new art department curriculum allows student specialization The 1971-72 school term saw major changes in course structure and facilities of the CHS Art department. Courses were altered to al- low students to specialize in certain areas. Art I still pro- vides a basic foundation in the principles and techniques of art. Art II students specialize in pre-commercia! art which in- cludes making posters and em- phasizes learning to letter. Spe- cial requests from other depart- ments are handled in Art II. Projects include posters for clubs, division pages for scrap books, the cover for the Ka- leidoscope, and a silk screen of St. Francis ' Prayer. The Let ' s be No. 1 Bobcat Booster pos- ters were produced by the Art II class. Art III now deals entirely with printmaking, the transfer of an image from one surface to another. Different processes studied include woodblocks, stencils, rubber stamps, silk screens, monoprints, and batiks. Drawing and printing are studied in depth in Art IV. The first semester is devoted to drawing in various mediums — pencil, ink, mixed media, and pastels. Painting in water color and acrylics comprise the sec- ond semester. Art V involves only three- dimensional art. Students ex- periment with found art sculpture, candles, mining and mixing their own clay, clay sculpture, wood carvings, and plaster sculpture. Under the former system Art II, III, and IV were more ad- vanced and in-depth studies of the same principles taught in Art I. Prerequisites were re- quired for all. Presently Art IV, and V are the only courses re- quiring a prerequisite — Art I. Craft classes continue with the same class structure of Crafts I and II, both general in emphasis, and Crafts III, which deals with sculptures and ce- ramics. The art department was moved from Emerson Hall to the Caddo Building which underwent slight remodeling in the 1971-72 school year. The interior of the building was painted and part of the ceiling replaced. Art work from all areas of the department was exhibited as part of the teacher ' s workday, March 10, and in the city-wide Art Fair, April 8-9.
