Future draftsmen work on projects which point the way to a bright future. Under the guidance of Mr. McComb, these boys learn all the concepts of engineering. The more advanced students work on projects for private engineers or on Tech's own needs. With a library of 200 books to help them, these draftsmen have knowledge at their fingertips. 106 Apprentice draftsmen Don Mendez, Joe Villegas, Robert Maldonado, Edmundo Sierra, Salvador Zumaran, Joe Galvan, and Jimmy Rodriguez, work on their semester projects. Tech draftsmen work on their drawings which include anything from machine parts to elementary architectural plans. D.E. Students Become Tomorrow’s Leaders Destined to be tomorrow's leaders in the bus ine s s world, Tech's D. E. students earn and learn at the same time. The D.E. student not only receives knowledge necessary for his job but also receives a definite salary. D.E, instructor, Mr. Dilts, gives his students some pinpoint advice on how to succeed in their jobs . A D.E. part-timer learns all the tricks of a trade and his regular high school curriculum at the same time. He learns the art of serving others cheerfully and efficiently. After graduation, the student receives fulltime employment and starts earning a higher salary. Part-time worker Rachel Salazar sells some cosmetics to a satisfied customer. D. E. students listen attentively to Jesse Rubio, who gives a report on his job. 107 A skirt must have the right hem and Toni Ramos applies her skill to a student's dress. Tech Stylists Plan Throughout the year the girls in Garment Manufacturing are busy making uniforms for the various organizations-shop aprons for our schools and dresses, gowns, and dusters for the Red Cross. These girls not only receive training in the technicalities connected with their work but, under the direction of Mrs. Rose 11, their instructor, they learn to put their training to most effective use. 108 While Carmen Perez works on a Red Jacket dress, Margarita Flores and Margaret Luna give careful attention to a bathrobe . The Bexar County Home for Girls will profit by the work of Tech's Garment Manufacturing Department as Margie Freire, Helen Fuller, and Delia Vigil make bathrobes. Own Wardrobes These stylists take time out from their assigned duties to plan their own wardrobes. They look forward to making their Easter dresses for the Easter parade. At Christmas the girls make their own Christmas dresses and Christmas gifts. By graduation, these seamstresses have acquired enough skill and experience to design and make their own for-mals, some of which are outstandingly beautiful. Seamstress Benita Bustos sews a hem on a skirt. Other San Antonio schools profit by the Tech Garment Manfacturing Shop, as Gloria Morales and Diana Valdez embroider aprons for Brackenridge High School students. Seamstresses Nora Salinas and Eleanor Tobias work on choir robes for Garner Jr. School. 109 Tech Carpenters Bang! Pow! Bang! Buzz! These are just some of the sounds to be heard in the Cabinet Mill Shop, where apprentice carpenters are busy all year round keeping Tech's chairs, desks, and tables in tip-top condition. Atape recorder gets finishing touches from Joe Vas-quez, Ponciano Garcia, and Raul Morales. These boys not only build flats for the Tech Little Theatre, but make tables and card holders for the Red Cross. During a term of thumb smashing, students work on faculty projects and projects for other high schools. Cabinet Mill students Pete Maldonado, George Vidaurri, Alfonso Ortiz, and Andrew Johnson find installing cabinet doors an easy job. Since salvaged material from old desks is used for other projects during the year, Louis Castanon, Alfonso Ortiz, and Joe Rodriguez dismantle a desk. Hammer Away With the aid of a thickness planer, Gilbert Vidaurri, Domingo Vargas, Richard McElroy, Jesse Avila, and Raymond Nerio plane lumber parts. Apprentices Jesse Monreal, Gilbert Vidaurri, Carlos Monreal, and Joe Melendez add the finishing touches to a Bar-B-Que table for a teacher. An easy task for Rudy Montalbo and Jesse Avila is beltsanding for the finishing room. The wood lathe machine comes in handy when it comes to turning screw driver handles. George Gillett, George Wilson, and Albert Tucker demonstrate. Tech Radio Shop Builds Stay tuned to Tech's Radio Shop for the best in Tech. You'll hear wonders in a world of sounds. To be