket. Head coach Carrie Laine said, The significance of this year's team was that they were dedicated and played more like a team. This is the best season the team has had under the realms of Coach Laine. All MTAL player Gregg Serrano stated, I feel the reason we did so much better than the year's before is because we knew what we wanted, and we tried our very hardest to get it. This year's varsity has a lot to be proud of as they fought hard and worked long hours on and off the field. 1. Linebackers Ron Gong and Ken O'Connell made it tough on all running backs. 2. Takes Second in League This year has been a very productive one for the Junior Varsity football team. Stamina and hard work has led this young team to a winning season, ending the year with an overall record of 7-3. When freshman Kip Ward, starting quarterback, was asked what he thought made the team so strong, he replied, I feel that team effort and timing was the big difference. Coaches Dario Casarino and Alfonso Hurtado were quite pleased with the successful season and will be looking forward to the upcoming freshmen from last year's squad. This year's Volleyball team struck it rich again. The Balers managed to lose only one of their twelve league games and posted a 15-3 overall record. An explosive group of girls, that were close and played like a family, stated head coach Dale Morejohn. Donna Hodges, three year all League M.T.A.L. Varsity player, and first year varsity player Anne Tayler both agree that was a major reason for the excellent season. Coach Morejohn is making a habit in winning, taking his team to the Championship his first two years of coaching volleyball. This year's team went a little bit further than last year's team, winning the first playoff game in C.C.S. against North Salinas. Donna Hodges stated Last year they whipped R.L.S. Coach Coombes has consistently had either first or second place finishes during his tenure as coach. This year was no different. The Baler team worked and ran hard only to finish second to an up and coming Palma team. Palma took the league title by only 8 points. The Balers have a host of excellent runners. Led by senior Robert Cheetah Gonzales the Balers will be a dominant force to contend with in the future. This is because of returning lettermen junior Fritz Ureno, Steve Vallejo, and Fabian Gaona. The Balers who received the outstanding awards were Robert Gonzales, Most Valuable Player, and Gregg Coombes, Most Improved Player. Cheetah Gonzales was also the team Captain. 4. The swimming team finished the season with a 3-5 record. According to Coach Dottie Rose, Our team didn't perform as well as expected due to an unfortunate amount of swimmer's illnesses. When the squad had a full, healthy team they performed quite well. Senior Francine Reinosa said, The team isn't doing as well as last year. We just didnlt seem together as a team. Even though the team had a losing season, Francine Reinosa was one of the bright spots. She was the lone CCS qualifier by having one of the best times in the area in the 200 and 100 freestyle races. Divers Shannon Hansen and Stacey Mendez paced the Balers in competition throughout the season. Other outstanding performers were Michelle Miller, Cathy Coombes, and Heather Parker. Some questionable refereeing in some games almost brought the players together in a fight. But Coach Robledo removed his players from the game before any altercations occurred. Leading the Balers throughout the season were George Sanchez, M. V. P.g Felipe Ornelas, Most Inspirationalg Manuel Bueno, Most Improved, and Ray Garfey, All-MTAL. The Chieftains were able to place more men in the finals, thus capturing the coveted crown. The Balers again had some of the best wrestlers in the lower weights in the Central Coast Section. Marcos Labuguen, 98 lb., finished lst in the MTAL, had the most takedowns, and was selected the Most Improved wrestler. Guillermo Maldonado, 119 lbs., was lst. in the MTAL for the second year running, had the most pins, and was selected Co-MVP. James Martinez, 145 lbs., was 1st in the MTAL, and Co-MVP. 3. As they did last year, they went undefeated in league play only to lose out in the MTAL Finals this year hosted by San Benito High School. According to Coach Marti Dillon, We will be even stronger next year. We are losing three seniors, but we should have enough throughout the line-up to take a run for the championship next year. It is a bit frustrating going undefeated two years in a row and not having an undisputed championship yet. Coach Dillon has built a formidable unit of wrestlers at the high school level and with the help of the Hollister Recreation Dept. he helped start a junior wrestling club that will show rewards within a couple years. 