A script detailing events and activities of the year in San Angelo High School . . Bettie Todd, Editor Bobbye Perry, Bus. Mgr. Ed B. Cole, Adviser 7 4e SpMd 0 7U Book ant to catch the gleam of a star? The Westerner staff did. So in casting about for someone, or some- thing, to catch the spirit of the 1949 Westerner, what could be more natural than a glance in the direction of lovely, Texas-born Ann Sheridan? With the best of wishes to San Angelo High School, its faculty and students. Miss Sheridan, through her studio, Warner Bros., forwarded the picture on the opposite page especially for publication in the 1949 Westerner. It took just one glance to convince staff members that if any picture could adequately portray the spirit of the ' 49 Westerner — or of any book — this is it! We hope you like it as much as we do! THE 1949 WESTERNER STAFF H wma BECAUSE.... of his sincere, friendly interest in each and every student in San An- gelo High School . . . of his willingness to give unstint- ingly of time and effort in further- ing any project for the good of the school and its people . . . of his remarkably sympathetic un- derstanding of the problems that beset San Angelo High School stu- dents . . . of the expert counsel and guid- ance, freely given, that so often held the key to a solution of these problems . . . THE 1949 WESTERNER STAFF dedicates the 1949 edition of the Westerner to Harry R. Fahren- bruch, Boys Counselor. Staffers Hill, Thomson, Kreaoer, Brashears, Fairbanks and Editor Todd delve into scores of annuals in search of that nebulous something called an idea as work on the 1949 Westerner gets under way , . . An Idea.... A Theme.... Sponsor Cole and Editor Todd spend furthe hours developing that nebulous idea into i theme .... As the book takes shape literally thousands ol pictures are sifted periodically Thousands Of Pictures.... Of Course, A Paste Pot.... Staffers Fairbanks and Hill go into action with that old standby of any publications office, the paste pot .... A Business Staff,.,. . . . with the persistence of a tax collector . . . A Typewriter.... And someone to punch the keys . . Plus generous portions of blood, sweat and tears . . . and you have your 1949 Wedebn i, Okay — you ' ve bought your ticket and rtiaybe a sack of popcorn! The first student body president was elected by the entire school from popular nominations. Richard Palm- er won the election after a close race with Donald Goldston. Other officers for the new organi- zation were chosen by the council itself. They included Dave Marshall, vice president; and Francis Cox, secretary. Lanis Gross and Mrs. George Todd served as sponsors to the group. The 32 council members drafted a constitution, sponsored the daily scripture reading, pub- lished the student directory, and sent four delegates to the state convention of student councils in El Paso. The council also studied the honor system, presided at assemblies and sponsored the Sock Hop, an all-school dance in the gym. MEMBERS Adrian Anderson, Gerald Baker, Barbara Borger, Betsy Bell, R. B. THE KITTENS The scrappy aggregation known as the Kitten football team played a full season with the B teams of other 3-AA con- tenders. Several of the outstanding play- ers won reserve letters from the Bobcats as well as gaining valuable experience with the Kittens. Coach Jack Dillon in- structed the following players: John Donaldson, Harold Hardy, Gary Sander- ford, Clarence Barrett, Paul Matheny, Jimmy Joe Russell, Buddy Goode, Tommy Robinson, Ted Babb, Jerry Williams, For- rest Mayo, Claude Tatum, James Durden, Lindy Vautrain, Donald Baker, George Kendall, Gerald Boykin, Rayburn Pevoto, Marlin Kahns, Jerry Sykes, Loren Reed, Jack Broome, Ray Barrett, Joel Howerton, Joe Parker, Bob Babb, Bob Graham, Billy Cook, David Butler, Jack Purcell, Howell Whitsitt, George Cantrell, Earle English, John Harris, Tommy Nasworthy, Gene Staas, Alton Sargent, Carl Browder, and Rusty Seitz. Unscrambling after a play — Barrett comes into the game Donaldson, Boykin, and Russell reconnoiter. , Down he goes — Donaldson, Sykes, and Whitsitt add some more yardage to the Kitten total. The extra point and the score is 7-0 — Kendall gets away a high one to pile up another all-important point. Kittens in action — Sanderford with Boykin ' s help forges ahead for a first down. The harrowing moment — the ball hurtles toward the basket — a gasp — and it ' s in The Bobcat cagers kept the winter sports reel full of thrills and high sportsmanship. For the third year in a row the Cats went to district play-off before defeat. In every game the spirit of a hard-playing team and a conscientious coach showed it- self. There Pat was elected historian of the state organi- zation and San Angelo was named the con- vention city for 1950. LOUIS Meet Me In St. Louis, Louie; meet me at the fair . This line of lyrics from the popular song might well have been the theme of the 1949 senior play. And it was — for the scene was St. Louis in 1903 before the World ' s Fair. The cast had a gay time munching chicken legs and fudge and swallowing chicken hearts. They also doused each other with water and threw the cat, Lady Babbie, around. Four sisters of the Smith family were the main plotters in the plot and the boy friends of the two older sisters furnish the romantic touch. Trouble came in the form of a move to New York just as the Fair was start- ing. Therefore enter the dummy, the water bombs and the thrown cat. P. S. They won out and stayed in St. Louis. The picture was made, however, and turned out well. As the year has progressed the whole student body has learned to know and love Miss Cowles. She has given special talks for home rooms. She has been endlessly patient with the questions of countless reporters and just interested Texans. And we have learned to understand her without an inter- preter!
