BLUE BONNET '62 949494 949494 To MR. JOHN D. PRlEST Teacher ancl Director of Athletics We Respectfully Dedicate Blue Bonnet '62 9494-K 9494-K Dedication Coach Priest who has been a member of the Academy faculty since 1952 has always been a close friend of both boarder and day student. Besides being the greatest Math teacher in the world, he is also the Athletic Director and our representative on the sports league council. He is seen at all hours of the day at any given corner of the campus giving some student a bit of friendly advice or perhaps reprimanding him for some inefficiency. Eighth graders will long remember the last study hall gathering in his classroom to either seriously study their Algebra or simply to get out of study hall. Also during this period we will remember when two or more struggling little waifs from some other class would meander timidly into the room for the acceptance of their fate - some punishment for their conduct in another class. Although he is no longer a coach actively engaged in training the students, occasionally he gives us all a treat by putting on his football pants and a jersey and lets us see him give a few of the pointers from the good old days. He may be seen cornering some novice lineman to improve his erouch in the line or giving some running tips to one of the backs, but whatever he does it is always good advice. Being our representative to the sports league, he can be seen at every game. He participates in every league meeting and livens up our frames bv his interest. D 1 The San Antonio Academy of Texas annual staff and the eighth grade are proud to dedicate this Blue Bonnet ,62 to Coach John D. Priest. PAGE 3 wk 94 94 X 64 44 In Memoriam In February of this year many of the members of the faculty and a large number of the friends of the school were saddened by news of the death of Mr. Sam Bondurant, the Colonelis brother. Mr. Bondurant was a member of the faculty of the Academy when it was a high school and through this association was a familiar figure to many. His visit to us last year was one that was enjoyed by all who had the opportunity to know him. His quick wit and charming personality endeared him to man and boy alike. Such a man as Mr. Bondurant is not often found in our time. Unselfish, kind, devoted, Christian -terms with true meaning in rela- tion to describing this man - can only by comparison with the man himself seem hollow. Our life is richer for having known him. Bondurant PAGE6 949494 949494 The Chairman ofthe Board Speaks As the Chairman of the Board of the San Antonio Academy of Texas, I feel this has been a particularly gratifying year in terms of scholastic growth, but I am somewhat disappointed by the financial problems that beset an institution such as ours. In the past we have always been proud of the fact that we have included in our student body boys from all walks of life, from all economic areas, and from beyond our borders geographically. In the same vein, we have asked only that a boy have a belief in God and that he not feel embarrassed by his faith whatever it might be. His denomination has been as sacred to us as it was to him. Believing in these facets of our educational or moral philosophy has become increasingly more difficult financially for in order to do these many things tuition costs must remain in the area where many can afford to avail themselves of the service rather than a few. Without the help of a denomination or some foundation, the only hope of existence and continuation of these tenets must lie in the hands of those who will come forward to offer the assistance necessary. From the early interest that has come to light, it would appear that there are those that are definitely interested but much needs to be done. There has been much pleasure in my life that has come in dealing with boys and young men but I must confess that during the past two years I have returned to the teaching of one class of Latin each day and this has indeed been as enlightening to me as anything. I find myself anticipating the opportunity to share knowledge with them and to enjoy their daily progress in learning. It would appear that you are always a teacher regardless of what changes take place in position. As some thirty-one of you stand on the threshold of new opportunity in education with new fields to conquer, may I offer you my continuing hopes for success and the unswerving devotion that I have to the future for each of you. May you always be Academy men and live up to the standards that have been set for you here. PAGE 7 79 PF PP 94 X af President Major W. T. Bondurant, Jr. XXX- 94-P494 The President's Message Throughout the past few months the atmosphere around the Academy has been somewhat charged with expectancy and Dame Rumor has found many happenings to make much grist for her mill. Finally we have hushed most of these rumors by placing in the hands of our parents and friends a brochure which outlines