Dean Dalton Cope Jlflamy .fee Jfffcdfsszly James Keaiing Foreword SHORT months ago, San Angelo High School was evaluated . And as a guide to the score or more of visiting educators who did the evaluating, a philosophy of the school was compiled. This philosophy represents the aggregate thinking of the entire faculty of San Angelo High School and many of its students. It is a master plan that governs all educational pro- cesses which themselves are a part of the school. It seeks to answer many questions, most of which are beyond the scope of the school's yearbook. But one query emerges as the key to all, and the 1951 Westerner re- presents the staffs answer to that question: What educational road are we travelling and where are we going? IOANNE CARR. Emron VIVIEN CLEMONS, BUSINESS MANAGER 7 X 'et L L mt mafia ian IF this generation of Americans has learned any one hard, bitter lesson, it is this: Freedom is a luxury that comes dear: once it is won, continued possession of that freedom comes even dearer. In the past decade, thousands of San Angelo High School graduates have joined other Americans in the war of survival of the Democracies against dictatorship and tyranny. Many have made the supreme sacrifice. But today an even greater menace clouds the world of tree men. Once more, SAHS students and alumni are being called upon to help defend their country in an- 'tther critical hour oi peril. To you loyal sons and daughters of SAHS, we say: God bless you. and God speed you home. And to you. wherever you may be-Korea or Kansas City-we dedi- cate 'the 1951 Westerner. THE 1951 WESTERNER STAFF or THE SAN ANGELO PUBLIC SCHOOLS THE purpose of public school education is to provide for every youth, regardless of his ability, his environment, or his race, the opportunity to develop to his maximum capacity, physically, mentally, socially, economically, morally, and spiritually, to the end that he may be a well-adjusted member of our democratic society, capable and desirous of making a positive contribution to that society. The curriculm should place emphasis upon the whole child and his problems of living rather than upon subject matter alone. It should provide a student activity program to promote desirable attitudes, appreciations, and ideals in addition to knowledge, habits, and skills. In all grades, it should offer a liberal selection of e-xperiences which are interesting now but whose major value will be realized in adult life. On the upper level the student, guided by sympathetic counselling should be free to select the curriculm best suited to his personal needs and future plans. ' Methods of instruction should place emphasis on individual differences rather than on group conformity and should be democratic in procedure. Instruction should set up definite goals that the student can understand and accept: it should train him to think for himself and should stimulate his ambition to develop his native abilities. It should help the student to understand his place in a democratic society and to prepare himself to meet changing conditions. The school should provide a staff of well trained, efficient instructors and counsellors who take pride in their profession and observe its ethics: who staunchly support the funda- mental principles of democracy: who possess both integrity of character and positive religious conviction: and who have a sympathetic understanding of youth and its problems. Staff mem- bers should possess personalities that will enable them to meet their own problems with in- telligence, energy, che-erfulness, and enthusiasm. The school should provide the faculty with opportunity and encouragement for continous professional growth. 5 The school plant should be adequate both in size and equipment for carrying out the total school program. It should be well cared for and attractive in appearance: it should be so designed and operated as to invite its free use by the students, the faculty, and the commu- nity, particularly by organizations interested in the Welfare of youth-with a view to an im- proved cooperative program of education. The administration should formulate policies based on recommendations made by the administrative head in cooperation with his staff and authorized by the board of education: it should sponsor a type of supervision in which programs and procedures are determined cooper- tively. fwmvw-mwvmww ff '7he Selma! We had dreamed about it for a long time. but now we had our senior rings to prove it. Vigorous campaigning began at once for our officers. Speeches, mottos, and posters urged everyone to elect the best qualified. We don't think the campaign could have been better, because look who we got: Bob Nickel, president. Ierre Sykes, vice-president. loyce Matthews, secretary-treasurer. Tonya Woullard, reporter. . The senior banquet was held at the St. Angelus Hotel on April 16. We had a program befitting only seniors. Ierre Sykes read the class prophecy. Rita Tucker did a good job on it. Our Hearts Were Young and Gay was the title of the senior play. A large majority of the student body applauded the play and hailed it as a huge success. Then came our day-Kid Day. Boys' Ranch was the scene of swimming and all. The long awaited baccalaureate finally came- on May 20. Commencement on May 22 was followed by a big dance. Oh, how we danced! The time did pass fast. We always looked forward to our senior year. Now we'll always look back on it. But we know that we sang our school song the loudest, cheered the longest, passed more courses without studying, con- sumed more Cokes, and were the best darn bunch to ever walk away from SAHS. Our officers were elected among all the proper cheers and throat cut- tings. We have some good ones too! Earnestine Woodward president. Paul Hudman, vice-president. Ioan Sellers, secretary-treasurer. Fred Northcutt, reporter. The junior prom was our big affair. We worked hard along with our sponsor, Duwaine Hughes. The prom was held in the Cactus Hotel Ballroom on March 31. To be truthful, it was the best, prettiest, and biggest dance ever held there. Next year we'll be the seniors. This year's seniors thought they hung the moon, but we have some ideas of our own now. YQUNG, LULALIA aaa in Review POOR little sophomores! That's what we were. Only students in our shoes could know how we felt the first days with everyone glaring at us. We got lost hundreds of times. It wasn't long until the initiations came along. The torture we went through was terrible! But what could we do about it? We were only sopho- mores. The main item of importance to us was the election of class officers. We didn't do too much campaigning, because we still didn't have much to say around dear SAHS, but we are satisfied with 'the results. Here they are: Dale Bates, president. Marilyn Abbott, vice-president. Stella Bolding, secretary-treasurer. Marilyn McManus, reporter. Next year we will be just as mean to the sophomores as the others were to us, naturally. We don't care. We will be juniors. x , .
