During a third of a century which has been characterized in America by the great experiment of educating all classes, with many and varied educational theories proposed, Mr. Smith has taken the long view of education and has put first things first. The system he has builded from two small schools in 1905 to twelve in 1940 is recognized as ranking with the best in the state. Its former students fill places of honor and responsibility not only in this community but throughout the state and nation. We honor the man who with his philosophy of education, unfailing patience, quiet efficiency, and devotion to his task has been a guiding force in developing the ideals of the citizenship of this town. . DEBATE CLUB Miss Mary E. Compton, Coach Membership in the Debate Club is open to all pupils participating in debate activities in San Angelo High School. The purpose of the club is to train students to express their ideas clearly and forcefully and to consider both sides of a question. The ambition of everyone in the club is to be on the first team. During 19391940 the debaters attended several invitation tournaments in Abilene, Brownwood, and Wztccw. San Angelo was also host to a number of dehaters from neighboring communities. Out of seventyfthree interscholastic debates our teams won thirtyfone, lost twentyfeight, and participated in fourteen nonfclecision debates. The girls' team, Johnnie Mae MacNaughton and Melba Kleitches, won in the District Meet, but were eliminated in the Regional Meet at Abilene. The boys' team, John Harper and Bill Alexander, lost in the District Meet. The team alternates for the Meet were Estelle Mercer and Nat henderson. Two activities marked the social calendar of the Debate Club. The first was a banquet at the St. Angelus Hotel at which County Attorney Ralph Logan, a former San Angelo High School debater, was the principal speaker. The second was a skating party and picnic at the Civic Park to celebrate San Angeltfs victory in the District Meet. -- OFFICERS -4 -- john Harper . . ............. ....... Y THE WESTERNER STAFF It has been the sincere desire of The 1940 Westerner Staff to recreate for each student of the High School a complete picture of his career in the School. If we can call to his mind the days his fondest hopes were realized and the days his brightest visions were hampered, if we can make him give a joyous laugh and shed a sentimental tear, we shall feel that our work has had both purpose and result. We, the Staff, wish to thank those who have aided us and cooperated with us in the production of The 1940 Westerner. We offer our deep appreciation to The Campus Corral, to HolcombefBlanton Printery, to Southwestern Engraving Company, and especially to Miss Cora Seymour, whose constant aid, advice, capability, and understanding made possible this book. To those who go, as we do, to a new phase of life and to those who remain in the School to carry on the Westerner tradition, the Staff bids an affectionate farewell. Cowfeditor McDowell delved deep into his fertile brain for editorials and news stories and for his column ufizzfcologyf' Coedfcoeditor Daisy Henderson dished the dirt for the second year and turned the other point of her pen to the News RoundfUp, editorials, and news stories. Makefup editor Harris Smith with the aid of June Covington put in their proper places the contributions of kodak editor Robert Maginot, headline writer Charles Graham, feature editors Claudia White, Bette Logan, and Marjorie Wynn, society editor Viola Beth Hearn, and sports reporter J. W. Rice. The invaluable bloodhound reporters who kept their ears to the ground, their shoulders to the wheel ,and their noses to the grindstone were Delma Millican, Ruth Ann Matlock, Melba Kleitches, Dorothye Sutton, Betty Walling, Patty Wood, and Lillian Works. The longfsuffering girls who hacked out the noble efforts on the typewriter were Bettye Fuller, Elene Rickabaugh, and Sara Ellen Swift. Several of the staff were juniors, to them the departing senior members leave a tradition and an institution-something to build up and improve. Good luck! Highlights of the newspaper year were the football edition of the paperf f before the Sweetwater game, the annual field trip to HolcombefBlanton Printery to see how