Burke Instructor of ivics, History, and Coach e Respectfully Dedicate Blue Bonnet ’64 Dedication This year the student body and especially the eighth grade are proud to dedicate the Blue Bonnet of 1964 to Coach L. R. Burke. Coach Burke came to the Academy in 1955 where he has taught many fine classes and many different subjects, but finally he was fitted into the niche that he has so capably filled, instructor of civics and history. Coach Burke has coached many league champion football and basketball teams, and almost every afternoon he is giving some young athlete advice. But, whenever he does it is always good advice. Friend of the student, faithful member of the faculty, outstanding instructor are just a few of the terms that might be used to describe this man. The San Antonio Academy of Texas annual staff and the eighth grade are proud to dedicate the Blue Bonnet of 1964 to Coach L. R. Burke. In Memoriam JouHNn FirzcerRaALD KENNEDY On November 22, 1963, our President, John F. Kennedy, was assassinated on the streets of Dallas, Texas. With this act of violence, and with the violence that followed, the ideas which John F. Kennedy so supremely embodied suffered a grievous blow. The best way to serve his memory is to redeem and revindicate the values of decency, of rationality, of civility, of honoring those values for which he stood through his life and to which in the end he gave his life. Chairman of the Board PAGE 6 rm Sh Be oe x A Message from the Chairman of the Board There have been ever-changing trends in education since the | earliest days of formal training. When the perapetetic teacher, such : as Socrates, began to teach while walking about instead of being seated in the garden or the atrium of his home, he was viewed with skepticism and hailed as someone to be feared for his was a new way. Today this is still the case since we have changed very little in our ability to accept | change. What was good enough for grandfather should be good enough for his grandson! Lately around the Academy many parents have been hearing about the “new math.” ‘This has caused not a little consternation and some questioning as to whether or not this type of mathematics is going to answer all the needs. It is still too early to be completely definitive in a discussion of the true value of the math in the rather complex vastness of what we b) term “the future.” However, we do know that as long as such a thing as education exists with freedom of choice, it will be the obligation of schools such as the Academy to introduce students to such methods and techniques as tend to be the most advantageous among the changes or trends. Each boy here must have an opportunity to Know what is going on not only in the fields of science, literature, history, geography, etc. . . , but also in the field of education to which he is so closely allied each day. We, as your instructors, and you, as those who have been exposed to all that we can give, face an everchanging world together confident that all have their eyes on those distant horizons but with strong beliefs in the past as well as the future. Bondurant, Jr. The President's Message During the past few months, I have been very concerned over an increasing tendency on the part of all parents to begin to concern themselves with the question, “Isn’t too much being expected and demanded of my child at too early an age?” Fathers and mothers wondered this same thing when the draft age was lowered from 21 to 18. They wondered if children weren't finishing school too early, and they finally added another grade to keep them from attaining college too soon. Always questions arise and those who would seek the hardest to foster their feelings usually can bring about those changes that satisfy their deepest convictions. Beliefs that are strong enough usually manifest themselves in concrete accomplishments. Today we live in a world that demands more of each man than any time that we can think back to in our retrospection. Our time has been one of much tension and pressure, but only few of us know a childhood that can parallel that of our children who have been raised in an,atmosphere of almost continuing war and a constant fear of atomic destruction. To most of us they are the means of stabilizing the world and solving its complex problems. If this Rito be the case, then they must bear the burden and must be far better prepared than we. Cf J, In our seventh.grade we learn the poem by Longfellow, The Builders, and we might well take our cue from one of his stanzas: “Build today, then, strong and sure, With a firm and ample base: And ascending and secure Shall tomorrow find its place.” PAGE 9 OS ae r. She came to the Academy only two years ago, and is already known as the boarders’ “best friend.” pie In the office she does a very fine job as secretary, and her efficiency in paper work is excellent. We, the senior class and the whole school, thank you for all the consideration and understanding that you have bestowed upon us. PAGE 14 | Ka | Mrs. Mangham has been the dietitian at the Academy for several v years. Her meals are not only very nourishing but they are also very good. Mrs. Mangham is a very good person to have around the Academy. Thank you very much for a year of fine food and wonderful understanding. PAGE 15 Se ot eo ve Our Nurse Mrs. M. S. Dozier has been mother and nurse to the boarders at c the Academy for five years. She has done everything from curing pneumonia to mending shirts for both boarders and day students. We honor her not only as a fine and loyal nurse, but also as a wonderful friend and an energetic help. We are proud to have her at the Academy. PAGE 16 The Cooking Staff Our cooking staff consists of six of the finest cooks in San Antonio. We are proud to have them at the Academy and we appreciate all that they do to make our meals better. All of us here at S.A.A. wish to thank our cooking staff for its f ine work this year. Campus Engineer Did you ever wonder how the Academy keeps itself so neat and orderly? All the credit goes to Clell Myers, our “campus engineer.” Without Clell the school would be in a state of complete confusion. Only Clell knows where the brooms, shovels, mops, etc... . can be found. We would like to take time out and thank Clell for his many talents. OE Oe ee The Band and Orchestra Mr. Jimmie Klein, known to many of his friends as the ageless mu sician, has provided the impetus which has created outstanding junior musicians from young men with talent and desire. Few of Jimmie’s students know him by any other name and all would cheerfully follow him to the ends of the earth. He is the Pied Piper of S.A.A. complete with clarinet instead of flute. His secret lies in his constancy of temperament. He seldom loses patience with his boys and always gives them time to find themselves in any situation. His is not a technique of pressure but instead one of praise. Many teachers of various subjects could well learn from Jimmie. We salute his many talents and we appreciate him for what he has been. | PAGE 18 Ee ee o The Piano oe nan Wek. aso: We Joining our staff this year, Mrs. Vick McDowell has