able to put a radio together is one of the main objectives of Radio Shop students. Tony Peche, Gilbert Lopez, Felipe Ruiz, and Hewitt Phillips finish their project. Amplifiers are a great help for the Tech speech classes. Polo Inclan, Bill Funari, and John Huff test an amplifier. Juan Hernandez find installing radio parts a very easy job. These radio experts are geniuses with high fidelity and stereophonic amplifiers. As far as radios are concerned, they know how to take one apart and put it back together with all the tubes in the right places. A World of Sound Most of their projects consist of working on TRF amplifiers, televisions, phonographs, and tuners. These projects, of course, are carried on after the daily one-hour lecture given by Mr. Jett on theory. All the tools which are used for repairing radios must be sharp. Leroy Arispe, Ray Gonzales, and Johnny Ovalles sharpen the shop tools. Toolroom foreman Jesse Martinez checks out soldering iron to Tony Montes while George Gonzales awaits his turn. Radio Shop students Larry Hortick,H i 1 a r i o Gutierrez, Tony Campos, and Graviel Delgado work on their own radios. Our future T. V. doctors and radio specialists are now in training preparing for all future cases. What would any family do without them ? Want to Buy a Chicken Coop? Spot welding is a breeze for expert welders Robert Juarez, Angel Rodriguez, Rudy Lerma, and Rene Gamboa. Want to buy a chicken coop ? They're available aplenty at the Welding Shop. Items such as Bar-B-Q pits, clothes line poles , and bike racks are also made by the shop boys for either school or customer use. Welding Shop is one of the best equipped on the Tech campus. One of the most modern in the city, it's easy to see why a large number of Techites are enrolled. Assistant foreman Joe Silva and foremanJoe Longoria figure out the amount of material it takes to construct a lawn edger. The front-cross member of a 53 Oldsmobile receives a face-lifting from Fidencio Sanchez and Ernest Lavine. 114 They’re Available Aplenty! W elding shop students practice welding techniques. The San Antonio area is sprinkled with graduates of this shop. Gas welding, braizing, flame cutting, and hardening now come easily to our graduates. Looking for a job? Just tell your future e m p 1 o y e r you're from Tech Welding, and you've got it made! Welders Joe Silva and Joe Longoria examine the latest type welding machine . To build a blocking sled is mere routine for expert welders Henry Ramos and Henry Flores. - 115 Boys Make Meet the boys behind the headlines. The Tech printers produce a newspaper twice a month. These boys know from the start that the printing trade requires hard work and concentration. These students have approximately 450 jobs to print per year--the TECHNICIAN, tickets for various club activities, and class schedules needed for registration. The front page is one of the most interesting parts of a newspaper. Doing their share for the TECHNICIAN are Roger Botello, Abelardo Oviedo, and Paul Hernandez. Before the TECHNICIAN can be printed, t h e copy first must be set. Working the linotype, David Mendoza shows Jaime Enriquez and Gilbet Rendon how the job is done. Various jobs are put out by the print shop all year. Albert Arrington, Oscar Moran, Arthur Galindo finish their job ticket for the Student Council. The Headlines Taking trips to the local newspaper plants and presenting the outstanding student printers with the annual Texas Type Foundry Award are the highlights of the year. The grueling hours spent in learning all the fundamentals of printing pay off in the end. Outstanding students can expect to find well paid jobs as soon as they graduate. This is reward in itself. First semester printing students take the hand-composition speed tests to familiarize themselves with type setting. The Miehle-Vertical is partly responsible for the printing of the TECHNICIAN. Ralph Cortinas and Albert Lorenzi put out the last copies. Teachers often send paper material to be cut at the Print Shop. Ralph Lerma cuts scratch sheets while Edmund Lopez and Norman Toseano operate the Miehle-Vertical. Sparks Fly Radio bugs Mario Ramirez, Armando Hernandez, and John Taylor listen attentively as Mr. Cunningham points out the various parts of an electric motor. The working of a basic amplifier circuit becomes a simple matter when discussed by Mr. Cunningham and two of his students, Francisco Vasquez and Robert Almaraz. Class jots down notes as Mr. Cunningham explains the operation of a circuit. Electric currents fly in Third Building. Our Electric Shop boys are learning, slowly but surely, how to make current jump from one transistor to another and how to build electronics gear. These boys, under the direction of Mr. Cunningham, have the opportunity of learning the basic fundamentals of Electric I and Radio I. He guides them towards the communication business; radio and television. 