it's done, and the traditional spring picnic at Christoval. Bestfandflongestf remembered, however, will be the sweetly sarcastic notes from Paul and Chester of HolcombefBlanton's. Nobody escaped their mighty pen, although in most cases it was pencil. The Campus Corral is not a house divided against itself, but there is ufeudin' aplenty between the editorial and advertising staffs. Both groups claim that they are the more important to the paper's welfare. Gloria Fread, manager of the group, is the masterful executive type. Willa Wayne Withers, Patty Jane Maynard, and Tomasine Stanley try their feminine wilcs on downftown business houses, as they solicit ads. Betty McKenzie keeps her thumb on the pulse of the paper. She is circulation manager. Pictured on Obposite Page: Q11 The lowfdown on a campus couple, Q1 Dead line in a iiffy, C31 Feature editor 'White in action, f41 A brace of feature writers. Frank Dobie Chapter of the Quill and Scroll, the International Hon' orary Society for High School Journalists, was organized in San Angelo High School in April, 1939. The ten charter members were Eloise Beck, Bill Bradley, John Davf enport, Ella Marie Daviss, Tamea Henderson, Mary Ann Kenney, Hobart McDowell, Robert Massey, Jo Kathryn Schmidt, and Jeanne Trimble. The Quill and Scroll Society, which numbers many famous authors and journalists among its honorary members, was organized April 10, 1926, at the Uni' versity of Iowa. The founders, a group of journalism teachers, wished to use it as a form of recognition and reward for journalism students who met the four standards of scholarship: distinctive journalism work, recommendation by the journalism ad' viser, and approval by the membership executive of the society. Qualities especially stressed in selection of members of the Quill and Scroll are truth, the keynote of journalistic endeavor, initiative, the symbol of progress, opportunity, that made by selffeducation, leadership, the greatest need of the world, loyalty, the essence of wellfplaced trust, enlightenment, the background for culture, and friendship, the great bond of civilization. On May 10, 1940, seven new members were initiated into the Dobie Chapter in a special candleflighting ceremony. Officers for the year are Hobart McDowell, president, Tamea Henderson, vice president, Bette Logan, secretaryftreasurer, Patty Woods, reporter, Gloria Fread, social chairman. New members are Gloria Fread, Charles Graham, Viola Beth Hearn, Bette Logan, Betty Walling, Patty Woods, and Lillian Works. 49 -45 G 66,9 S395 ,....z:.4-.ev was My vw. Wheii a customer didn't patronize June Covington, she would accidently trip him, and then smiling sweetly, she would coo, 'LOh, pardon me! Bettye Fuller dominated the gate and highfpressured the public into record sales that won her the prize for selling the most linefups. f The vivacious Martha Gill exercised her vocal power and slayed the customers with her line about working her way through school. The reserved Jane Greene always managed to sell her share of the programs, aided principally by her golden looks and personality. Viola Beth Hearn drawled, Safay fpausej don't youfall fpausej wantfta buy fpausej a linefup fpausej ? Meanwhile, the customer had reached the fiftyfyard line. Sophisticated Tamea Henderson demanded, Hod do you do? Cawn't you, won't you buy a linefup? Refahlfly, now, you do need one! Bette Logan's fetching smile brought in the customers' nickels. Buy a linefup, mister. They're approved by GoodfHousekeeping, vowed Lucille Luckett. Ruth Mansfield used the same tactics on her customers that she uses on the boys of high school and college. Mary Stumberg guaranteed her linefups. lf the first one doesn't last, l'll gladly sell you another one! Anne Templeton merely held out her programs, and the customers came and got 'em! Marjorie Wynn may be small, but she helped to sell her linefups by rolling her large brown eyes. All the women customers flocked to buy their linefups from Harris Smith, manager of salesmen, when he flashed his bright smile at them. zmnmwmw 1 'ss -M esrz-wemwmmf b t.m-eww' ',x,.ze.1s...'a,. w:'s.aw' 4,2--iw M wmvemawvm . ..... ff, .v.. a wa... Since it was then too hot for strenuous activity, the girls had their choice of playing