36 5 1. It took the team five games, before they had a win. The average height of the team is 5' 9 , which is rather short. The starting line-up for the Balers for the majority of the year was Mike Parker, Ken O'Connell, Bill Hernandez, David Huaracha, and Lindsay Ross. O'Con- nell, and Hernandez are co-captains. Defensively, the team is strong, but as we all know, you can't base a team on defense only. Unfortunately, the of- fense just couldn't seem to get it together. According to Mike Parker, The season progressed rather slowly, and it was very upsetting. Coach Becerra is attempting to build a strong offense as well as defense for next year. This year Coach Al Hurtado put together another fine looking aggressive basketball team that often times played inspiring basketball. Led by Freshmen ball player Kip Ward, and Sophomore center Salome Ponce, the Hayseeds put together a 8-8 league record. This combined with their preseason record of 4-3 gave them an overall 12-7 record. According to Coach Hurtado the most emotional game of the year was the one against Carmel when the Hayseeds were down by 18 points at half-time, and came back to defeat them 63-58. Coach Hurtado said, The guys really proved tonight what they could do when adversity was at its strongest. Being down by so many points often times lets a team give up. Not our guys! They came back in the second half with a conviction not to give-up. 1. Freshman Kip Ward shoots for a point, while Charles Snyder goes for a rebound. 2. Under a new playoff format this year, the team was able to go to the Regions. Unfortunately a loss to powerhouse King City brought the end to a 10-13 season. The Balers were led by Seniors Collette Solorio, Renee Renteria, and All-MTAL selections Lisa Baumgartner and Donna Hodges. Fast breaking and a strong defense were they calling cards for the success of the team this year. Unfortunately periods of cold shooting kept the Balers from taking the title, but with a strong FfS team and the return. of some of the juniors and sophomores the Balers could be contenders again next year. Senior Donna Hodges, already a unanimous all-league selection in Volleyball, was recognized by the MTAL coaches as the Most Valuable Player in the league. Donna was also averaging 16.6 points per game placing her amongst the scoring leaders in the Central Coast Section. 1. The returning members are seniors Linda Keene, Trisha Rey, Junior Bev Whipple, and Sophomores Davina Polanco and Tammy Silva. All-league players Krystal Martin, Tammy Rose, and Honorable Mention player Yvonne Pelaiz will be sorely missed when the Baler girls take the diamond. Taking their places are Freshman Stacey Stadtler, Sophomores Anne Taylor and Yolanda Jimenez. The Balers should again be quite strong defensively, but pitching could be suspect. Pitching for the Balers this year will be Anne Taylor and Bev Whipple. Shoring-up the infield will be Tammy Silva f3Bl, Stacey Stadtler KSSJ, Trisha Rey f2Bl, and Bev Whipple f1Bl. A few changes this year brings a new coach, Mr. Bill Johnson. A very young team will be representing the froshfsoph contingent. Some of the outstanding players for this team are: shortstop Rudy Reys, pitcher and firstbaseman John Mcabee, and thirdbaseman Sam Lomanto. The team got off to a slow preseason, but is now 2-2 in league play. The squad should again be fighting for the title if the players have some clutch hitting and pitching. According to coach Johnson, One of the biggest concerns I have for this year's squad is having the guys learn the fundamentals of the game. Fine Arts - A Form Of Self ' Expression The Fine Arts Department is one where students can learn how to make many different creative things. Crafts, ceramics, paintings, and jewelry are just a few of the Fine Arts classes. Most students take these classes for two reasons: First, they are fun, and second, they're easily passed. The disorganized yearbook class under the supervision of Mr. Dale Morejohn put together the 1984 edition of El Chapitel. After being struck with the almost welcome Senioritis, homework is usually forgotten about. If not, then some swarm into the library, by 7:55 a.m. to get a seat. For this reason, the library has rapidly become an over-populated Senior sanctuary. Hopefully, next years Seniors won't be struck as badly with the dreaded but welcome disease! 142 'trys a- -at 1.
