Courses were altered to al- low students to specialize in certain areas. Art I still pro- vides a basic foundation in the principles and techniques of art. Art II students specialize in pre-commercia! art which in- cludes making posters and em- phasizes learning to letter. Spe- cial requests from other depart- ments are handled in Art II. Projects include posters for clubs, division pages for scrap books, the cover for the Ka- leidoscope, and a silk screen of St. Francis ' Prayer. The Let ' s be No. 1 Bobcat Booster pos- ters were produced by the Art II class. Art III now deals entirely with printmaking, the transfer of an image from one surface to another. Different processes studied include woodblocks, stencils, rubber stamps, silk screens, monoprints, and batiks. Drawing and printing are studied in depth in Art IV. The first semester is devoted to drawing in various mediums โ€” pencil, ink, mixed media, and pastels. Painting in water color and acrylics comprise the sec- ond semester. Art V involves only three- dimensional art. Students ex- periment with found art sculpture, candles, mining and mixing their own clay, clay sculpture, wood carvings, and plaster sculpture. Under the former system Art II, III, and IV were more ad- vanced and in-depth studies of the same principles taught in Art I. Prerequisites were re- quired for all. Presently Art IV, and V are the only courses re- quiring a prerequisite โ€” Art I. Craft classes continue with the same class structure of Crafts I and II, both general in emphasis, and Crafts III, which deals with sculptures and ce- ramics. The art department was moved from Emerson Hall to the Caddo Building which underwent slight remodeling in the 1971-72 school year. The interior of the building was painted and part of the ceiling replaced. Art work from all areas of the department was exhibited as part of the teacher ' s workday, March 10, and in the city-wide Art Fair, April 8-9. Typing I is primarily concerned with developing touch-typing skills in personal and pre-vocational typing. Timed drills and copy assign- ments are vital exercises in the course. Typing II deals mainly with skills in vocational typing. Music is used during warm-ups in some classes. Students are required to be able to type at least 40 words per minute to take the course. Emphasis in shorthand is on speed and accuracy in dictation and transcription, and improvement of typewriting, spelling, punctua- tion, and sentence structure for personal use or employment pur- poses. Required as a pre-requisite is a Typing I credit or a typing course taken in conjunction with shorthand. Bookkeeping students practice basic principles of double-entry bookkeeping, financial statements, income tax and deductions, and business forms. The course teaches principles applicable in personal records as well as employment. A junior standing is required for the course. Problems in business arithmetic are based on business situations and transactions. Students learn to analyze and solve monetary problems. Not only do they confer with students, but counselors also work closely with teachers. In addition each counselor specializes in certain areas. According to estimates, counselors reach about 70 per cent of the student body in a year, and each one talks with approximately 40 students per day. Areas in which counselors work with students include scheduling, placement, career planning, setting up conferences with college and military representatives, personal problems, and helping students discover themselves and what they want to do. In relation to the curriculum, they accept suggestions and try to meet the requests and needs of students. Although students are assigned to one counselor for scheduling, they may change to another for other matters. Counselors and specific areas they deal with: Oscar Gomez, mi- nority problems; OIlie Kuykendall, office operations; Roy Lower, vo- cational; Mildred McClung, special assignments from Mr. White; Dr. J. T. Morrow, testing; and Fern Smathers, varsity program. A master ' s degree in counseling and at least three years teaching experience are required for becoming a counselor. The course begins with class- room instruction relating to op- eration of the vehicle and state laws. The objective of the course is to emphasize knowl- edge, skill, and attitudes of safe driving. After completion of this phase, students may apply for a restricted driver ' s license. The laboratory phase of the course includes simulators, range, and on-the-street driv- ing. The fee for this portion is $30. Housed in the Caddo Build- ing, the simulators are mock auto instrument panels. In- structors utilize films and elec- tronic devices that record the driver ' s response to the films. The next step is actual driv- ing on the range. The range is located on the parking lot of the Bobcat