To MISS EDITH BILES We, the Senior Class of l96I, Respectfully and Gratefully Dedicate Blue Bonnet '6I ilrikeikik ikikwfr DEDICATION The Class of 1961 takes extreme pride in dedicating this year's BLUE BONNET to Miss lldith Biles. An educator, business woman, confidant, and friend, she has been closely associated with schools and the business of schools for a good many years. Recognizing needs and anticipating those needs, Miss Biles has long been one of the proverbial Hunsung heroes. Her ready smile and cheerful attitude have truly endeared her to faculty and boys alike. Her willingness to fill the gaps in any number of necessary capacities and her abilities which make her so capable of this have been immeasurable assets to every phase of school life. Although Miss Biles is an Oklahoma native, we truly feel that the Senior Class of '61 can adopt her as their own uBig-hearted Texanw of the year. In doing so we dedicate Blue Bonnet '61 to her in recognition of her service to the school and to us. PACE '3 ilrilrwirik ikikikilr Mr. J. W. Culver The school was saddened this year by the death of one of its greatest teachers, Mr. W. Culver. Mr. Culver had retired from the field of teaching but not from the love of the school and his deep interest in boys. He was the last member of what many boys who went to both the Academy and TMI often termed the modern day counterpart of the Roman triumvirate. Rome had its Caesar, Crassus, and Pompey and the Academy its Bondurant, Culver, and Meyer. Those who knew Mr. Culver respected his teaching, feared his disdain, and loved him for his understanding and his devotion to those things which are of the highest value - love of Cod, love of his fellow- men, and unbounding devotion to his chosen profession. If some day we are fortunate enough to meet Prof. on that distant shore, I feel certain that he will be puttering around in his favorite old hat planting his flowers and adding just a touch of his own philosophy to heaven,s scene. Bondurant iifikfifkwik ikiifvfkilr Message from the Chairman Of the Board This past year has seen many changes in the basic life of the San Antonio Academy that only time will be able to interpret for all of us. For many years the Academy has endeavored to produce and has produced outstanding young men that have not faltered in this trust. It has been done in the educational field with a group of men who have demanded and received a standard of excellence above the average. Often the ingenuity and the desire of both teacher and student have been the only real tools of this achievement. However the field of general education has been expanded to include at the elementary school level courses of a depth never dreamed of in elementary education fifty years ago. New methods of visual education and audio-education have created needs for equipment and special classrooms for studies in science, geography, history, literature, foreign language, etc. . . , that were not initially planned as a part of the physical properties and plant at the Academy. A lessening of the family participation in outdoor activities and an ever increasing interest in the medium of television by the younger generation has made it imperative that the school take a more integral part in the physical development of the boy. Where one coach was often all a school of the general type of the Academy needed, it now becomes most necessary to have a staff of them and a well developed changing program. A gymnasium was not thought of as being essential when the Academy was young because there were few sports that called for indoor participation. Now there are few schools that either do not have a gymnasium or at least the partial use of such a facility. In changing our status to non-profit and our name to the San Antonio Academy of Texas, we hope that a pattern has been set for the attainment of greater goals than have ever before been realized. Our name and status may be changed but rest assured that we face the new era with a greater strength of conviction in the strong principles of the past than ever before but with an equally strong conviction that though ideals should not change, ideas should and the Academy must set the pace. PAGE 'ik ik YZ? il? ii? ik' ik 63? The President of the Academy R X V T EX! Major W. T. Bondurant, Jr. ff-YA K- KS vfrvilriiriir iirilrsfrvir The President's Message I believe it to be most essential that I share with those of you who take the time to read this particular page of the annual a small portion of the conflict within my mind and heart at the time I found myself elected your school's President. By some standards, I should have been immediately overcome by the joy of at last reaching a goal that I had hoped for and dreamed about since I put on an Academy uniform as a second grader. Admit- tedly there were times when I thought in arithmetic class, algebra class, or Prof. Roeis history class that I had probably better make up my mind to become more skilled and less educated. But though other professions came in view and other goals seemed to be more lucrative I'm afraid I never lost the real one - President of the Academy. I must honestly say however that I didnlt look for it quite so soon. I had felt that one day I would be tired of teaching or at least tired of the classroom and of more service out of the classroom than in and at this time, it would perhaps be the Board's wish that I quit dealing the students misery both physically and mentally and become an ad- ministrator. QIn a lot of private schools it has long been