brought a deeper and richer understanding of music and its implications. She not only has the rich heritage of training at Julliard Conservatory but also has the wonderful talent of a capable teacher. There has been increasing discussion of broadening her scope of effectiveness from the standpoint of both music appreciation and the introduction of a glee club. Her pupils have found in her a stern but loving taskmaster who has been unwilling to accept anything but their best. Perhaps the most fitting testimonial came from one of her younger pupils who decided that Mrs. McDowell was such a good teacher that he was going to marry her. We look forward to a long and fruitful association with Mrs. McDowell. PAGE 19 a Oe Oe oe Our Teachers What are sailboats without a wind? What a re limbs without a trunk? What are brains without ideas? These and many more things are what you, our faculty, mean to us in our daily lives at the Academy and often away from here. You are the wind that fills our sails and pushes us toward our goals, both scholastically and spiritually. You are the steadfast trunk which provides us with stability and toward which we can always turn in trying times. We know you will never falter or let us down, for each of us understands that you know how much we depend on you. As the limbs of the tree are to the trunk, such is our relationship to you. We are all born into this world with a brain, but we need ideas and | guidance to help us cultivate it. Without these ideas we are only | pitiful beings. Without you, our teachers, we are less. We are lucky here at this particular Academy to have gathered together one of the finest groups of young men to be found anywhere. This group — the ranking gold — is not the whole of the assets of our student body. However, they do represent what we are at the Academy and what we stand for: loyalty, discipline, intellect, and honor. PAGE 58 ee | we THE GOLDBRAID The officers of the battalion this year have added a little more to the meaning of receiving a goldbraid. It is no wonder that we have such a fine organization with such an able group of leaders. Every man who received a braid entered enthusiastically into each school affair. Each officer awarded this honor has done his utmost to carry the responsibilities which were given to him. PAGE 59 TOP NON-COMS The end of another year has brought to mind the difficult task of choosing those from this group who are to be the leaders of the battalion for the coming year. These men have been understudying from day to day in order to be more qualified for the tasks of the year ahead. The non-coms rank from corporal to first sergeant. These ranks help them to learn responsibilities, but these non-coms are actually the backbone of the student body because in the coming years they emerge as officers. It is hard to estimate the time and effort that goes into putting together an annual and solving the problems that are just a small part of the annual. From the making of individual pictures for the class groups to the final organization of the advertising and editorial copy takes many long and often heartbreaking hours. Here is where the longing for the activities of the leisure hours must be set aside and the work of the annual must take precedence. The eighth graders have carried most of the load, but along with them have been those to whom they must surrender the tasks for the year to come. Ours and theirs is always a call to tomorrow and the challenges therefrom. PAGE 64 + + + Te Eel eS | + + + ¥ AD SALESMEN It would be impossible to get all of the boys who sold ads into this picture because when this picture was taken to meet a deadline with the photographer and engraver there were not nearly as many salesmen as the final accounting showed. Over one hundred of our fellow cadets sold ads and accounted for the largest sales since the annual has been a part of the school. PAGE 65 A he a ee CADET CADENCE SAN ANTONIO ACADEM MILITARY SCHOOL FOR BOYS The size of our staff this year has nothing to do with the fact that our newspaper gets better and better, but the quality of the staff does have much to do with its improvement. PAGE 66 oA) ae | i ee he THE LITERARY SOCIETY Every cadet at one time or another is thankful for the Literary Society and its program. Every Wednesday during the first thirty minutes of school, the cadets participate in the society's weekly program. This could range from a debate on current subjects to a film about China, or it could include some guest speaker who brings a discussion of some timely subject. Whatever it brings, however, it is the respon- sibility of this group to make it interesting to the largest number of students that it can possibly reach, and this year these cadets have done an excellent job. PAGE 67 oe oe ee ee THE VAT AH BERIG Gas This group of boys deserves a good round of applause for the great job they have done this year. Under the direct supervision of Coach Priest, the Athletic Club opened up a general store, in order to help gain additional funds for the athletic department. During the football season, these boys were especially hard at work selling school pennants at the games, and staging pep rallies for the team. They have greatly contributed to the funds for our athletic needs, ] and the students and coaches deeply thank them for their efforts. PAGE 68 Se ae aa | +e PROMOTION BOARD Decisions! Decisions! Decisions! We see the painstaking hours that our “beloved” Promotion Board puts into its decisions go fleeting by as this group makes lists of recom- mendations for the promotion of the many students deserving of various honors. Many times we feel disappointed by their decisions but in the final analysis they are really the on ly ones that know all of the facts that have gone into their choices and recommendations. Without them we would not always have a thorough evaluation from our fellow cadets and the decision would tend to be one-sided. So, thankfully we salute you, our Promotion Board. From i its early organization to its actual performance befo re an audience, there is much that has to be done. This has been accomplished in 1963-64 with more than the usual effort. Frustration and hardship are usually mixed in equal quantities for both the coaches and players on all kinds of teams. For this reason tempers flare and, in short, people act too normal. Occasionally much to the chagrin of all concerned this happens even at S.A.A. But, with all of that there is still the greatest of under- i standing and the greatest of admiration that is mutually shared among players and coaches alike. It is no crime to be human and often it 1s the boys themselves who respect and understand this better than any- one else. We are proud of these men who lead us into battle for our self- respect and to achieve our victories. Their patience, their understand- ing, and their liking for each of us has made our teams the best. Finding the footballs and getting together the water bottles, locating the basketballs, checking the stopwatches, collecting the game jerseys, etc... . are just a few of the things that the managers are accustomed to.