baseball, tennis, deck tennis, or aerial darts. The Intramural tennis tournament started the last of Sepf tember with Helen Marie Wohlford winning singles, and jean Favors and Wilmzt Faye McGlothing winning doubles. Soccer was the principal sport for the five classes in October and November, but tennis and baseball were continued. Tumbling was started before the Christmas holidays so that a Tumbling Team could be chosen to perform for the basketball games in January and February. The New Year introduced into the gym classes a new game called Goal Hi, which the girls played with enthusiasml By March the classes had skilled themf selves enough to go into the boys' gym and play basketball, a sport that has not been played by the girls' P. E. classes for several years. Beginners who were interested in tennis took up the fundamentals of tennis playing in April, while others played volleyball, aerial darts, or deck tennis, or pitched horse shoes. Play Day, May 11, finished up the work of the Physical Education classes for the year. Sports of various kind were featured for a whole day of activity. HEALTH CLASSES On Wednesdays the Physical Education classes met with Miss Sims for a course in health. Each term the girls handed in a theme written on the material gathered in the classes. An essay contest was sponsored by the Woman's Auxiliary of State Medical Association of Texas. The subject for the essay was How to Prevent Contagionf' Ruth Mae King won the 355.00 prize given by the organization for the best essay. The classes took up the study of good manners, correct posture, first aid, and the value of sunshine and fresh air. At the end of the year, the classes were divided into committees, each committee learning as much as possible about the safety units of San Angelo. ---- M...-I TOP ROW: Gloria Fread Bettye Winstead Anna Mae Lund Newana Gotchers Lewis Westbrook Helen Marie Wohlford Bettye Cowart Wanda Sue Dixon Maxine Montgomery SECOND ROW: Jay Dean Perry Adeola Crochet Jeanette Clements Claudia White Betty McKenzie 1 Ruth Ann Matlock lune Hudson Barbara Holland Elene Rickabaugh Wauree Logan Bobby O'Quinn Dorothy Crownover Neclra Gibson Captainsk Jean Stepp Ila Virginia Womble 'Yell Leaders- Mzmrihcl Ricker DRILL SQUAD THIRD ROW: Eunice Wilson Joy Monroe Irene Franklin Louise Young Rosa Lee Williams Marjorie Curry Helen McDaniel Justine Ramsey Sara Ellen Swift Elizabeth Chancellor Colene Foster Mary Hines Mary Lou Johnson Margey Young Evelyn Green Rebecca Herman FOURTH ROW: Ophelia Goodwin Cllie Lou Tippet Dorothy Roe Betty .lo Goodwin June Green Alleen McSpadden Louise Davis Mary McGee Anne Wester Jean Guthrie FRONT ROW: Vesta Chenoweth Evelyn Tyler May Hemphill Gertrude Fritz Billy Scott Lois Whidden Mildred 'Alice White June Livingston lla Virginia Womble ,lean Stepp MEMBERS NOT PICTURED Marylou Hall Olive Lee Harris Wanda Lee Matteson Estelle Mercer Marylou Hall Evelyn Tyler Bettie Bailey Mary Eleanor Scott Billie Fae Stringer Helen Whitfield Vesta Chenoweth Bonnie Lou Zcigler I I 1 BOYS' TENNIS In the District Meet the boys' tennis team, directed for the first time hy Coach Charles Harless, won first in the doubles but lost in the singles. These men with untiring efforts, stress on the policies of sportsmanship, leadership, and cooperationg and just credit should be given to these men that ably tutor the boys in their athletic efforts. Coach Harry Taylor is at the head of the Boys' Athletic Activities Staff of San Angelo High School. Mr. Taylor has for nine years been at this position, coachf ing the high school boys through football and basketball seasons. He has gone through many defeats and victories with his football and basketball teams. Coach Taylor has an excellent ability to practice his athletes into upmost performances. Coach Hervey Blue was the line coach. Mr. Blue gave the Bobcat football line the necessary punch needed for the football games. He also directed the track team to highest speed possible, entering five men in the Regional Meet and four men in the State Meet. Coach Charles Harless directed the Kittens in football games for their future experience. He also took over the tennis squad for the first time this year. Mr. Harless led his tennis boys with many a smash and cut on the tennis courts. HARRY