Be se SS ee The Gnainnan of the Board Speaks Yet another year has now reached its final act and commencement is being practiced for, speeches are nearly ready to be spoken, and always it seems there are so many things that need to be said that have to be left unsaid, so many warnings that each might heed, so many stated hopes that somehow must remain on the tongue’s tip never to be uttered. Somehow, though, with all of the apprehension that so naturally is a part of ene those you have nurtured and cherished step forth to take their place in more manly form and with more measured step than when they came, each young man now takes his place with assurance and with pride, doing far more than he himself was able to admit was possible. The minutes of shoe shining and brass polishing have now become a total that would measure in hours for some and days for those who have been here still longer. The hours of class preparation in homework or recitation have now lengthened into days and months. One need not wonder then at the straightness of body or the head held high when so much has gone into accomplishing this final act that doesn’t signify the end but rather the beginning. For those of us who remain to teach, counsel, and guide those who are to follow, we ask your concern to be focused on your fellow man, your love of country, your devotion to your duty, and your constancy of purpose. Give only that which you know is your best to everything you approach, and we shall know that together we have not failed. PAGE 7

omnes ONT. The President's Page The measure of the success of a school is often found in the support of its alumni. If this is any indication of the job that San Antonio Academy is doing, I feel that we can be justly proud of some vital statistics. Of our student body of one hundred fifty boys, twenty-three are sons of former students, but thirty-seven others are legacies whose grandfathers, uncles, cousins, or brothers went to school here also. The remarks, made in passing that are sometimes said with em- barrassment (because most men are not only embarrassed by praise themselves they are also embarrassed to give it) indicate that there are in addition to our alumni still those who are grateful for an under- standing of their son in a personal way, for the character of those to whom they intrust their sons, for the warmth, the concern, and the earnestness of those that give of themselves to teach, and most of all for the tenets of faith, patriotism, and love of God which seem to encompass it all. The men who teach here are still of a caliber to dislike sham, to be indifferent to salary, and above all to believe in the best of their often none-too-zealous students. These are the men whom I would eulogize for not just instructing in the so-called “book-learning” but instead for the character, spirit, desire, ambition, confidence, ad infinitum, that they have instilled in each of their students. In the Latin words, nulla vestigia retrorsum, translated “no steps backward,” one might well find the underlying philosophy of our school, our faculty, and particularly of our students. Their desire to achieve new goals in all fields will remain constant. PAGE 9 ee eee OF
