NEW SAN ANGELO HIGH SCHOOL On Ianuary 3, 1957, the new San Angelo High School became more than a sheaf of architect's draw- ings. For on that date ground-breaking ceremonies at the site of the new plant officially inaugurated actual construction. The event culminated years of effort by the school board and administration, and marked a significant milestone in the educational history of San Angelo. i s f aircte w - H Fifi ' , F Examining the specially decorated scoop are David Connally and Jimmy Leavell. And most of the 10,000 spectators on hand came away well pleased with the 26 to 14 defeat which was pasted on the Arlington Heights CFort Worthl Yellow Iackets. Among those who weren't so happy were approximately 600 Yellow Iacket fans who attended the game. Most came by special train - and it was a long ride home. The game was actually more lop- sided than the score indicates. The Bob- cats were hammering away on the Ar- lington Heights half-yard line with sec- ond down coming up when the tussle ended. Norman Marshall accounted for two of the Bobcat touchdowns, one on a brilliant 80-yard punt return. SAN ANGELO 32, LUFKIN 14 The Bobcats travelled to the deep piny woods to meet the Lufkin Panthers the night of Friday, October 5, and came away with a convincing 32 to 14 victory. Lufkin boasted a touted passer in the person of Ronnie Durham, but re- peated interceptions by an alert Bobcat secondary deflated the Panther threat. San Angelo rolled to a staggering 385 yards overland, mostly off the 'T', and ran up a comfortable 19-point lead be- fore Lufkin threatened. Dividing scoring honors were Phil Lane and lack Thompson, each of whom racked up two touchdowns. One of the scores by Thompson came on a thrilling 47-yard run. The fifth and final San Angelo touch- down was put on the scoreboard by Ierry Martin. Spearheading the San Angelo de- fense were Kenneth English, Dick Iohn- ston, Billy Pierce, Brian Barber, Don Harvey, David Ward, and Kenneth and Marcus Milliken. SAN ANGELO 54, HARLANDALE 13 Almost everybody got into the scor- ing act as the Bobcats routed the Har- landale iSan Antoniol Indians, 54 to 13, in San Angelo Stadium October 12. Phil Lane and Iohnny Tennis ac- counted for two each of the Bobcat six- counts. Scoring the remainder were Iack Thompson, Bobby Majors, Iohn Arthur Willis and Iohn Barnes. Using spread formation plays liberal- ly, Lane completely befuddled the Har- landale eleven as he repeatedly went for long gains. The Bobcats were without the serv- ices of Norman Marshall and Dick Iohn- ston, who were sidelined by injuries. However, Buddy Stapp proved a cap- able stand-in for Marshall in the place- kicking department, successfully con- verting on six of six attempts. Scoring Harlandale's tw o touch- downs were Charles Greenwald, and Fred Bradley on a pass from Grubbs. San Angelo racked up 17 first downs to three by Sunset, and powered to 195 yards rushing to a meager seven for the Bisons. In addition, the Bobcats completed five passes for a 49-yard net, while holding the Dallas visitors to exactly zero in the aerial department. It was Iack Thompson, junior full- back, who sparked the San Angelo at- tack. Thompson carried 25 times for a four-yard average, far and away ahead of any other back on the field. Thompson scored one Bobcat touch- down on a plunge from the two-yard stripe. The other was tallied by Phil Lane from eight yards away. It was a hard fought and evenly matched contest, with the San Ange- loans racking up 186 yards net over- land to 173 by Odessa. However, the Bobcats completed 3 of 7 passes for an additional 48 yards, while the Broncs were unsuccessful in five aerial at- tempts. Dick Stice scored for Odessa early in the first period when he took a delayed pitchout and rambled 39 yards to pay dirt. The Bobcats came back and drove 54 yards in 14 plays, with lack Thompson cracking over from the one. Key play of the drive was a fourth-down 18-yard scamper by Ierry Martin, who took the ball in deep punt formation and com- pletely baffled the defending Bronchos. San Angelo iced the game with a second touchdown, which was tallied by Phil Lane from the one. The drive covered 50 yards and was negotiated in 14 plays. Although the Bulldogs managed o negotiate 147 yards overland, the San An- elo line rose to the heights when the chips ere down. And Lane was magnificent as e called and successfully executed fourth- own plays from scrimmage in midfield that aught the Bulldogs napping and kept Bob- at offensive drives alive. The game was unreeled before a sparse homecoming crowd that braved rain and cold to witness the Orange and Blue triumph. But the weather didn't slow the Bobcat of- fense as Norman Marshall scored two touch- downs, one on a pass from Phil Lane, and lack Thompson, Iohn Arthur Willis, Iohnny Tennis and Bobby Majors chipped in one each. To cap the night's activities, Thomp- son tackled a Big Spring ball carrier behind his own goal line to give San Angelo a safe- ty, Marshall kicked four extra points, and Buddy Stapp one. The Bobcats capitalized on Steer miscues to hold the Big Spring yardage overland to a meager 85, while rolling to a net 303. Again it was Glynn Gregory, all-state and all-American if there ever was one, who dashed San Angelo's hopes. Gregory tallied two of Abilene's touchdowns and successfully con- verted on two of three attempts to personally account for 14 of the Eagles' points. The entire Bobcat line covered itself with glory as Brian Barber, Don Harvey, Marcus Milliken, David Ward, Dick Iohnston, Kenneth English, and Kenneth Milliken fought the Eagles to a standstill.
