Van Gogh, Picasso, and Diego - these are some of the famous artists whose work is studied by art students under the guidance of Mrs. Free. These young people not only study theory, they also draw paintings which are sent to the Witte Museum for the International SchoolArtProject of Life in America. These drawings are of people at work, at play, at school or at worship. The best canvases are exhibited around the world. Future artists develop their talents. Art classes participate in the annual Festival of Music and Art at the Municipal Auditorium. In addition, they decorate our school windows for Christmas, collect examples of fine paintings, report on art books, make term reports on famous artists, and learn how to do paper sculpture. Advanced students work on their drawings while artist repairs the window display. STUDENTS Students operate the calculating machines. Experts Josie Valdez and RichardHernandez operate electric calculators. Operating of proof and bank posting machines takes practice. Experts Nedra Barrera and Carrie Morales put in some time to increase their skill. Tech's Commercial Department functions on business. Tech realizes that every business, regard- less of size, is in need of clerical workers - ranging all the way from typists to executive secretaries. Our school offers a great variety of clerical courses. FOR BUSINESS WORLD Some of them include secretarial, retail selling, general business, and bookkeeping. The only high school in San Antonio to provide such thorough training, Tech prepares its commercial students to meet the demands of the modern industrial world. While other students do their unit work, Miss Kinslow explains lesson to Lupe Campos. Office Practice student Gloria Hernandez runs off a stencil on the mimeograph ma- chine, while Nina Gonzales counts pages to make booklets and Lee Ruiz runs ditto machine. During their library period, Dolores Godoy, Ruth Hernandez, and Carmen DeLuna acquire further experience in office work by arrang- ing a booklet for one of the local P.T.A.'s. Seniors Joe Castillo and Ruben Gonzalez make blow pipes for the Edison dust col- lector System. Metal workers Joe Flores and Manuel De La Cruz work on racks for drawing boards to be used in other shops. To fit a metal door perfectly takes all the skill of F rank Flores and Paul Palacios. 30 IVIETALISTS SUPPLY NEEDS Whether it's aircraft work, body and fender repair, or any other phase of sheet metal work, our Sheet Metal Shop students are ready and well trained to do their job. Under the instruction of Mr. Lindsey, these young men acquire an understanding of metals, of layouts and blueprints. They help supply Tech's extra needs. They make our awnings, water buckets, and trash cans. Expert craftsmanship, desirable work habits, and accurate measurements are a must for the student. ARTISTS AWARDS Tech's Commercial Art Department, one of the most colorful shops in our school, is indispensable in Tech's public relations. All school activities - dances, ball games, plays, and club projects - are in the hands of these talented students. This year Tech's artists, along with the artists from other San Antonio schools, entered paintings in the art contest sponsored by the San Antonio Jptimist Club. First prize went to talented Andrew Qodriguezg honorable mention to Robert Rios, two Jf our top-notch commercial artists. f 1'- Commercial artists J oe Hernandez, Angelo Ca nt u, Joe Villanueva, and Alex Herrera work on pictorials for National Youth Ap- preciation Week put on by the Optimist Club. Designers Josie Perez, Esther Rodriguez, Rosario Pena, Tony Lopez, and J' oe Morales draw fashions. Artists Rosario Pena, Richard Hernandez, and Ronnie Rocha work on Junior Prom poster. 31 Millers Robert Randall and Norman Fuller build a clothes hamper. With the aid of a shaper, Antonio Moralez and Carlos Padilla mold for a storage cabinet. WOODWOHHERS KEEP If it's to be made of wood, it's a job for our Cabinet Mill shop. Under the guiding hand of Mr. Alfred J. Fred- erick, this course offers excellent preliminary train- ing for the ambitious boy who is interested in Cabinet Mill work. Cabinet Mill experts David Con- treras, Louis Castano, andRau1 Moralez work on a storage chest, while Roland Sada, Sam- mie Belton, and Panciano Gar- cia finish a cabinet. TECH IN CONDITION We can thank these young men for keeping our :sks and chairs in top condition. Projects for many rganizations, faculty members and shops are also idertaken, such as flats for the Tech Little Theatre, rawing tables, and tabarets. Dld hand Hector Lopez takes great pride in his belt sand- ing. Morning shop students Ruby Ortiz, ,Toe