With just a little sorrow too We think of all the fun we've had, And leave the old times for the new. Two years ago-our sophomore year- Remember how we used to gaze With timid eyes, so wonderingly At grown-up Seniors' worldly Ways? Then came our bolder junior year. We cherred our football team to State. The Iunior Prom left memories- We still thought Seniors were first-rate At last we gained our Senior name. We had our Banquet, Kid-Day, too: We had such fun those last few weeks! But graduation left us blue. If, years from now, we took the pains To trace the lives of Ange1o's best, We'd find the Class of '45 Would still be leading all the rest! ABBOTT, LAMOINE G.A.A. '45, Pep Squad '43. Hay, a member of our .1945 senior class, died last December 14, '1944, but he is still alive in our' thoughts, and his cheerful smile and ever-ready hello will never be forgotten. H. P. had many various activities and honors conferred upon him during his sixteen years. On our own CAMPUS CORRAL he was a member of the Editorial Staff: this fall he was alter- nate drum major of theBobcat Band, having played with this organization for five years. Among other things he was a mem- ber of the baton club. H. P.'s character and ability may be seen in that he was one of the youngest boys in the Concho Valley Boy Scout Council to rate the Eagle rank. .... .... . . . . . . . . Good luck to you! Hi there, Iuniors! Your year is soon due. But here we are, little Sophs, infants, they say, Who don't even know the time of day. That may be true but you just don't know, How fast little Sophomores really can grow. We've taken your teasing and all your jokes: We've given you chewing gum and bought you cokes, But we know there will come a time When a set of new Sophs are made to mind. H We've never made those between-the-halves A's, Nor learned how to march three different ways: We've never witnessed a Kid Day or Prom, And don't even know where Caesar came from. But we managed to get through this year all right, And hope to continue without a fight. For we know the time surely will come, When we can rightfully have OUR fum: But anyway, Seniors, we bid you good cheer, For we're still waiting for our big ygearl Y Io-Io Nowell CHARLES ABBOTT I' 3 LYNN ABBOTT ' k , DEAN ADAMS ff, I f B' ew. The following 1S the Winning speech that won May first place atfer five years of competitzon in ,Speech contests. . By IOHN NESBIT ' I -Six hundred and forty-four years ago an Italian traveler was thrown into jail in Genoa, and to pass the time he. wrote a book. His name was MARCO POLO and his book about China was so exciting that it started a world move- Irgegit of exploration and led to the discovery of America. A book written in 1 on. Two hundred and sixty-seven years ago another man went to prison, in London, England. He too wrote a book to keep from going mad in the silence of his cell. His name was IOHN BUNYAN, the book was PILGRIM'S PROGRESS, End after the BIBLE, it has sold more copies than any other book ever penned y man. On a beautiful spring morning just 20 years ago, to la little river town in Bavaria, they brought another prisoner, tossed him into a cell and forgot about him. He too decided to write a book. Marco Polo had told how he loved China, Bunyan had told how he loved Christianity, so this man decided to tell how he hated everything. He was a thin grey faced radical with dirty hair. His name? ADOLPH HITLER, his book, MEIN KAMPF. While we were watching the Washington baseball club win the series: or nominating Calvin Coolidge for President: and winning the 1924 Olympics: and loaning Germany a couple of hundred million dollars to help it back to its feet: the thin man in his jail cell went on writing the book. First Germany must conquer Europe for no nation on earth hold a square yard of territory by any right derived from heaven. Strength alone constitutes the right to possess. - It didn't concern us did it? While we were working up the Dawes Peace Plan that year, the thin man was writing: ':'Labor unions are to be abolished, strikes are to be forbidden, wages will be frozen, and workmen forbidden to look for or even accept better jobs. Well, it didn't concern us, did it? The next year a few Americans read the book, and saw that it had some- thing init for us after all. Something terse, concise, complete. lust one sentence: Democracy in the West today is a monstrosity of filth. In the years that followed, this clumsily thought-out book became the bible of the Nazi World: its author became its god. Then, paragraph by paragraph, line by line, Hitler began to make his book come true. He attacked France exactly as he said: pulled the wool over England's eyes: and on schedule, he tore apart the old World. But he was talking about destroying them, not us wasn't he? Then suddenly, he was talking about destroying us. From a dozen official documents can be drawn the plan for America. Americans behave like clumsy boys, he wrote, the American is no soldier. The inferiority and decadence of this allegedly new world is evident in its military inefficiency. . Concerns us doesn't it? Our superior products will be sold at very low prices throughout the world and will cause the United States to have not sever million but thirty million, forty million unemployed. It didn't apply to us. It didn't apply to you, did it? Unless you are the man with scrap metal rusting in your garage because it was too much trouble to get it to the salvage drive. Unless you are the man who doesn't buy bonds because in a democracy no one makes you buy bonds. This is the man Hitler sincerely believes you are. If he were right, the last chapters of MEIN KAMPF would be written in Berlin and not in Washington or London. But since you are not that man, in this book of theirs, the most tragic book known to all history of the human heart, the final chapter will be written by us. For A.dolph Hitler, when he dreamed it all up that-summer in 1924, proud to be writing his book in the cell of a jail, proucll to be among those who changed history from behind barred windows, quite overlooked one of the men who also grew famous for such a prison task. He quite overlooked the fact that 110 ears before he entered that cell in Baveria to write MEIN KAMPF, an Ameifican, in a cell, likewise did some writing. In Fort McHenry was imprisoned Frances Scott Key, and the last four lines of his contribution to literature go: And conquer we must, when our cause it is just And this be our motto, 'In God is our Trust.' And the Star Spangled Banner, in triumph shall wave O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave. f SPQRTS 1- . . . f, Q bf 1 QQQ X J Qgqf N. . , 5 ,V pl XX K, 6 U IK C X A L QU N N P K X jk Q KJ, , xy-f 2 ' I4 K P ,pts IT' A N N, X A D f N , 5 , -,Z A Football- 1944 1944 SAN ANGELO BOBCATS-STATE SEMI-FINALISTS I 1944 TEXAS STATE SEMI-FINALISTS Taking up where they left off last year. the Bobcats completed the 1944 season with only two setbacks.