the basic elements of our first campaign for improving the school physically. I am happy to report that there is already in evidence a large amount of interest in the Academy of tomorrow. I could dwell for some time on the accomplishments of our students both individually and collectively for this and past years, but these things, though they may indeed be prologue, are not the laurels to be rested upon. Instead, we must view them in a perspective which makes them only the guideposts to spur all of us on to greater goals and new achievements. Excellence is something that many schools once hoped to find in their prospective students, whereas it is now an element demanded by them. This is particularly true of the schools that are grouped together as prep schools. This has built in the elementary and junior high school student and teacher a new and higher sense of values, but it has also created an ever changing sense of values. For what was a criteria for entrance in some schools just a year ago can no longer be considered for entrance next September. You may tell yourself that you know that last year's fifth graders or eighth graders didnit have to work as hard as you did this year. In most instances you are quite right in this belief because it is necessary each year to evaluate what has passed in order to meet the new demands of the future. This is not done to make life miserable for you as it seems to you at the moment, but it is rather to help you early to understand the importance of reaffirming your own faith in yourself and to keep you ever aware that in your life ahead you must be conscious of the major changes that occur so that you can meet the demands and be the person that we here want you to become. We readily admit our selfishness in respect to you for we have spent our time to both teach and preach those concepts that we feel will make of you the right thinking person we here want you to become. To those of you whom we see for the last time in our classes, God speed and God bless you. May we ever live up to you and you to us. PAGE 9 Pl- PF X- 94 94 94 The Headmaster Mr. J. D. As a casual obseryer it would appear that little is going on and you might conclude that little does go on in a school office., Nothing could be further from the truth. t, Our office staff is probably one of the most reliable and efficient in the country. They have been more than faithful in carrying out the many and varied tasks assigned them by parents, teachers, and students. Misses Edith and Rosamoncl Biles, sisters, have been our helpful companions through many long and often thankless hours. Part of their work has been the filling out and sending of the report cards that parents want to see and most cadets don't. But in spite of this treason which is really a mild form anyway. the annual staff would like to say a humble uthank you for your outstanding job. PAGE 14 Pi- Pi- X' 94 94 94 Our Dietitian About five years ago Mrs. A. D. Mangham became a member of the Academy family. Before coming to us she was already well versed in the facts of cafe and cafeteria management. For many years she operated the Manor Tea Room, an outstanding San Antonio Restaurant. All of the students love her because of her marvelous personality as well as her wonderful meals. She has such a willing spirit and is always eager to help those who pass under her influence. One of her greatest pleasures is fixing refreshments for the dances and we are of course those who most benefit from this pleasure. Mrs. Mangham, we the cadets of S. A. A. are proud to have you as our dietitian and want you to know we truly return the love you have for us. PAGE 15 we we we X X 44 Our Nurse sw .WL fins-w,.,,.i . , . W., , 'tw Mrs. Mamie Dozier, our nurse, has finally come back after a yearis absence. We gratefully acknowledge this return and welcome you back. The boarders know Mrs. Dozier well as both housemother and nurse and know how willingly she makes herself available for all of the little hurts and major repairs, too. Almost every time she turns around there is some boarder at her elbow to ask her to sew on buttons or stripes. At other times someone is sick and is headed for treatment. Mrs. Dozier's help is not only readily available to the boarder but to the day student as well. We are truly grateful for you and your help to us, Mrs. Dozier. PAGE 16 XXX- 94-X74 Our Music Department We pride ourselves on our fine music department. The Academy boasts one of the finest bands of comparable size in the city. Every boy here is familiar with their fine meals which are welcome breaks in our day. The cooks, the best in the South, are Dorothy and Ora Lee. Backing them up in the centerfield known as the dining room are llula, Fairy C., Myrtle, and Mable. Dorothy is the head cook and Ora Lee, probably best known to the boarders, is the night or evening meal cook. Besides gladly bringing seconds, they are the first to say no harm done when