Rodriguez, Fidel Reyes, Paul lrludspeth, Gregory Hinojosa and Santiago Fernandez work on a sewing table. Apprentices Raymond Ortiz, Roland Lopez, Ruby Guerra, Guillermo Chavez, and Robert Schrader add finishing touches to a dining room buffet. Future Engineers work on their projects. Tech's Engineers are truly stepping into the future. Students in the Engineering Drafting department learn to use mathematics as their basic tool. With this tool as their background, they study such fields as sheet metal, topographical, and perspective drafting. Among other things, these students learn the use of the modern equipment essential to their trade. Chief Draftsman John Berlanga discusses the models of intersections with Robert Garcia and Martin Garza. ENGINEERS STEP INTO FUTURE The more advanced students often work on projects for private engineers or Tech's own needs. Such extra jobs offer the boys a chance to practice their skill as well as opportunities for employment. This department is equipped with its own li- brary, where a wide assortment of mathematics and engineering books may be found. Some students enter their best drawings in local or state competition. NIACHINISTS DO THE IIVIPOSSIBLE Experienced machinist Simon Garces shows Don Billings how to cut down an automobile engine. Tech's Machine Shop offers every boy an opportunity to acquire the skills and knowledge essential to a well- trained machinist. Hard work, patience, and the desire to learn are all important factors in training ayoung man for this trade. Some of the individual jobs of these boys include building a binding machine, making a camera mount, building a lathe for cutting material, and building fish- ing rods. The boys in this shop are capable of fixing any- thing made out of iron. They also manufacture and build equipment of all types. These experts can do the hard jobs today and the impossible jobs tomorrow. The best skilled students may work on individual projects and enter them in state wide competition. Cooperation and accuracy are vital points as demonstrated here by Jesse Lujan and Mike Sanchez in making a lathe. RADIO HAIVIS THANSIVIIT Advanced student Nick Alonzo fixes a radio while Alfonso Arzola aligns an antenna on a T.V. set. Apprentices Leo Salas, Manuel Ruiz, ,Toe Cordova, and Eddie Carrola repair car radios to give the best performance ever. Fixing radios is just one of the many things done by experts Larr Hortick, Felipe Ruiz, Gilbert Lopez and Alejandro Gonzales. Tech leads the city in supplying thoroughly-trained young men for the radio field. These young men learn their chosen trade by studying the theory of radio and putting it into practice. 36 . Tech not only trains girls in their chosen vocation but also prepares them for their job as housekeepers in the years to come. After these girls know how to use their tools, they learn how to choose colors that look most becoming on them. They also undertake the project of making some wearing apparel from a pattern. Besides learning the 3 R's, the girls in our cooking classes acquire the know how of true homemakers. They make use of helpful hints in the educational films shown every week. Labs give them a chance to test their cooking skills. Washing and drying dishes, mixing and baking are just a few of the duties performed by these future housewives, who find these homemaking classes both beneficial and profitable to their family and themselves. Under the skillful supervision of Mr. Zettner, these young men learn to maintain the arteries of our buildings. They learn steam fitting, gas piping and refrigeration. Booklets are stapled together, as Gilbert Rendon masters this part of the printing trade. PRINTERS ROLL It's a breeze for George Barrera to operate the Monotabular ruling machine. Learning how to keep the world informed is the goal of the young men in Tech's Print Shop. Under the instruction of Mr. Morley, they have the opportunity of learning composing room techniques, linotype operation, stereotyping and all the other skills necessary to their chosen trade. 