MILE TONES In May, 1958, San Angelo High School will graduate its last class. The plant then will be converted into Thomas A. Edison junior High, and the new San Angelo Central High School will become the center of secondary education in the city. Following are a few of the highlights in the long and colorful history of SAHS: 1915-16 1917 1922 1928 1931 1938 1948 1954 1956 1957 1958 1923 1929 1943 1919 1927 1938 1917-18 1941-45 ADMINISTRATION SUPERINTENDENTS PRINCIPALS 1905-40 - Felix E. Smith 1917-24 - W. A. Pile 1940-52 - Bryan Dickson 1924-27 C. C. Cabaniss 1952- - G. B. Wadzeck 1927-28 E. L. Nunnally 1928-40 C. H. Kenley 1940-44 Iohn Bowntree 1944-53 John L. Bishop 1953- PLANT New plant erected at 217 N. Oakes at cost of S68,046. Top four grades Q8, 9, 10, 111 occupied new building. Minton L. Whi te Cemetery across N. Oakes from main building purchased by school board bodies ex humed and reburied in Fairmount, and a football stadium and track erected on the site. This home of SAHS athletic teams soon became famous over Texas as the Cemetery Gridiron. Vocational and cafeteria wing added to main building. Gymnasium erected. New athletic plant known as Bobcat Stadiumi' built on Pulliam St. site. Old San Angelo College building annexed to high school and became known as the Annex. Bond issue of 354,500,000 approved by taxpayers, with provision for new high school plant included. New S450,000 San Angelo Stadium dedicated in Southwest San Angelo. Groundbreaking ceremony held at site of new high school. San Angelo Central High School, built and equipped at a cost of S3,064,780, formally accepted by board. Plant comprises 11 buildings located on a 30-acre campus. ATHLETICS 'A' Association organized. Name of SAHS athletic teams changed from Westerners to Bobcats as a gesture of affection for Coach Claude Kellum, a graduate of San Marcos State Teachers College, whose athletic teams are still known as Bobcats. In their first game as Bobcats, the SAHS football team defeated Brownwood 25 to 0. Bobcats coached by Bill Bissett won state track championship. Bobcats coached by Iewell Wallace won state football championship. OTHER ACTIVITIES First edition of the NVesterner, school yearbook, published. SAHS play, Suppressed Desires, won state meet. First edition of the Campus Corral, school newspaper, published. IN MEMORIAM Six ex-students gave their lives in World War I. Fifty ex-students gave their lives in World War II.