something falls or is spilled on the table. We, the senior class, have greatly appreciated them and hopefully look to the schools we will attend to sec if their meals can at least come close to those we have had here. Our Maintenance Man Clell is a man of many talents and many names but out of all of these there arises the really capable person that he is. It would be hard for us to do anything if it were not for Clell and his seemingly endless supply of patience and good humor. He only gripes when he reaches the end of his rope and he has the longest rope on the campus. We appreciate his help more than he can know! I XGII ll! ss E s Q X-X-be -X94-K The Members of the Faculty V' The faculty which is capably headed by Mr. Giambruno, the Headmaster, has as its prime function the instruction and discipline of the students but second to this would be the discussion as a group the ways and means of improving efforts of individual students. Toward this end the faculty meets as a group every two weeks for the considera- tion of the rise and fall of grades, classroom techniques, and what might generally be termed Hproblemsw. Meetings are held for consideration of promotion lists and the possible effects of these promotions toward improvement of certain areas of student life. Though the faculty is essentially a group working together each individual teacher accepts it as his responsibility to offer suggestions to the boys within the framework of his own course and hence is essentially his guide and counsellor. Many students may not think it is true because student and teacher are not always on the best of terms, but the faculty deserves a hearty thank-you for jobs well done. PAGE 19 X-PGP? PAGE zo X-XPP P95979 Cl -AQ Vs Q D1 V If Qu F JN XXX XXX CLASS OF I962 Eighth Grade History The Eighth Grade had few but very interesting trips during the school year. One of these trips was the history trip to Austin in which we learned about our state government and our state court system. This trip was wonderfully exciting for two reasons: lj VVe got to go to AUSTIN with our classmates, and 2D we were let out of school for a day. It was just like a well deserved vacation. Of course we were not without a chaperone. He was our government teacher, Prof. Corey. VVC also had a science trip to the San Antonio Gollcge planetarium with our science teacher, Col. Fletcher. The trip was made so that the members of the Eighth Grade could learn more about the heavens and stars. We walked through San Pedro Park to the planetarium at S.A.C. The Eighth Grade also had many interesting and exciting ex- periences, such as promotions, last study hall in Coach Priest's classroom, and the Military Ball. But this is only part of the Eighth Grade history. If you want more details, you had better ask one of your Eighth Grade friends. Most of these men have been a part of the school from the fourth grade and a few from the third. They have indeed had an opportunity to mature and develop in the best possible way - seholastieally and otherwise. The influence of the battalion commander, Lt. Col. Antonio Algarbe, can be measured in daily progress on the athletic field and the improve- ment of the discipline in the dormitory. P XGE 56 as af X vs 94 av BATTALIGN GOLDBRAID The officers really became more worthy of the name gold braid this year with the addition of the new shoulder gold braids to bring about a readier recognition of the group. The vying for position which is so characteristic of healthy com- petition was felt in every facet of school life from the classroom to the drill field and from there to the athletic competition. Each man who won his braid entered actively into the various competitive areas within the framework of daily activity and learned extensive lessons from this. As seniors it has been our privilege to serve as the leaders of the cadet corps and we hope that we have lived up to the honor given us. IAC-I1 57 X as X ar X 1 RANKING NON-COMMISSIONED OFFECERS This year the battalion has been most fortunate in having a mixed group of seventh and eighth graders to take the key positions of first scrgcants and master sergeants. Usually the cadet corps faces many problems that cannot always be reckoned with by the seventh grade but this particular year many of thc facets of training were strengthened and stimulated by the addition of these eighth grade non-coms- IXGE 8 949494 949494 NONLOMMISSIONED OFFICERS With sueh a large and competent group of eorporals and sergeants, it is little wonder that we have sueh an excellent battalion. From this group will come the leaders of the senior class so it is essential that they get an early trial by fire. We look forward to the years ahead when they will fill our shoes more eapably than we did. PAGE 59 az X JK X 94 94 SOMETHING NEW! Buckingham Palace has nothing on us, wc change our guards too. PACL 60 94 'K C 'A F D1 VI S lr A J 'r lr J 94-X 949494 9494 94 ANNUAL STAFF This yearls