118 In Electric Shop Projects of these students vary from electronics circuits to actual fabrication. During this construction period these electricians also learn the use of hand and power tools. They do relays and work on D. C. motors plus electrical circuit hook-ups. During the second semester they make and use several different types of power supplies to furnish power for amplifier projects. Electricians Edward Patino, Macario Salas, and Francisco Vasquez carefully construct a relay. Students give careful attention to a demonstration of a high voltage arching. Expert electricians John Taboada and Victor Reygadas repair an automotive radio. 119 Architects Stop Measuring accurately, Rocky Gonzalez works on a floor plan. Members of the Architectural Drafting Department work on their drawings. To the average person, planning a home is a complicated matter, but to the Architectural Drafting students it is a breeze. Skill combined with brains makes concrete the dream of a lovely home. One semester of hard work and careful study produces the quality that enables a student to think originally in the field of architecture. Drafters Arnold Menchaca, Jesse Gongora, Roland Castillo, Rocky Gonzalez and Rudy Soriano listen attentively while Joe Cano explains the difference between the main types of architectural lettering. 120 At Nothing Architectural Drafting Seniors listen to an explanation of the front elevation of a house. Future architect Richard Reyes works on a floorplan for a night club. Architectural students begin to work on the designing of a home in their first semester of school, where they are taught the basic fundamentals. During the latter part of the course these future architects get the opportunity of setting their own ideas down on paper. Converting an Army truck into a wrecker has been only one of the many projects undertaken in Auto Shop this year. This project is a wonderful example of the teamwork common to the shop as a whole. These auto experts not only learn the theory, they actually practice what Mr. Niedorf teaches. Auto Shop apprentices Manuel Dominguez, Arthur Martinez, Bennie Martinez, and Richard Garza learn how to overhaul a motor. Are You Ready Electricians Arnold Garza and Amador Cantu start from scratch in constructing a small electric motor. Electrical wizards Amador Cantu and Roland Arzola work on their term project of building a small electric motor. Interested in electronics as a profession? If so, the place to get a good head start is with Mr. Skloss1 advanced electric shop. Boys entering this course know all the fundamentals and are familiar with the various phases of the electronic theory. Early in the term each student is given a blueprint and instructions on how to build a universal motor. The progressive students work on the more detailed study of armature and motor rewinding. Repairing electrical gadgets is easy work for electricians Ted Amaro, Simon Ancira, Felix Campos, Leonard Castillo, Joe Salazar, Gilbert Cantu, Edward Chapa, and Frank Trevino. Concentration shown by electricians, Joe Ariaga and Manuel de Leon, will result in a carefully built electric motor. Advanced electric students, Richard Tapia, Luis Gonzales, Tommy Martinez, Robert Rocha, and Robert Moses repair and rewind electric motors. The students also do various outside jobs such as fixing telephones, installing motors, fixing electric appliances, and changing switches for fans and lights. Term projects include rewinding electric motors, building hot plates, and soldering irons. The high point in the course comes when the students construct a small electric motor from scratch. Electricians Alfonso Guerrero, Robert Reina, Joe Velasquez, and Frank Lopez construct individual AC-DC motors. Plumbers Maintain Expert pipe threading is a must in Piping Trades. Carlos