the custom to make the poorest teachers into the best administrators, so I can assume that I have at last been found out.j In view of these admissions, I feel quite certain that you can interpret that I intend to continue to participate in some measure in the teaching activities of the school until I have to stop. In my own mind I am convinced that there is no substitute for the personal class- room contact with the student. Few judgments can be made with equity and fairness without a close observation and this can only come from personal contact. I cannot nor will I be a president in an 'civory tower. I may not always be available to my patrons and parents but I will be to my cadets. In the immediate future, there are to be many changes of a physical and curriculum nature that come to the school. Some are to mean the expansion of campus and buildings as well as the addition of new courses. Other changes will include activity clubs for debating, dra- matics, choral, etc. But may I say in closing that these are things that I have purposely said will be added. They will never take the place of or precedence over the elements of strong scholarship and character that are the very reasons for the Academy's continued existence. At almost any hour of the school day, one or the other can be seen wearing out pavement and sole bringing message after message to the school building or drill and athletic field. In the midst of the confusion that always exists in and around most boys' schools, there always seems to arise like a Phoenix from the ashes the orderliness of the office and the consistency of a job well done. PAFE 1.2 ikikik ikilrifrik Dietitian Mrs. Mangham, our favorite dietitian, constantly seems to know just the right thing to keep this small army moving. Although the day students sec only the preparation of lunch and feel thc gratification of a full stomach once a day, the boarders must look to Mrs. C'Mang', for much more than this. Planning the refreshments for the dances, the monthly boarder birthday party, the special events dinners, such as, the one the boarders have the night before the Christmas Holidays begin, sewing on a needed stripe or a quick button, or supervising refreshment time each after- noon, are just a few of the things that have endeared Mrs. Mangham to all of us at the Academy. PAGE 13 ikikikik Sfkikiki? Nurse Miss Rubie Moseley joined the staff of the Academy just shortly before the Christmas Holidays this year. She has capably taken care of the scratches, kicks, stomps, and breaks that are part of every boyis life. Soon after the midterm exams, Miss Moseley was accused by some of having left the campus but they finally learned that chicken-pox had come to roost at the Academy and Miss Mosely was surrounded by a large brood of infected boarders. The boys have appreciated very much Miss Moseley's care and interest. PAGE 14 wiki? wiifeifi? General Staff The teaching staff of the school is very capably handled by Mr. Giambruno, the Headmaster. Bi-monthly meetings of the group are held regularly with supplementary meetings as the need arises. The classroom techniques which may be expanded, deleted, or improved upon are discussed as well as the rises and falls in grades. Suggestions are offered and agreed upon for improvement of all types of standards and reasons for apparent drops in achievement or effort are considered. The entire faculty often is called upon to consider matters of a dis- ciplinary nature and to counsel with the students and mete out necessary punishment for infractions of rules. There are truly many facets to the life of a teacher in a school such as ours. When the faculty lists were eireulated we did our usual bribing and for a few days managed to be officer material. When the results were in and the officers were at last in their places, whether we made it or not we were relieved to know who was in eaeh position. To the seventh grade we will these golden anxious moments for next year. PAGE 49 ik ik ik 'ik ik ik ik ik NON-COMS The stripes are almost cold now that the end of the year is drawing near, for the dream of buttons and commands are imagined by the seventh grade and the dream of new and better positions in the battalion face the sixth grade. New resolutions are already in mind and new promises are almost ready to be made. The future always promises hope and new commands to conquer. PAGE 5U ik ik ik ik ik ik ir wk TOP NON-CGMS These cadets have proven that they were capable enough as younger cadets to hold positions of trust in the upper eehelon of training. If they have maintained these capabilities and in the eyes of the faculty and the administration they are not wanting in their skills needed for command, they will certainly find themselves among the gold braid for next year. The group pictured above know that it takes a lot more than just sitting and waiting for the annual. Many long hours have been spent in advertising layouts and phone calls to advertisers to complete the last section of the annual just as many have been spent in getting pictures made and plates engraved for the final printing of all the editorial section. As you leaf through this year's book, take the time to thank each of these cadets for the time they have spent that you might have an annual. IAGII. 