THE LI. N. AND YOU These are the times that try men's souls. The summer soldier and the sunshine patriot will, in this crisis, shrink from the service of their country, but he that stands it now, deserves the love and thanks of man and woman. Tyranny, like hell, is not easily con- quered, yet we have this consolation with us, that the harder the conflict, the more glorious the triumph. What we obtain too cheap, we esteem too lightly: it is dearness only that gives every- thing its value. Heaven knows how to put a proper price upon its goods, and it would be strange indeed if so celestial an article as freedom should not be highly rated .... And so, as Thomas Paine described the times of the eighteenth century, today in the twentieth century, the world is still striving for universal peace, relentlessly struggling against a tyranny which is seeking to uproot and destroy the ideals for which man has constantly searched. ln l945 the nations of the world proposed plans for a world organization which would work towards final world-peace. This U. N. organization is inextricably bound with education, since it is directed by these three principles in its activities: full and equal opportunities for education for all, the unrestricted pursuit of objective truth, and the free exchange of ideas and knowl- edge. lt is the universal belief that only through sincere under- standing of our fellow man can peace be obtained. And under- standing can only come through the education of the heart and of the mind. W .... since wars begin in the minds of men, it is in the minds of men that the defenses of peace must be constructed . . Believing that the U.