annual staff has had a particularly hard time producing your yearbook because of the limited time that has been made available. Since the new schedule for the seventh and eighth grades has so limited the study hall or free period time, we have found ourselves with little or no time for the actual technical development of our material. In spite of this hollow sounding excuse, we are pleased to have had the opportunity to provide for you Blue Bonnet 362. PXGI 6 X as 94 X ar AD GETTERS The group of hardy salesmen pictured above and their worthy leader have had no end of headaches. Each time that they have sup- posed themselves ready to sign someone on the dotted line, there has had to be a new approach tried. A few times there has been the much- dreaded turn down from one whom they knew would be the big onef, Often because of these disappointments they have succeeded elsewhere and thus they have learned perseverance. Take a good look at them, for they are indeed greatly responsible for the book which you hold in your hand. PAGE 63 94 v4 af 94 if 94 GOVERNMENT CLUB For the eighth grade this year has been filled with new challenges. Among these has been the government course which was returned to the curriculum. Primary in the study has been an introduction to law and its importance within the framework of government. A visit to the state capitol and the state supreme court were highlights of this yearjs activities. PAGE 64 9494-K-54 -X94 SCIENCE CLUB -K The 8B class was chosen to represent the interest of the entire school in the study of science. As the space age continues to prove the worth of the scientist and this phase of science continues to be the prime interest of modern men, the Academy Cadet will keep abreast of the important happenings and attempt to make his own discoveries. PAGE 65 949494 949494 THE LATIN CLUB From amo to volo, through tenses, over conjungations, down de- clensions, the Latin classes this year have truly run quite an obstacle course. Their introduction to Latin has been in some instances a painful one for they have hated to give their blood as a transfusion to bring this so-called dead languagew back to life. Regardless of the personal sacrifice that has been constantly made each day with many cries of ufoul play, boo, never again, etc .... H, it has always been most interest- ing to heard the students as they take their dates into the hall to show them their Latin class room or their Latin book and mention the fact that they are after all only in the seventh or eighth grade and are already taking Latin. They don,t always mention the fact that Latin is really taking some of them, but c'est la vie. Comprencz-vous, Monsieur Le Colonel Bondurant? PAGE 66 9494 949494 BOOSTER CLUB The feeling has been rather prevalent at the Academy that school spirit has been somewhat lacking in certain areas and lagging behind in still others. Too few students have been in evidence at the games that were supposedly just run of the mill competition. There seems to be no problem for the students to join in the spirit at a Peacock contest but the group above, composed almost entirely of members of the starting lineup of the eighth grade football team, decided to organize a Booster Club to create more interest. One of their prime efforts was the big pep rally staged on the day before the final game with St. Pius X School. All of us were proud to have been a part of the Academy Spirit on that day and the days that followed. PAGE 67 9494-74-K 94 THE DEBATINC CLUB 'K Some very important issues of a current nature were debated by the members of the seventh and eighth grades. Some of these were: Federal Aid to Education, Capital Punishment, Lowering the Voting Age, and The Abolishment of the Poll Tax. The points were well thought out and in many instances the rebuttal material was excellent. On occasion the rebuttal session bordered on the verge of becoming something slightly more heated but the good taste and sportsmanship of the competitors overcame these moments. Along with the debates, there was introduced a new interest called Nieet the Press! This was so well done that it often was hard to realize that students were participating. Congratulations on your many achievements. PAGE as X 44 as an X 94 CADET CADENCE STAFF Few words of praise can be added to the many that have come this year in recognition of the outstanding job done by the entire staff of the paper. Under the guidance of Mr. Corey, the faculty sponsor, the Cadence has achieved new dimensions and has been constantly more appealing with each issue. The recognition dinner given in April was the highlight of the year and will be long remembered by all concerned. To our fellow journalists, the members of the staff of Blue Bonnet ,62 are privileged to add their c'VVell done? PAGh 69 9494-K 9494 PROMOTION BOARD In just a few short years since the organization of the highest rank- ing officers into a board to consider the