44 PRESSES While Armando Elizondo operates the Linotype, ,Tohn Arraguin observes zarefully. GLAIVIOUR CGNIES TO TECH Tech's Cosmetology Department offers young women the opportunity to develop professional work habits through practical shop training. Money made from patrons is used to buy shop supplies. Students learn hair styles as well as the latest methods of beauty treatments. Besides passing their academic subjects, the girls must have attractive manners, pleasing personalities, good health, and business-like poise. They must pass their sophomore requirements, have 1,000 hours of practice work, a grade average of 80 in theory, and must pass their state examina- tion with an average of at least 75 to receive their license. Well, as the boys in Auto Shop will tell you, it's not as simple as filling the gas tank and changing a tire. They learn to maintain an automobile in good condition, to locate the trouble in a car and to make the necessary repairs or replacements. Most of the work is done with hand tools and consists of dis-assembling automobile parts and then reassembling, filling, and adjusting all parts accurately. After a three-year course, even completely overhauling an engine is a simple task for these mastorminds of the Auto Shop. 49 YOUNG ELECTHICIANS Nothing disturbs the work of these radio enthusiasts. In thebeginning, students learn the trade by practicing on irong ther they advance to more difficult jobs suck as repairing steel furniture and fabricating material to be turned over to the machine shop. 52 TORCHES TECH It is essential that an apprectice know is mathematics, drawing, and science, for e will be required to make working sketches, m read blue prints and to understand all lloy metals. ARCHITECTS BUILD Many of the projects carried on by architectural students are taken from magazines. Here Charlie Garza studies the foundation for a small building. The game was a thriller through three quarters. The first half was scoreless with Tech ahead, one penetration to none. Burbank kicked off to start the second half, and Street took the ball on his own 15, streaked up the middle behind good blocking and broke into the open for an 85 -yard touchdown run, But in the next minute the Bulldogs scored and failed to make the important points after touch- down. Minutes later Street ran over a six-pointer on a six-yard sprint. To ice the cake Sheppard ran three- yards around end for the final six points. The Buff offensive team started clicking in the second half with renewed fire. Tech threatened several times, but penalties or the loss of downs always killed the drives. HARLANDALE The Buffs outran and outplayed the Indians but were on the losing end of the score by 26 to 20. Through out the game the ramming Buffs looked for pay dirty but each time fumbles or mistakes were costly. In the first half Harlandale piled up a com- fortable lead of 20 to 6. They still remembered the three point loss of last year and were out for revenge. After a poor first quarter, Techplayed a rough game, inflicting most of the damage. ALAMO HEIGHTS A four year Tech record fell as a strong Alamo Heights team squeezed by fora much yearned for victory. The Mules drew first blood on the open- ing kickoff by scoring a touchdown. Then the Tech Buffs, caught napping, settled down and tallied just before the first half ended. Late in the fourth quarter the de- termined Mules managed to muster a drive and were rewarded with the final six points of the night. Making their bid as outstanding players for Tech were Richard Palacios, who came in to the game in the second half, Clarence Fielding and Marco Garcia, all of whom play defensive action. BROWNSVILLE Tech, determined to win, arrived in Brownsville on Friday, October 3. The opening kick-off was at eight sharp, with Tech on the receiving end. The Buffs were slow starting and were forced to turn the ball over on downs. Brownsville started on a drive and struck paydirt with their halfback slashing through the final three yards. The halfended with Tech behind by eight points. The second half was a fast one as Tech limbered up and scored twice for fourteen points. The Techmen defeated Edgewood, Brackenridge, and Alice in the first round, losing to them in the second. On the scoring side the Buffs were never far behind. They started the season losing to Burbank by a score of 46 to 35. They won their second game in district play over Edgewood in their own gym, 47 to 37. The score of the second game between the Raiders and Tech was in favor of the Raiders. The Laredo Tigers were too much for the Buffs and won by the scores of 61 to 443and 71 to 48. Right in step with Lanier Vok, Roland Arzola comes in for a lay-up shot. The Bulldogs from Burbank also defeated the Cagers from Tech twice by the scores of 46to 35 and 48 to 46. The Techmen were in winning form and defeated the Alice Coyotes at Alice, 50 to 38. Alice came back to the Alamo City and defeated the Buffs 53 to 40. The Bisons were toppled by the Lanier Voks, their arch-rivals, by the scores of 45 to 39 and 50 to 39. The Brackenridge Eagles defeated the Buffs earlier in the season by the score of '71 to 52, but the Bisons came back to end the basketball Season with an upset over the Eagles and a score of 49 to 39.
