Groos, Shely, Russ, Cusi, Dewees, Dittmar. FRONT ROW: G. Halff. Mr. Puts. Woolley. te TO T. BONDURANT Chairman of the Board, Teacher, and Friend We Respectfully and Gratefully Dedicate BLUE BONNET 1966 ‘DEDICATION The Academy has had a very worthy “skipper” at its wheel for forty- five years and somehow with all of the dedicating of annuals this gentleman has been overlooked. Perhaps past editors were waiting for his fiftieth anni- versary as a part of the school, or perhaps they just felt that success should be its own reward. However, even though we may be stealing a page from the 1971 Blue Bonnet, we would like to dedicate this to Colonel Bondurant, and go on record as saying it’s about time. The Colonel has often said that he left Virginia to come to Texas to do mis- sionary work. In truth, a missionary’s job is what he has done. He has minis- tered to the spiritual and physical needs of many thousands of young men and even some parents and has educated in various subjects. While doing this he has maintained a dignity of bearing and a spirit of zeal that have been the very wellspring of his success. Whether you came to do missionary work or just for fun, we’re glad you came; and to you we dedicate Blue Bonnet ’66. IN MEMORIAM RYALL L. WHITE Ryall will long be a part of the Academy heritage for he was truly the epitome of the expression “all boy.”’ Quick to fight for that in which he be- lieved, yet quicker still to admit his faults, Ryall left a mark of happiness on all who knew him. His eagerness of spirit and of youth will be constantly in our minds as we approach the voyage which he is now making. It will be nice to see him again. Alv 0 AON Ve Tear lon 9° THE CHAIRMAN OF THE BOARD Colonel W. T. Bondurant THE CHAIRMAN OF THE BOARD SPEAKS After forty-five years at the old Academy, it behooves me to somehow take note of the lives that the lengthening shadows of almost half of a century must necessarily touch. To have been a part of so much growth and of so many lives is often awesome and occasionally even frightening because it is given to very very few to touch lives this closely in the years of greatest growth and development spiritually and physically. Also, it is not often that one can be a colleague of great men and an instruc- tor of still others who in their youthful fault finding were far from seeing their own greatness, but in whom you could see embodied those early seeds of the man which they would one day become. How often they fought against what they would do and be! Yet how marvelous is justice, destiny, and faith that these indwelling qualities are not to be denied! So often all that I have had has been that same intangible unexplainable feeling that this boy or that one would be only too well worth the time that individual praise, prodding, or paddling would take. The rewards of seeing so many become ministers, lawyers, doctors, bankers, teachers, and generally speaking successes in whatever fields they have entered have now combined to be my own somewhat selfish treasure which indeed makes these forty-five years seem well-spent. This year as I see those of you who comprise the graduating class of the class of 1966, I again share with you the hopes and enthusiasms of the past knowing that you, too, will succeed in fullest measure. if | i t | pil. ColAWA T. THE PRESIDENT OF 8.A.A. i Bondurant, Jr. iy : Pas . ‘ = f e : fp os | ff ‘ AG P ‘ } $ . “4 J , f ° AY 5 f r 4) Lf v f yr (e. THE PRESIDENT’S PAGE For eighty years, the Academy has been a part of the maturing, growing, and developing of the boys of this community, state, and to some degree the nation. The years have seen the Academy grow from a student body of twelve to one of one hundred fifty-five, from one building to four, from a faculty of man and wife to one numbering in the ’teens, from a curriculum of three R’s to one which is marvelously diversified and applicable to a challenging, constantly changing world. Fortunately there are few who wish to rest upon the success of the past here, and many who clamor for those new peaks from which infinite horizons are visible. Because of this and the faith in us exhibited by our patrons (past and future), our students, and our friends, the move to our new campus is no longer a hope but is a reality. We can now reiterate the phrase which was our motto in the beginning, ““‘We must accomplish more” but with the change which offers promise to the future, “We will accomplish more.” The excitement of grown men and young men with a common purpose has sel- dom been more evident than it has here been shown. This is the secret to suc- cess of eighty years—a dauntless Academy spirit. Those who leave now have perhaps a greater feeling of reluctance than any class in sixty years because they feel the tension of a growing excitement which one feels as a great race or contest begins, but in ways that your youth does not give you the opportunity to realize, you have been integrally a part of this success. The high quality of their scholarship, morality, and leadership makes and will continue to make this battalion one of which all may be proud. The junior m embers of this cadet corps may use these officers as an example to follow. 56 MILITARY ’66 OFFICERS Indoctrinating a group of rather green young men is the lot of the group pictured here. Making a well-organized cadet corps is not easily done at caeaauinmerot taking life in an easy fashion. These young men realized quite early the task was one that would require their best, and they willingly gave this to make the battalion an excellent tribute to their leadership. MILITARY ’66 RANKING NON-COMS To be chosen for any position of high rank sets an individual apart by virtue of the responsibility that goes with this honor. These cadets have done a great deal to further the cause of the underdog | and champion ideals of fairness throughout the various phases of their | daily lives both at the academy and away. Should their pattern continue, they have set such standards as few before | them and by these actions foretell a brighter future for the coming cadet corps. MILITARY ’66 NON-COMMISSIONED OFFICERS From the group pictured here will come the officers of next year’s cadet corps. Their ability has been almost constantly being evaluated and many of their officers have already made recommendations for considera- tion in the making of appointments in next year’s battalion. Our battalion like any organization depends largely for its leadership on those who rise from its ranks, and these young men have truly exhibited those attributes so necessary for capable leadership. Comprised of men from the three top grades in the school, this group has been selected for both appearance and ability. ORGANIZATIONS ’66 JUNIOR DRILL TEAM Commanding the junior drill team this year has been Eric Hoffman. He has been assisted by his vice commander Steve Hasam. The guidon bearer has been Kevin Fleming, and the drill team first sergeant has been Sam Steves. These men have done an excellent job in spite of a very limited amount of allotted time. The rains and other inconsistencies have played quite a part in forcing them to give up practices that were most important. Nevertheless we have been proud of their efforts and success. 7I ORGANIZATIONS ’65-’66 The Athletic Club Sponsor: Mr. J. D. It is a tribute to these young men that the school annual is almost wholly subscribed to and paid for by the students and the advertisers. For a junier school this is a most unusual record. Hats off to you all! OUR COACHES We are very proud to have these three men on our coaching staff. These men worked with our teams every af- ternoon to put them in playing shape.