54 Sf? wir ik ii? ik ikiik ik SENIOR PROMOTION BOARD Last year a new promotion arrangement was made for making the battalion promotions in the spring semester. The battalion staff and the company commanders were set apart as a promotion board to l determine to a large degree what boys had shown to their fellow cadets real promise in day to day activities both on the drill field and personal Contact in school and at play. Pictured above are the men who com- prise this year's board. PAGE 55 N l vi? wir ik ik vi? vi? wir ir SENIOR DRILL TEAM The senior drill team is the largest that the school has ever had. There is constant interest in the team and although not much time is allotted to the daily practice a great deal is learned and accomplished. For those who do not ordinarily participate in most of the major sports, it is an opportunity to learn teamwork and the importance of ac- complishing for a group rather than working always for individual attainment. PAGE 6 ' r ik ik ik ik ik 'ikik ffk l JUNIOR DRILL TEAM l l The junior drill team, comprised of third, fourth, and fifth graders, l is always perfecting some new exhibition drill. Each day they seem to i work with new interest and in the constant hope that some day each y will be a part of the senior team with rifles, scarves, and all of the y other Hmore fancy trimmings. It is designed to give all of those willing to go out and stay with it the opportunity to learn the basic essentials of close order drill better and the elements of teamwork. PAGE 57 l it it wir if? it it Sir if? CADET CADENCE STAFF A short few years have elapsed since the newspaper came back to the campus. It has added more to the interest of the students than certainly the daily paper adds to the lives of our parents. Much of what the paper contains would be considered old and hashed over copy but it is fun to live over and more fun to see our names printed. We hope the paper will continue and grow in size and gain popularity with the alumni and friends of the school. PAGE 58 l i isserfszwiif skiers ADVERTISING CLUB The advertising portion of any publication very often sets the pattern for the whole entity. In the ease of school annuals, this is particularly true. Most would never reach the printed stage were it not for those who are the salesmen of ad space and buyers of same. Pictured above are the men most responsible for this 361 annual. PAGE 59 ikikikir ikiksirik SPANISH CLUB From 'Buenas Dias, to Estrellita and Borrachita is quite a transition but the Spanish students at SAA have somehow managed to bring the old into focus with the new. Mexico and Spain were once a neighbor- ing country and a new place to study in Geography but no more are they relegated to this seemingly unimportant position. From third to eighth grade, the language, customs, and geography of these places have become a very real thing. A tape recorder and four speed record player have given the students chances to hear themselves and others sing, read, and pronounce. The shared dream of all is that some day they might have language booths to practice not just Spanish but other languages and increase their speaking as readily as their reading abilities. PAGE 50 ikiirikifr ikikl THE SCIENCE CLUB To many of us science is just a word that brings to mind an old biology drawing, experiments that failed, or equations that couldn't or wouldnat balance, but to the fifth grade and the eighth grade at the Academy, it is a very real thing and one of profound interest. Maybe it stems from the fact that in our minds we have imagined more trips to the moon or planet X than our parents. Maybe we have climbed into more jets, spaceships, and time capsules than you. Perhaps it's because we've watched more guided missiles being built to our specifications and seen more fired through the glorious fact that we still have the world of imagination and make believe. But whatever it is Science is here to stay and what we do with it may decide whether we are here to stay. PAGE G1 'ik ii? ik if? it it sk ii? HISTORY CLUB The History Club could well be a title given to almost any group taking history at the school this year for there has been more real interest and energy in the field than ever before. From research to participation could well be their keynote for they have achieved much in the past history while keeping completely in touch with the present. From disappointments in the Republican defeat to becoming acquainted with the 'New Frontier' and Mr. Kennedy, they have gained new interests and new respect for history and government. PAGE 62 5 i ilrikiiriir 7f?7fl7'QfK THE LATIN CLUB There will always be some doubt and much argument pro and con, as to whether or not Latin is a dead language. There will further be those that contend that it is not only very much alive but that Latin is the one language that separates the true scholar from the ranks of the people who are educated for necessity rather than true learning. What- ever the feeling others may have, the Latin students at the Academy have determined that it is a language that requires more study and more knowledge of English than they ever dreamed and many are making their plans already to become more proficient in French and Spanish. PAGE 63 ik ik ik ik ik ik ik Sk LETTERMEN, WINNER'S OF THE A While not active as a Monogram Club or Letterman Club, the group that earns the 'A' is definitely worthy of a section as an organiza- tion. Most of this group have participated in athletics at the school since they were fifth graders and have done much to earn not only their letter but the honors accompanying it. With the training they have received and the effort made to employ it well, they will provide many high school coaches with a good nucleus for future winning combinations. PAGE 64 fl? 73? if?