Chapa and Raymond Montez master this trick of the trade. Thanks to Piping Trades Shop, no Techites will ever be annoyed by a dripping faucet . Here is indeed a nucleus of industry, for within this shop, plans are formed and carried out. The shop members work on new and original projects. Making a complete auto part or an instrument to be used in the shop is a common experience for these energetic machinists. To keep pace with modern industry, some of these amateur machinists undertake such projects as making scientific instruments. One such project this year was the making of a poppet valve, a tool used in connection with hydraulics. Believe it or not, the boys in machine shop still find time to keep up with the nation-wide fad of 1'Go-Karting. They have built two com -plete Go-Karts. What a satisfaction when the boys see their own home-made car in operation. Machinist Joe Fuentes grinds a V block. Machine Shop Boys Foreman Joe Mireles makes a spindle for a farm tractor. Metalists Cameron Armstrong and James Forrestier work on parts of a smoke stack for a bar B-Q pit. Opportunities in Sheet Metal are unlimited for students eager to learn. This course offers boys the opportunity to use their constructive abilities. It helps them to form the habit of planning to meet their own needs. Students at first make simple projects of metals and perform simple tool machine operations of soldering, seaming, riveting, and acetyline welding. As they advance, they perform more difficult jobs which will later be required in industry. Sheet Metalists Meet Orill press gets new paint netahst, Paul Palacios. °m shee Needs for Industry While Henry Gonzalez, Rudolfo Lopez, and Ray Carreon watch the process, Juan Pena and Rudy Rodriguez construct a stove pipe. Every year this shop takes in a large number of inexperienced students who graduate as top-notch sheet metalists. They make gutters for homes, ink funnels for the print shop, dust pans for the janitors and tables for the mimeograph machine. Thanks to the sheet metalists our campus is one of the cleanest in San Antonio. The boys supplied us with trash receptacles and did blowpipe work for the dust collection system. Skilled metalist, Rudy Rodriguez, makes use of cornice brake machine to s ape sheet of metal. Trash cans made by students Pablo Lomas, Henry Gonzalez, Ray Carreon, and Rudolfo Lopez will be of use on Tech's campus. Future business women take speed tests to improve their typing abilities. Tech Students Train There is nothing like a good invention to make life easier. Know what has made life easier for all businessmen and women? The typewriter! This small, worthwhile machine has typed up millions of letters, themes, and business material. But what is the use of having a machine when it cannot be used? Here Tech's Commercial Department comes in. Girls entering Tech usually take this as their major course. Learning how to use the typewriter, they gain the experience necessary to become secretaries. Office practice students Mary Ramirez, Carmen Palomera, Eloise Tafolla, and Cruz Hernandez take dictation from a dictaphone. Typists Irma Reyes, Mary Acosta, Yolanda Aguillon and Mary Ramirez furnish the finishing touches to Shakespearean Club booklets. i 2 1 1 B S'-iWMBgv 136 For Business World Besides the use of the typewriter, the commercial department trains girls to use the mimeograph machine, the ditto machine, bank posting machine, and the electric calculating machine. President Tony Mireles gives a few pointers on the slide rule to Johnny Cervantes and Mario Rendon. Slide Rulers Did you know that mathematics is the basis of all science and matter? Well, it is and for this reason the Slide Rule Club was formed. Under the instruction of Mr. J. Cunningham, eager students finally learn to master the Slide Rule by solving intricate and complex problems with the use of basic essentials — addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, and determination! Comparing answers is one way to make sure you're right, agree Arthur T. Diaz, Robert Ayala, and Joe Rodriguez. Texas-size slide rule is read by members Jesse Torres, Jesse Calvillo, and Irene Alvarado. 