Q ' X 3 K, .4 5 f f' ,uf 19 7.- SENIGR PLAY Cn Friday, December 13, to a rainfwashed twelve hundred, the largest audif ence on record for a senior play, the 1941 class presented their annual play, Charles Quimby Burdette's L'Gnce in a Lifetime. This saga of Konrad, a gypsy boy, adopted by white parents, was well received. The romantic Romany element- is introduced when a band of gypsies makes its entrance. The Daya and the Daro, played by Dorothy Gibson and Sim Christy, head the group. Among the more prominent members are their three attractive daughters, Zara, Carmena, and Katinka, played by Ruth Ruiz, Sal Hall, and June Green, and the jealous lover, Stan, played by Hudson Russell. The conflict of two elements in the mind of Konrad, Jon Miller, causes ten' sion and suspense. The first is his home life with his foster parents, Jeff and Emily Ross, played by Bill Teller and Louise Hillyer, and the companionship of the beautif ful niece of the Rosses, Laurie York, portrayed by Martha Gill. The other element is her inherited craving of adventure, and an infatuation for the vivacious and flirtaf tious gypsy, Zara. Mr. Dinsmore, Paul Wilson, by proposing to Laurie helps Stan, who loves Zara, create conflicting love interests. Hilarious comedy was furnished by Mary Jordan and Ernest Wilbanks, in portraying Stella, the maid, and Rodney, the halffwit. A large portion of credit for the success of the evening goes to Charlene Andrews, costume and set designer, and Sidney Hayes, stage manager. May Hemphill was publicity agent, and Louise Parrot, Anita Hanson, Anna Alexander, Juanita McElhaney, and Edwardine Russell constituted the makefup crew. ONEACT PLAYS Miss Mary E. Compton, Director Spreading the News, the official entry of S. A. H. S. in the District Meet, made quite a showing. It began its long and illustrious series of performances on the night of March 13 in the college auditorium, where it was presented with two other plays, Two Potatoes for Mary, a student production, and 'LNight Falls on Spain. The audience, given the opportunity of voicing their preference for the play to represent San Angelo in the district meet, chose Spreading the News. San Angelo placed first at the district meet, and Marylou Godbehere tied with Buelah johnson of Lakeview for first in individual acting for girls. At the Regional Meet in Abilene, San Angelo again swept the slate by receiving first by a unanimous decision of three judges. Marylou Godbehere won first for girls in indi' vidual acting, with Sim Christy placing second for boys. And on to Austin! The San Angelo delegation, the laregst cast at the Uni' versity lnterscholastic Meet, arrived in good spirits which they were able to maintain even after the judge's decision was given, and Spreading the News was not among the top three. One of eight of more than six hundred plays is not so bad. Mary' lou, whose winning performances had practically became a tradition, was presented a gold medal for being selected a member of the allfstar cast. Mary jordan and jon Miller received honorable mention. Gthers in the cast were Barbara Wallace, Jim Morgan, Enslie Oglesby, Norman Sturgis, Joe McKnight, Wood Butler, Ernest Wilbanks, and Bill Barton, stage manf ager. Wood was with the cast through the time of the Regional Meet, and Joe took his role in Austin. 41 eemwfz A , L , ZX M- ff -My .V V aww Q Q ' g:ez..sz,fm 7-we 1 5 fa, , Q 2 , 1 af , efsj 4 AMW' , MM, ff 4, 4: f ,, 1 M f f FOOTLIGHTERS Miss Mary Compton, Sponsor FouNDED: 1934 COLORS: Bright Blue and Silver Morro: Ars Gratia Artis Among the activities of the Footlighters were the three onefact plays which they sponsored on the night of March 13 in the college auditorium. In the fall the girls played tennis, aerial darts, deck tennis, baseball, and soccer. The fall intramural tennis tournament was won by Marie Snodgrass, first year matches, Maxine Culwell, second year matches, and Helen Marie Wohlford, third year. Winter weather drove the girls into the gym where they engaged in tumbling and volleyball. Spring, besides reviving the fall sports, brought with it goalfhi, horse shoes, and ropefjumping. GIRLS' HEALTH In the girls' health classes, held each Wednesday, the prevention and cure of diseases and the structure of the body were studied and the girls wrote themes based on the discussions. Each girl wrote a theme on the subject Increasing the Span of Life and entered this in the contest sponsored by the Women's Auxiliary of the State Medical Association of Texas. Blanche McKee's theme was judged the best and she was awarded the five dollar prize. In the posture contest, joy Wilson Flint was chosen as the girl having the best posture. I 1. TUMBLING TEAM UNIOR AND SENIOR TENNIS PLAYERS GIRLS' TENNIS HELEN MARIE WOHLF-ORD This year Helen Marie 'iWohlfy lettered for the second year. Last year she was an outstanding singles player, who lost to the district winnerg this year she prov' ed to be an outstanding doubles player, losing to the winner of the regional tournament. She will be remember' cd as a determined player, who is always upokerffacedn in a game and whose tennis is polished in every respect. After defeating Garner in their first match in the region, the doubles team lost to Peters Prairie. WILMA FAYE MQGLOTHLIN 1941 was the second year that Wilma Faye lettered in doubles. She is known far and wide for her hard drives. The pass word of her opponents has become Don't play the blonde's back hand. Quite different from her partner, Helen, she is always smiling while play' ing. Wohlford and McGlothlin did not play for individuf al glory, and their superior team work was responsible for their victories. TUTTA STUMBERG Tutta is an experienced player from last year, when she was a substitute. Representing San Angelo in the District Meet as the girls' singles player, she lost to the girl who later won first in the Regional Meet. Stumberg is one who will not give up until the last point has been played. She can match strokes with the best players and because of her good sportsmanship is a favorite