To the old life the class is attached by many bondsg hours filled with toil and ceaseless effort, happily blended with hours of play and enjoyment. It is difficult to contemplate the fact that soon we must depart from T. M. I., never to return as stu- dents. There is one consolationg we may depart from T. M. I. in the body, but in the spirit never! . WILLIAM N. HENSLEY. . .T swf. This indicates the rising popularity of such a schedule in a high school course. The benefits derived from being a post-graduate are manifold, the student holds a high military post, and scholastically attains a very good finish, which is essential for a successful college career. The post graduate course at T. M. I. may be compared with a junior college course at some other institution. Members of the post graduate class are: E. A. Basse, A. C. Chaffe, L. Chambers, J. Vista of the Year A few days before Commencement, a Senior sits in his desk, with solemn face supported by cupped hands. A far-away and dreamy look betrays the conflicting emotions which are his. Diploma days and Vacation are near at hand. Yet his eyes cloud at the thought of leaving all that has been T. M. I. These past few years have been all too short. And his mind, as in a dream, wanders over this last memorable year at T. M. I. There was that morn of last September 10, when school began. The first day found Prof. B answering countless questions, Captain Lynch giving everyone the 'once- over'g Profs. Meyer and Culver mapping the new students' courses for them, and everyone else mixed in the hub-bub of excitement. First on the list of many important events came T. M. I.'s Annual Open House, sponsored by the Faculty Wives' Committee. Then we plunged into the Football season, with the Panther Spirit, as always, predominating. Next came Prof. B's Mexican Dinner at the Original for S. A. A. and T. M. I. The Football Dance niched its place in our memory as one of the most colorful in history. The Squad and Platoons Competition was held in December with Company B walking off with all honors. Then, following this event in close succession, came the dreaded exams. The entire student body became gravely serious, realizing a battle of brain, not brawn, was im- minent. Then came the joyous Christmas Holiday Season-and a rest. And with the dawn of the New Year-clean records and worthy resolutions, days filled with study and military discipline. We had hardly settled down, when annual Federal Inspection was upon us with a bang, and as usual, T. M. I. came through with flying colors-a grade of Excellent in all subjects. Mid Term Finals dimmed the horizong but a good Baseball and Track team quickly chased them out of memory. Our Field Day, a symphony in Orange and Black, was witnessed by one of the largest crowds in history. The Battle of Flowers Parade and Graduation Parade lent final luster to an eventful year. Still sits the Senior in his desk, solemn face supported by cupped hands, and still his outward calmness betrays inward emotions. In a few days, Commencement will sound Taps to these days at T. M. I.-but they live forever in his memory. WILLIAM A. wooo. X 24 X I u.. llllliy... .'.' Many members of these gangs are celebrities. For an example, I will take the William A. Wood, who has a gift of doing the impossible fby his own admissionj. If it were not for our Billy the Corpus Christi Buc- caneers might not be mentioned here. These gangs are carefully fostered in T.M.I.g for they form lasting friendships which are the chief assets of spiritual wealth. Spiritual wealth is better than earthly riches because it lasts longer. Therefore our wise faculty promotes our friendships and strenghtens them as much as possible. The Army Gang In the army gang a great feeling of goodrfellowship prevails. LYNCH Captain Charles P. Lynch was born in St. Paul, Minnesota, April 12, 1893. Among the schools he attended are St. Patrick's School, Cretin High School, and St. Thomas College. Upon graduation from the latter he attended the First Officers Training Camp at Fort Snelling, Minnesota. Advance- ment came rapidly. On August 15, 1917, he was commissioned a Second Lieutenant. Two years following he was promoted to the rank of First Lieutenant and in three more years he was assigned to the rank of 'Captain. During the World War, Captain Lynch served overseas with the 350th Infantry of the 88th Division, which saw active service in both the Haute-Alsace sector and the Meuse-Argonne. After the signing of the Armistice, Captain Lynch was assigned to the 23rd, Infantry of the Second Division, part of the Army of Occupation. He returned to this country and was stationed in San Antonio from 1919 to 1922. After attending the Infantry School, Captain Lynch returned to Fort Sam Houston where he was assigned to the 23rd Infantry. He remained at this post until 1926 when he was assigned to foreign service in the Philippine Islands. In 1929 he returned to the United States and was assigned to the 26th Infantry at the Plattsburg Barracks, New York. He served as Adjutant of the 26th Infantry while stationed there. Captain Lynch married a San Antonio girl in 1920, and has four sonsg one of which attends T. M. I. and