Stadium. It is made up of simulated city streets and in- cludes various exercises de- signed to test the driver ' s skill at maneuvering a vehicle. The final step, on-the-street driving, allows students to drive in traffic under actual con- ditions After completiton of the en- tire program, students 16 years old and older are eligible to take the driver test to qualify for an operator ' s license. A language lab is available to aid students with spoken lan- guages. Languages include French I, II, III, German I, II, Latin I, II, III, Spanish I, II, III, and IV. French I deals v ith the basic vocabulary of idiomatic French and grammar needed for the understanding, speaking, read- ing, and writing of simple con- versations. The two latter courses are extensions of the first course. Emphasis is on understand- ing spoken German and reading and writing are introduced after students are familiar with the fundamental sounds of the lan- guage. German II is an indepth study of the skills learned in German I. Grammar is emphasized in Latin courses. Reading from ancient Greek and Roman au- thors is introduced in Latin II. Latin III is primarily reading from prose, poetry, and letters. Spanish is the only language course that is railed. Spanish I teaches basic vocabulary and idiomatic expressions. It looks like an ordinary classroom with a few extra tables and typewriters. Who would ever guess by just look- ing at it that that little room contains the Journalism I and II classes, the Campus Corral staff and the Westerner staff. This room also contains Ed Cole, publications sponsor, journalism teacher, and the man who makes announce- ments in the morning. Also in Emerson is located the darkroom maintained by the publications department and used by the photographers. Journalism I covers most as- pects of journalism in one course. The study includes news stories, feature stories, editorials, copyreading, proof- reading, and newspaper make- up. The second journalism course is an extension of the first course and primarily a labora- tory course in which students are responsible for much of the writing of the Campus Corral, the student newspaper. The Campus Corral is financed through advertising. Students interested in this field are al- lowed to sell advertising. The yearbook, the Western- er, is planned, written, and edited entirely by the staff. The yearbook is also partially sus- tained by advertising. And that is what goes on in that one little room. Her name is Marila Gurgel and she is from Americana, Sao Paulo, Brazil. Her American sisters for the year were seniors Kim and Kay Sherrill. As Brazil is below the equa- tor, the seasons are reversed and Marila had to become ac- customed to West Texas weather, but she didn ' t mind because she fulfilled one of her dreams when she saw her very first snow while living in San Angelo. Marila played an active part in Chorale, Bobcat Boosters, Student Council, and American Field Service during her year at Central. In addition to learning more about the English lan- guage, Marila also took German. 122 MARILA GURGEL (opposite page, above), Central ' s foreign exchange student, smiles as she accepts her senior ring. With her American sisters (below), Kim and Kay Sherrill, Marila gets in the Christmas spirit by wrapping gifts. At the Lyndon B. Johnson Library (this page, left), Marila and her boyfriend from Brazil talk during his visit to the United States. MARILA (above right) gets her TB test. Marila with her American family (right) talks with Luci Johnson Nugent in the LBJ Library. 123 jim glossbrenn selected 1972 teacher-of-the-year From a student ' s point of view, iVIr. Glossbrenner has opened a new era in teaching. His ability to waken interests and kindle enthusiasm has proved to be successful in stim- ulating the pupil ' s pursuit of knowledge. His versatile lesson plans in English and speech have inspired students to strive for higher goals and ideals. This dedication and devotion combined with an eagerness to suggest rather than dogmatize has also motivated his listeners to teach themselves. He is able to make the best moral im- pressions and excite interest by giving the clearest, fullest and most accurate instructions. Through these means, Mr. Glossbrenner creates a genuine desire to develop the potential that lies within us all; conse- quently, a young person chal- lenges his current character and strives to be his best self. How could one go wrong with such a fine example as Mr. Glossbrenner to follow? As Ar- mand J. Gerson explains, The most potent of all indirect influ- ences in the development of our citizenry is the influence of a good teacher. 