166 Solve Problems Although the main objective of the members is to learn the operations of the slide rule, social activities are also included. Last Christmas, they had a wonderful Christmas party, and this last month, they had their annual end-of-the-year party paid for by a tamale sale. The Slide Rule is the lazy man's short cut to complex math problems. Slide rulers wish it could solve life's problems. Mathematicians Pete Rodriguez, Tommy Martinez, and Tino Sanchez agree that it is much easier to solve problems on a slide rule. 167 Club member Tony Garcia seems amazed at the amount of money Mr. Cunningham and Richard Reyes find in the club treasury. Members Victor Soto and Charles Amaya give Armando Hern; dez a few tips on the use of the slide rule. Long-time member of the club, Gloria Arias, explains the meaning of the Y-Teen to Antonia Martinez, Mary Rose Figueroa, Margaret Sanchez, Rosalinda Olguin, and Mary Ann Puente. Y-Teens Help Although the Y-Teen Club is overflowing with members, Mrs. Gonzalez, Y-Teen sponsor, is doing a great job of managing the actions of the organization. The countless projects of the club are all for the benefit of those in need. These helpful projects--making Christmas stockings for orphans , working voluntarily at the Children's Shelter, money-making projects for the needy--do not interfere with the girls' social activities. Program chairman Carmen Mc-Cumber gives committee members Lina Garibaldi, Darlene Dersch, Gloria Ortiz, and Beatrice Ortiz a rundown of coming events. 168 Officers Sylvia Acuna, Gloria Arias, Mary Carmen Valdez, Frances Tamez, Cruz Hernandez, Virginia Charo listen as Gloria Peche tells Oralia De La Garza she has been chosen to represent the Tech Y-Teens at the Snowball Dance at the YWCA. Using their many skills, these boys entered some of their own work at the State Convention, which awarded Tech's electricians several blue ribbons. The experience they gain from this work becomes the knowledge they use in constructing their own electrical devices. Member Tommy Martinez shows state awards won by Electric VIC to Frank Trevino, Gilbert Cantu, Gordon Zambrano, and Robert Rocha. Club Officers Edward Chapa, Robert Gonzalez, Johnny Cervantes, Tony Garcia, and Ted Amaro receive instructions from Mr. Skloss, club sponsor. 171 Tech’s Cub Draftsmen Buildings, buildings, and more buildings--that's the topic under discussion in the Architectural Drafting Club. All buildings that are constructed are made possible because of one class of worker, the architectural draftsman. Tech's cub draftsmen receive expert advice and ideas from guest speakers who have already made drafting their career. Old-timers Raymond Quiroz, John Trujillo, and Manuel Hernandez along with Mr. Alsup explain club rules to visitors Roy De La Garza, Carlos Gutierrez, Roy Robledo, and Tim Palomera. Rushing to get to the meeting on time, Rocky Gonzalez, Arnold Pena, Robert Herrera, Roland Castillo, and Albert Trevino make it as the bell rings. Members Ralph Ledesma, Frank Aguilar, Ike Mendoza, Jr,, Joe Cano, and Jesse Gongora recall the tasty tamales of their last sale. Ask Expert Advice Drafting Club is not all work and no play. The students make an over-night trip to Garner State Park. They have picnics at Olmos Park. They celebrate Halloween and Christmas with parties. Whenever the Architectural Drafting Club needs funds, there is always a way to get them--they just hold a tamale sale or a cake sale. Officers Richard Coronado, Ramiro Garcia, Hector Trinidad, Richard Reyes, John Salas, and Roger Conat-ser make plans for revision of club constitution. Hair-Stylists Practice Know How To those students who want to gainmore know how and skill, the Cosote VIC offers membership. At meetings, professional experts talk to the members about hair tinting and hair styling. Cosmetician Teresa Gomez shows Cosote members the winning scrapbook at the convention. Girls who pass speed tests on manicuring, hair setting, and hair styling are entitled to go to the state convention to compete with other VIC members. To raise money for the big social event of the year-the Mother and Daughter Banquet-these girls bake cakes and pies to sell to Techites. Officers Ann Sanchez, Natalia Torres, Sulema Puga, Yolanda T r e v i n o , and Carrie De La Rosa are presented to the club membership. The Mules returned two of its opposition's punts for touchdowns. In line play, the Buffs showed up well, but they displayed a poor offense. With a 16 yard gallop for a touchdown, Carlos Chapa, Tech's halfback, placed