Fling DEDICATION Qur schools are the back- bone of our community. Tech to us is a stepping stone in our development-educational as well as social. Those who have been here before us have per- haps seen, through the years, the growth of Tech from the Old Main Avenue High School to the San Antonio Vocational and Technical School. But to us, Tech, in its twentieth year, is a symbol of unity - a realization of the dream of two men. Because of their truly perceptive vision and incessant effort, coupled with their genuine love for Tech, our school has become a fortress of knowledge and a store- house of truth. lt is with respect and grati- tude that we, The Artisan Staff, dedicate this, The Artisan for l952, to Mr. Louis Fox and Mr. George L. BUBBANK-TECH Although out-weighed and classed as the underdogs, the Tech Buffaloes began their season by holding the Burbank Bulldogs to a 7-7 deadlock game at Alamo Stadium. With a minute and a half left in the third quarter and the ball on the Burbank four- yard line, Coach Wyble sent Baul Medina into the game. Humberto Martinez pitched to him to tie up the game. ALAMO HEIGHTS-TECH After tying the Bulldogs, the Buffs roamed to Alamo Heights to defeat the Mules l5-l4 at the Heights Stadium. The Mules scored the first touchdown a few minutes after the game started. Tech's scoring came in the .cond quarter when Humberto Martinez, behind good blocking, completed a 35 yardsgass to Homer De Hoyos. loe Rodriguez added the extra point. BRACKENRIDGE -TECH Approximately 6,000 fans Watched the Red and White Buffaloes meet the Bracken- ridge Eagles at Alamo Stadium. The energetic Eagles began their march by scoring in the first, second, and third quarters. The Buffs came alive in the second half but lost the ball on downs each time to give the Eagles a 27-0 victory. LANIER-TECH , The Technicians thrilled a crowd of 5,455 fans by holding the Lanier Voks to a score- less game. The boys showed great spirit throughout the game and allowed the Voks but two first downs the entire game. Fred Oviedo finds a hole in the line. Excited Buffs wait their turn. IEFF-TECH High-spirited Buffaloes charged into the Stadium to play their best and roughest game of the entire season. The Red and White herd held the Mustangs to a scoreless first quarter and were trailing 6-7 at the half. fl ln the third quarter, the powerful Mustangs scored another touchdown, but the Buff's high spirits soared. Tackle Armando Montelongo interceptedua pass and galloped 65 yards for another Tech touchdown. Sam Trevino was assisted great blocking and went over for the extra point, bringing the score to a l3-l3 tie. ' ' ln the last quarter, the Mustangs brought out all their power and the weary Buffaloes tried in vain to hold thern. Iefferson took the lead and the victory was theirs. K '.: ' X es HARLIN GEN -TECH After playing one of their most thrilling games with left, the little men from Tech met the Cardinals of Harlingen in freezing weather. Before Tech could warm up and pull themselves together, the Cardinals had added 27 points to their credit in the first quarter. BAY-TECH if The Buffs stunned the powerful Texans of Bay Hifi School with a surprising spread formation. Holding the Texans to a O-U tie at the end of t e first quarter, the weary Buffaloes failed to match the great Bay manpower and the score became 26-U in Bay's favor. AUSTIN -TECH As the season rolled to an end, the Buffs took their most serious beating from the mighty Austin Maroons. The Buffs fought hard, but they failed to reach pay dirt. Austin took charge of the game and was victorious. Although the Techmen were out-weighed, they played the entire game with lasting spirit. LAREDO-TECH To wind up the season, the Tech Buffaloes traveled to Laredo to challenge the Tigers for last place. The Buffs had complete control of the game until late in the third quarter, when a Laredo Tiger intercepted a pass and went over for a touchdown. B FOOTBALL Tech's B Team Billygoats concluded their football season by placing fourth in the Alamo League. Their season ended With three Wins and four losses. First, they undertook the Alamo Heights Mules and lost by a score of 24-6. Burbank Was second and bowed to the Little Bisons, 23-18. Iefferson, Edison, and Brackenridge took the next three games by defeating the Billygoats, l9-l3, 24-U, and l3-6 respectively. The Billygoats came back into play by stomping Lanier 26-6 and edging out Har- landale 13-6. Outstanding players for the season were Ioe gsterveen, Rudolph Pena, Robert San Miguel, Henry Moya, Tony Martinezfqoe Guerrerd, Robert Garcia, and Oscar Contreras, although all of Coach Bob Chambers' boys'p'layed good ball. These boys will be next year's A Team Buffaloes. A BASKETBALL Zip, zip, zip, Went the baskets as the Tech High basketball team Went into one of its most successful seasons. To see the Buffs in action on the court was like watching a valuable time piece at Work, every shot Was like ci masterpiece with Gilbert Diaz, Rene Rivera, Raymon lbarra, Robert Esparza, and all the boys on the team making almost un- believable shots. No part of the floor Was too tough an angle for a Buffalo field goal. Hook shots, back hand shots, coffin corner shots, and half courters were the Buffs' most colorful throws. None of the Tech opponents was too much competition, with the exception of Austin and lefferson, the only teams to defeat the Buffs in the first of play. PAGE 167 The highest honors went to Gilbert Diaz, who, most of the season, led the state in individual scoring. Traveling to Austin to play Ray, Chicken Shack sprained his ankle on the opening jump. This proved to be the fatal blow for him and the whole team, as it handicapped him for the rest of the season. Diaz dropped from tirst to third in the scoring department. However, Albert Lopez, and Rene Rivera kept up the pace which had been set tor them by Diaz. Although losing six games in the last round ot play by close scores, the Butts placed two men on the All-District teams, Gilbert Diaz and Albert Lopez. While Gilbert Diaz came in third in scoring, Albert Lopez was not too far behind as he came in ninth. Raymond lbarra struggling tor the ball. PAGE 168 To start ott the season, which later proved to be the best season ever enjoyed by the Techmen, the Butts met the Laredo Tigers at Alamo Stadium. The game was in the hands ot the Buffaloes trom the opening jump as they grabbed an early lead which was never relinauished to their toes. Gutstanding in this tilt were Gilbert Diaz with his defensive and otlensive chores, Albert Lopez handling the backboards, and the rest ot the team as everybody pitched in to hand Laredo a licking. Next, the Tech Buttaloes met Har- Rene Rivera playing leap frog. landale in a non'conterence tilt at Alamo Stadium, ln this game almost everybody on the team played and gained a little experience. This was just another easy Win tor the strong and coming Butts. The Butts showed that there Was no limit to their Wins as long as they were as strong as they were just then. As they journeyed to Corpus Christi to challenge Miller High, they again showed their spirit and determination to Win. I XGL lhl The next game was the game of the year for the Buffs as leff was also knotted up for first place along with Brack. For Robert and Raymond lbarra, Tech's two star guards, this would be the game for them to sparkle. The game was nip and tuck affair all the way to the last auarter as the game ended in a BU-60 tie. ln the 3-minute overtime the Mustangs outscored the Buffaloes 5 points to 2. That was the end of a game in which the Buffaloes hadn't been beaten but merely outscored. Three days later the Ray Texans from Corpus Robert Esparza tangling with a Mustang. f l Christi tried to invade the Alamo City but were repelled by the Buffaloes who sent them back to their coastal city with a defeat in their bags. The following Friday the Buffaloes journeyed deep into the southern part of Texas to Harlingen. The Cards just couldn't match the Buffs' spirit as the Buffs, who didn't have the aid of their two guards who graduated, proved to be almost as strong as ever.