two who attend San Antonio Academy. Captain Lynch was detailed to his present post at T. M. I. in the summer of 19323 he at once proved his ability to handle boys. Captain Lynch's success has not been limited to military achieve- ments aloneg he brought about and maintained the school spirit for which T. M. I. is widely noted. We are extremely proud of this versatile skipper , and are going to regret very much when the time arrives for him to leave. SERGEANT FRANCIS M. SHOKES Sergeant Shokes was born in Charleston, South Carolina. He received his education in the public schools of jacksonville, Florida. Sergeant enlisted in the regular army on January 10, 1916, and saw active service on the Mexican border with the 23rd Infantry. During the World War, he was with the 23rd Infantry and is justly proud of being awarded the Purple Heart Medal for being honorably wounded in action. After the war he was with the Army of Occupation and was also privileged to serve in the 3rd Army Composite Regiment which made the Peace Parades in Paris, London, and Germany. , Sergeant Shokes has been a non-commissioned officer since 1917 and has been on R. O. T. C. duty since 1926. He came to San Antonio High Schools from Oklahoma A. 8: M. College where he was assistant to the P. M. S. 8: T. Since reporting for duty to T. M. I. on December 15, 1932, he has aided remarkably the progress of this school. Of special note is his coaching of the ril'le team, which won the William Randolph Hearst trophy in 1934 and took third place in 1955. While the training is not as rigid as that of the Senior School, it gives the boy in his early years self- discipline and respect for authority. The course en- courages initiative and gives the young boy confidence in his ability and at the same time develops a feeling of patriotism and respect for the nation's flag. No institution, educational or commercial, can ade- quately attain its aspirations without a system of disci- pline, and the military feature in the educational institu- tions has ever been considered a valued complement to all other disciplinary agencies. The value of this training cannot be estimated on a financial basis. The physical benefits derived by the participants are invaluable. Such training adds mate- rially to the virility of the boysg it teaches them self- reliance, self-respect and obedience-essentials that are absolutely necessary in this age of uncertainty. at ts at 5533'3I2i1'?? f l'U VTE 1 .1 U-x: 'f'g5z:1125gu ll W.i..ff'MIIllIIlIIlIl.m,7gtnnaawz.4 kd .L.f uS2a:VEHIIIIIIIIIHHlwimwllllll I 4 1 C ll ll! At first athletics may appeal to him as being just fun, but later outdoor exercise comes to mean something more to him than just pleasant pastime. Then he begins to see that such games are developing him both physically and mentally. Academy had a full schedule of sports for l954-1955, including football, baseball, basketball and daily swimming in San Pedro pool when the weather permitted, Many other playground games were enjoyed, especially by the hoarding boys. As formerly, Coach Pearce had Academy well represented in the Bexar County junior League Conference. Such inter-school contests took the attention of the older boys, who trained faith- fully for competition in football, basketball and baseball. Quite a feature in athletics on Academy playgrounds this year were the intramural teatns of intermediate and younger boys, organized into competing units by Prof. Barrett. Competition was keen here, and waxed warmest in basketball, five teams of the juniors competing for the school championship. The Wildcttts with Cutrer as captain won. Not only is it felt that much good material is being developed by these small-boy teams that will be useful in future years in Academy Varsity contests but the boys themselves are being benefiited immensely by this school-wide athletic program. Blue Bonnets! Uplift thy tiny heads. Where the sky so softly bends, To thy royal flowering beds. Be first to welcome spring-time, In her gorgeous robes enshrined, For thou art the most honored, Of all the flowering kind. Far o'er the verdant prairie, Where the sky so softy bends, There nods the bright Blue Bonnets, And sweetest fragrance spends. Blue Bonnets! Blue Bonnets! Thy charm We still relate On canvas and in poesy, Loved emblem of our State. -N. H. HARRISON. An inspiration-an inspiration for faith, courage, and honesty-that is what the bluebonnet typifies to me. Indeed, to the first pioneers, when the bluebonnet, symbol of Spring, made its appearance, it must have seemed to those sturdy souls like a message sent from Heaven-both a promise and a blessing for bounteous days to COITIC. The winds that blow over Texas prairies and through the fields of bluebonnets seem to echo the fame of bloody Alamo and of San jacinto's glory. All true Texans love the bluebonnet, just as they honor and cherish the memory of those glorious leaders who gave their all in a successful attempt to establish the freedom of Texas Our school annual has litly been called-the Blue Bonnet , for the name itself is inseparably connected with the great deeds and happenings of past days in Texas, the greatest state of the Union.