the Buffs within one point of an early 7 point lead held by Kingsville. Fullback Marco Garcia plunged for the go-ahead points following Chapa's touchdown. When the Buffs returned after halftime, they had lost the services of end Cameron Armstrong and tackle Edward Jimenez through injuries. A stampeding herd of Tech Buffaloes raided the wigwams of the Indians of Harlandale with the decisive score of 8 to 6. Showing a tremendous drive, the Buffs gained a victory that could be credited to the outstanding performance of the defensive unit. The winning score came when Q B James Albert pinpointed his big fullback, Marco Garcia, for a six pointer with a 30 yard pass. Halfback Carlos Orozco plunged off-tackle for the winning two points. Adding to the suspense and excitement. Tech halted a Harlandale drive on the two-yard line to end the game. BROWNSVILLE The razzle dazzle play of the Eagles of Brownsville proved too much for the Tech Buffaloes as they were beaten 27 to 0. Marco Garcia, Tech’s fullback, gained 130 yards to initiate a small spark in the Buff's offense. Preparing for district play is becoming more of a problem for Tech Coach, Mr. Warren Wyble, with the increasing injuries. Hard-driving fullback Marco Garcia needed yardage. LANIER A caravan of Lanier fans entered Alamo Stadium on their Color Day expecting to see their arch rivals, the Tech Buffs, beaten. For a while it seemed that the Vok fans would be satisfied, for in the last quarter Lanier was protecting a 12 to 0 lead. Coming from behind, Tech fullback Marco Garcia, scored twice with James Forestier kicking the game-winning extra point. Lanier again added to the game's excitement by marching all the way to Tech's two yard line. BURBANK The scrappy Tech Buffaloes gave the 16-AAAA Champions their closest district battle, but lost 13 to 8 for their first district setback. Burbank's bulky defensive line held the Tech offensive efforts until the final minutes of play. Here second-string quarterback, Jerry Gomez, threw two perfect pitches to end Robert Navarijo and fullback, Marco Garcia, the latter scoring a touchdown. Penalized fifteen yards, Gomez again elected to pass, this time hitting end Charles Brown for an extra two points. Power-house Garcia lurches forward as Jerry Gomez and Carlos Orozco clear the way. EDGEWOOD The Edgewood Raiders upended the Tech Buffaloes by the score of 7 to 0. Tech came within inches of pulling this game out of the fire. Early in the second quarter, Tech's fullback, Marco Garcia, plunged past Edgewood's goal line only to be called back because of a rule infraction. With two minutes left to play in the game, halfback Carlos Orozco encouraged Tech's hopes when he returned an Edgewood punt to the opposition's 26 yard line. BRACK A disease of fumble-itis hit the Tech backfield as they fumbled away a 2 to 0 halftime lead to the Brackenridge Eagles. Converting two of Tech's fumbles into T.D.'s, the Eagles galloped their way to a 12 to 2 victory. An eager Buffalo, Edward Jimenez, accounted for all Tech's points when he rushed a Brack punter behind his own goal-line. LAREDO Displaying their best offensive effort, the Buffaloes came from behind to nip the Laredo Tigers 21 to 14. Laredo led at halftime 7 to 0, but Tech returned with scoring jaunts by halfback Carlos Orozco and Fernando Fernandez. Orozco scored the first, exchanging the lead with the Tigers. Making the score 14 to 7 in Tech's favor, Fernandez followed with his six pointer. Laredo tied the score, but Carlos Orozco scored his second touchdown providing the winning points. As Willie Muniz and Elias Rocha lead interference, halfback Carlos Orozco slips past a Lanier tackier. ALICE The Alice Coyotes, who have never tasted defeat while encountering the Tech Buffs, again turned the t r i c k this year by a score of 21 to 0. The scrappy Buffs, however, stood gallantly against the District 16-AAAA co-champions. Tech's of f e n s e almost broke the scoring column against the rugged defense of the Coyotes late in the last quarter. Spirited by the running of halfbacks Fernando Fernandez and Carlos Orozco, Tech drove 72 yards, but failed to convert the last yard for a touchdown. Tech finished district play in fourth place with a record of two wins and four losses. Hustler Carlos Chapa stiff-arms would-be tackier. Hard driving fullback Marco Garcia heads for safety.