among her opponents. JEAN GUTHRIE Guthrie, who had played tennis only eighteen months before this year, made the most improvement of any girl on the squad. jean, with her good brand of tennis, was a upinchfhitterv in singles and doubles. Although she knew that the odds were against her for making the district team, she continued her outstanding faithfulness. HELEN WHITFIELD In the invitation tournament Helen lost in the semi' finals in singles. One of the outstanding tennis players in high school, she stayed with the team and helped the three district players to be better by playing with them every afternoon. FRANCES SIMS Understanding, faithfulness, and skill in tennis made Miss Sims a perfect tennis coach. In victories her girls have had their share, and in the realm of sportsmanship they surpass. Whether in practice or matches she gives them the motto Sportsmanship, then Victory! Workf ing with them, playing with them, rejoicing with them, and pulling for them, Sims is admired not only by the girls she coaches but by the entire school. b . 5132. 1 , f IV . -V r ' N, 5 L. . , , 'X - H s 1, 4 ' A ' : -s,sg,f:1,,g,3. 3 yy 't M ,Q ' I I . f f- ' . Known throughout the state as an astute football mentor and as a builder of fine young manhood, Harry Taylor made a definite imprint on the minds of all the students who knew him. With a football team which fought on its heart alone and with a basketball squad that went to the finals in the Regional, Coach Taylor ended a ten year period of splendid service in San Angelo High. Coach Hervey Blue exhibited his ability this spring by turning out a track team that captured the District Tournament crown and won second in the Regional. While he was producing a champion track squad, Coach Blue also ably managed the boys' athletic activities following Mr. Taylor's resignation Mellow as an old pipe, Coach Blue is impossible to dislike. Amiable Charles Harless directed the Kitten football eleven in their search for gridiron experience last fall. Coach Harless' teaching duties were extended at the close of the football season, and the Coach was unable to finish the year with the boys. Webb, Coach San Angelo Highs tennis squad reversed itself exactly in the District 7 Meet this spring. Last year, Dewain Dallas and Emil Beck won their doubles matchg while Jack Hight won nothing. This season Jack was the big boy, having stormed his way through the list of opponentsg while Dewain and Emil dropped their district doubles crown to Ballinger. In the first match in Abilene, jack met Ray Clark of Cisco. Clark beat him, 6f0, in the first set, but the Angelo lad took the next set, 6f4. After nearly losing the third set, Jack snared it, 7f5. Moving into the finals, Jack Hight lost to Tommy Hill, semiffinalist in the state meet, in straight sets, 6f1, 6fO, 6f3. Prospects for the Bobcats' future tennis squads are shaping up. Bernard Bart' zen, coming up from Junior High, will be a tough nut to crack in a year or two. Louis Spellman and Sam Vines, reserve lettermen this year, will be here next spring, and Jack Hight, who will be unbeatable next season, acording to the victor of the Region 2 match, has two years of eligibility if he wishes to play for San Angelo High. - LETTERMEN - Emil Beck Dewain Dallas jack Hight Reserve Lettermen: Louis Spellman, Sim Christy, Sam Vines 1 1 fi' N, Q .X X x ii -Mfmc l . xx 5-xx?-A lv RA .S wyfgw, X.. T The Campus Corral staff has endeavored throughout the year 1940741 to act as proxy for a much needed auditorium by publishing a newspaper that has striven to unite the student body in democratic beliefs and actions, and to promote a school spirit unsurpassed by that of any other high school. Cofeditors, Harris Smith and Melba Kleitches, were responsible for seeing that the paper was put to bed, bifweekly, during the first semester. Harris had night' mares after bouts with the makcfup, and he added to the general campus activities with i'Perpetual Commotionf' Willa Wayne took over much of the makefup, with the assistance of Mildred Alice White, Dora Hagelstein, E. Barnes, and Jack Smith. Melba tried every journalistic tactic in writing editorials, feature stories, and news stories, and recorded scoops through the column, uCrchids and Cnionsf' The reporters that brought stories in alive were Charlene Andrews, Patricia Ann Bradbury, Estelle Mercer, Margey Young, Betty Jane Maxwell, Jean Guthrie, Helen Marie Wohlford, Louise Hillyer, Annette Smith, Valda Purviance, Billye Sue Young, Ann Wester, and Helen jean Stroman. Dowell Williams and James Simms, sports editors, furnished the sports lovers with an abundance of news about the Bobcats. Margaret Strain helped Ima Ruth Childs and Mary Proctor, circulation team, by making outstanding posters to advertise each issue. Margaret also reproduced several famous paintings and did originals for the paper. The financial end of the Corral was supported by an able advertising staff, with Rosa Lee Williams as manager and Mr. C. M. Franklyn as faculty adviser. This staff not only rivaled the prestige of the journalists, but often crowded out their most cherished gossip columns with two and three column spreads The salesmen were Iris Lovejoy, Betty Jean McCorkle, Gerald Huling, Juanita McMinn, Betty jo Duncan, Lida Nowell, .lim Morgan, Richard Cox, and G. C. Magruder. Acting as faithful chauffeurs for the salesmen were Cllie Lou Tippett, Bernard Akin, Billy Halamicek, and Charles Ann Walling. A. H. S. The staff expresses its appreciation to all who helped in the production of the yearbook, The cooperation of the CAMPUS CORRAL throughout the year and their financial aid were essential to the success of the WESTERNER. Especially does the staff appreciate the work of the sales force. Realizing the need for a school camera and other equipment for the offices of the CANIPUS CORRAL and the WESTERNER, the two staffs voted unanimously to put into a camera fund the money which had been set aside for the purchase of individual medals for staff members. - PRODUCTION STAFF - Evelyn Tyler ................
