To the country of the Conchos came the rumbling covered wagons ' S Like slow winding trains of destiny, across the westward Bearing rnuskets, household treasures, iron pots, and earthern flagons, Bearing all the worldly holdings of the Texas pioneers. To the great gray Pecos country, to the valleys in the sunlight, To the edge of Mexico the long processions made their way. Here were earth's own children, come to claim an ancient birthright- Land and sustenance and labor. Homes to cherish all their days. But against the far horizon stood a silhouette, an ornen: A Comanche's feather headdress rose from every cliff and scar. Soon the coyote's wail was silenced in the war cry of the foemen, And the paleface alternated every other task with war. A In the first tall prairie schooners with their sail-like covers blowing Was there any who foresaw himself as lord of a domain? Shepherd kings and cattle barons-there was little way of knowing Which was which among the youths in any dusty train. Yet their great dun flocks would one day keep the looms of Boston humming: Texas wool would go to Bristol, Bangor, and Mackenzie Bay. And up to the northern markets soon great longhorn herds came bawling Up the trails from pasture lands a thousand miles away. Even now with derricks marching up across an unfenced empire. Even now with oil field flares that burn upon the barren hills, One can find nothing as lovely as the cowboy's lonely campfire, Or the night songs of the herders that the darkness never stills. Should the country of the Conchos and the great gray Pecos ranges Lose the most romantic figure on the g eat American stage- Lose to smokestacks and to cities and to s ow and stealthy changes All the color and the drama from the vivid western page. There would yet be on each native son the rugged frontier branding Mark of pioneering forebearse-the proud stamp of breed Ever shall he go forth proudly, tall of spirit, bronzed, Bearing traits that mark him TEXAN even at the ends of -Grace Gaddis . 4' W 5 ' if 'fgagl . .. :iii : it T, S T , . iff'1 .t . .