124 TEACHER OF THE YEAR (opposite page, above right) Jim Glossbrenner, in a pen- sive mood, makes out a lesson plan. Teaching an English III class, (below left) Glossbrenner lectures on a novel. The speech and English teacher (below right) surprised students and faculty alike by riding a motor bike to school. Glossbren- ner (this page, above left) grades papers. In English class, Glossbrenner achieves a comfortable, although not model, position for lecturing. Glossbrenner, behind a long line of books, finds them helpful in digging up resource material for his classes. 125 mr. and miss chs 126 J most ambitious - 127 most beautiful and most handsome 128 best personality iMl)!iiMi;:ua i , i . i|| 129 senior favorites 130 L junior favorites 131 sophomore favorites J ruth rawls runner-up for teacher of the year MRS. Every game played on the turf of San Angelo Stadium re- sulted in an Orange victory. And every game played out of town ended in defeat for the Centralites. The Cats opened the season with great promise, winning over Dallas Bryan Adams 25- 22 and Fort Worth Arlington Heights, 29-7. But the out-of- town hex prevailed as the Gal- veston Ball Tornadoes won handily on a rainy field, 35-6. Then came District 5-4A play, and a rousing 35-20 victory over the Cooper Cougars, eventual district champions. Against the Midland Lee Rebels, the Orange didn ' t score until the third quarter, but went on to win handily, 14-3. The out-of-town hex again became apparent as the Odes- sa High Bronchos squeaked out an upset 26-22 triumph. But the following week the Bobcats returned to their home field for a 41-28 Homecoming victory over the Midland High Bull- dogs. In what proved to be the de- cisive game of the season, the Abilene Eagles doused San An- gelo ' s hopes for a district title, 40-7. Then, in the annual show- down with Permian, Mojo again prevailed, 14-0. Although eliminated from district competition, the Bob- cats bounced back for a sea- son finale victory over the hap- less Big Spring Steers, 55-21. mj .. The Bobcats ' total season record for the five years La- Grasta was head coach was 32-17-2. The San Angelo School Board spent some time in se- lecting a replacement for La- Grasta. Finally they arrived at a decision, Smitty Hill. Coach Hill brought with him an impressive record โ€” 54-11-3. He has coached at Port Arthur ' s Thom- as Jefferson High School for 15 years with the last six spent in the head position. Maybe it ' s a number of things โ€” like going to the bonfire, pep rallies, and football games. Or maybe spirit is a feeling that makes all those things worthwhile. Whatever it is, it seemed to be dwindling at first and that prompt- ed head cheerleader Johnie Martin to plead over the public address system with the student body to attend pep rallies. Other factors also helped to excite spirit. Due to last year ' s misfortune with mas- cots. Dynamites VII and VIM were acquired to arouse spirit at pep rallies and games. And then District 5-4A awarded the student body a sportsmanship banner. Central and Odessa Permian tied for the honor. Later in the season the traditional bonfire began building spirit Thursday night before the Abilene High game. 254 MASCOTS (opposite page, left) Dynamite VII and the newest Bobcat, Dynamite VIII, add spirit at a pep rally. But the happiest smiling face belonged to Johnie Martin when she was crowned 1971 Homecoming Queen. Many exes attended the longest pep rally of the football season and school was dismissed early for the downtown parade. The game was something to smile about, too, since the Bobcats stomped the Midland High Bulldogs 41-28 and the halftime activities included presentation of royalty. Homecoming night was completed by a dance in the Central Gym featuring music by Cadillac. ย . i ..ยซ _ ,:j ' %, 259 DUCHESSES (right) Julie Chase and escort Jimmy Brashear, (be- low left) Tammy Biggs and Steve Hohman, and (below right) Martha Pool and Jimmy Lackey await the announcement of the identity of the 1971 Homecoming Queen. The carnival was the major money- making project for the junior class. On-campus clubs and or- ganizations sponsored booths and projects for the affair. It does snow here. It ' s hap- pened twice this year. The white stuff premiered as a mixture of ice, sleet, and snow. That was January 4, the second day after the Christmas holidays were over and for the first time in several years, students got an unexpected holiday. Then it happened again on January 31. Everyone looked outside and Halelujah! it was snowing . . . real, white, wet snow. It was snow- ing the kind of snow that makes good snowballs and is perfect to surprise friends with. The streets were not considered slick or dangerous enough to warrant another school holiday, and in all probability the students enjoyed it more because it transformed the Central campus into a winter wonderland. Friendly snowball fights and snowmen began popping up everywhere. 265 MINI-BIKES (above) were a part of the pro- gram as sophomores campaigned for class officers.
