iFnr mnrb The Staff meditated for weeks on a theme for the 1938 EL ALAMO. We ivrote our tale out and it fieemed satisfactory; read, it aloud, and it sounded abominable. We revised; lifted bodily paragraphs and transferred tliem; had an idea and felt it vanish; were ecstatic one moment; in despair the next; hesi- tated between the theme of the hero and the poet; between a dig- nified and simple style; finally our adventurous sense roused the idea of the Chaucer background, for to contemplate him puts all in a good luunor and in a mood of kindliness and tolerance toivard the world. We chose this .setting because in the years of our youth, col- lege life is something of a journey, beset with difficulties and enlivened with the deeper lore of learned texV ; and hi many respects it is similar to Chaucer ' s pilgrimage with his nyne and. twenty sondry folk to the tcmb of Thomas d Becket. Some of the quotations in this annual are Chaucer ' s exact phras- ing; others we presumed to change to Chaucer spelling. In years to come, as you peruse this book may a. procession of Junior College 1937- ' 38 memories come pouring out of it as did. Chaucer ' s congenial pilgrims pour into the Tabard Inn.