cadets in terms of promotion, there has developed a greater sense of responsibility in all the officers and non-commissioned officers. At one time the entire promotion list was decided by one man, the commandant. Later it became a faculty affair. Now it is really a combination of all and this is rightly so because the boys themselves should have some perogative in relation to their leaders. This year their choices have been excellent and we trust that those who take over in their places may do as fine a job in the future. PAGE 70 -X94 -P49494 LETTERMENr To win oncls letter is an almost secret and sacred thing in the eyes of any athlete. It is the inspiration that helps the perspiration, or at least helps it to seem worthwhile during the long afternoons of practice and the skull-knocking that takes place during the ball games. These young men have conducted themselves with excellence on the athletic field and truly deserve the honors that they received. Many schools can look forward to sharing the fine training and the good sportsman- ship these athletes will bring to them. PAGE 71 5 -KX-K 9494-K SENIOR DRILL TEAM Again this year the cries of pain and anguish rang out after the Battle of Flowers Parade and chief among these were the cries of the new initiates - the first year men on the drill team. But with all of this the blisters were somewhat to be construed as badges of courage for now they could take their places rightfully beside the many who had marched before. The year was filled with many things but nothing so outstanding as the parade of these champions. PAGE 72 949464 94-94-P4 JUNIOR DRILL TEAM To so many of us who are about to leave, it seems but yesterday that we made our military debut as members of this organization. lNe were the Hlittle cadetsn who spent their time so eagerly working at lunch recess to try to win the ribbon that was to become such a cherished symbol not only through that year but through the years to come. We also realized that this was something of a guarantee for our future po- sition on the Senior Drill Team and, too, that it was insurance for the future in company competition. As we nostalgically look back, we can congratulate you on the choice that you have made and the fine asset you have been to the battalion. PAGE 73 -K 94 af 94 44 X THE SPANISH CLUB The group of boys pictured above were chosen by the Spanish instructor, Mr. Ladouceur, as the outstanding students from the stand- point of class participation and achievement. They have shown an interest that is above the norm in terms of both the scholastic and cultural. Studying the music, art, and customs of the people of Mexico has helped them understand the true need for language attainments in dealing with the people of all other countries. PAGE 74- vs 94 X 94 74 94 LITERATURE CLUB This club and the booster club came as outgrowths of the develop- ment of understanding in parliamentary procedure and both will cer- tainly be future sources of improvement at the Academy. The interest in books, plays, and poetry has been enhanced by individual efforts in these fields from the report standpoint and from the creativeness exhibited. In the future it is hoped that time may become available for more sessions during which these and other facets of literature may be explored. Coach Trcka with his seventh and eighth grade team had a winning year in football that will be long remembered for spirit and cooperation. Coach Burke with his younger fifth, sixth, and seventh grade juggernaut made hay while the sun shone and even when it didn't. These boys played most of their games on Saturday mornings and it became almost monotonous to hear the winning scores in chapel each Monday morning. The seasons of basketball and track were very good seasons although there were not the trophy winning teams present that had made the football season such an outstanding success. The young man pictured with these three already mentioned gentlemen is Coach Charles Terrell, the new addition to our staff as physical education instructor. He has brought some new refinements to the P.E. course, such as, the rainy-day movies, health instruction, and the TERRELL STOMP. We are indeed proud to have these men for our coaches and appreciate the hard work that has gone into the success of each team. PAGE 78 af X X 94 ar 94 THE MANAGER STAFF Most of these stalwarts pictured above would have been active participants in the team play had not the league rules been reorganized to read that people that were over fifty andfor over seven feet tall couldn't play. This is not to say that they have not already played a large part in gaining these gladiatorial laurels, for they have indeed done the lion's share of gaining fame for themselves and the Academy. Their type of hard-hitting, clean, sportsmanship is what wins hall games. Our hats are off to the Co-Champions of the League. Next year the good word will still be NBeat Piusw. lXfl IH XXX- XX-P?