TAYLOR Head Couch HERVEY BLUE CHARLES HARLESS Line Coach Assistant Coach FCCTBALL The unclassified Bobcats rose to high rating early in the season by starting the prefconference games with triumphs over Brownwood, Cisco, Paschal of Ft. Worth, and Brackenridge of San Antonio. But the Sweetwater Mustangs proved themselves a harder playing ball club when they beat the Bobcats 7fO. The Bobcats did not recover from this defeat until the latter part of the season, when they took victories over Lamesa 7 f6, and Abilene 13f9. The Cats with an unusual scoring attack of passes and hard driving, ability of team work, and a powerful spirit of determination, went to four victories, while the rugged and battering defense held the losing scores close and ended the season with the total points equivalent to 119 for the Bobcats against 94 for the opponents. WALTER BEAN Bean deserved to play more but was saved as a substitute because he was capable of replacing so many positions and handling them well. While playing guard position on defense, Walter often smeared the runner for a loss or no gaing and while on offense, Walter made his blocks stick, MARION BOWMAN Marion Bowman, known mostly as Curly, was one of the regular galloping backfield men. Curly played fullback and alter getting the ball, he would run the full length of the field and all the way back before stopping. WAYNE CASON Leftfhanded Wayne Cason, a very effective case of dynamite, played an excellent game at end. Wayne will be eligible for the next year Bobcats. DALE CHASE Chase, an all round backfield man, led and was victorious in the Lamesa game, of which he was captain. Dale is going to be a good pilot man for next year bef cause of his ability to run, punt, pass, block, and to lead the boys. This year Dale was one of the two threefsport lettermen. LENINE CORTESE Lenine Cortese is his name. Defined as a very shifty runner and slippery as an eelg a Bobcat halfback, and known as L'Nehi. Lenine is a two year letterman for the Bobcats. BILL CUNNINGHAM Bill Cunningham, a combination center and end, always gave a good example of the Bobcat spirit. Inter' cepting and receiving passes was this tall boy's pastime. Willie also was a threefsport letterman, PASCHAL DRAKE Paschal Drake gave an excellent performance at end this year. He always seemed to be in the way of the ball carrier when on defense. Paschal was also good at gathering up stray footballs that were continually scat' tered about the field. I. D. DUPREE In this dignified picture is 'LPecos Pete, the rough fighting tackle. His velocity has again and again stopped the power man opponents at his tackle position. PETE EWALD Ewald, a wing back, was San Angelo's pass receiver deluxe. Buddy never had much to say, but his tackles and the management of his end position always spoke well for him. LOUIS HILL Hill was an unexpected Bobcat, who made in his first year one of the best defensive men in the district. Louis was quiet but always ready to go. JOHN NASWORTHY This is the fellow whom everyone saw going through the line with a Bobcat determination to get hold of the ball carrier's legs. john Nasworthy is a two year letter' man at the tackle position. GEORGE PAPPAS George, following the footsteps of Nick in his mighty kickoff, held up the old Pappas tradition. Pappas was a fast ripping guard who is proud of his honors. ALAN PIKE After Pilefclriver Alan Pike had ripped up the opposing team's line, there was very little for any team to do except to go around him. Pike has for two years been allfdistrict guard and will play for the North in the Texas AllfStar game. LEE SANDLIN Lee Sandlin, the smallest and toughest sixtyfminute man on the football squad, always shows an undaunted spirit when on the field. Although a shoulder injury kept Lee from playing much in the last few games, he will be a top notch center for the next year Bobcats. J. W. STEWART The powerfhouse of Stewart's runs, his passes to Cortese and Ewald, his long punts, and his 78 yard dash in the Odessa game, kept Stewart in the high lights. Stewart was as good as any other quarterback in the state as long as he could control his temper. JOHN WHITTENBURG John Whittenburg, center, was awarded a football letter for his brave battle against an injury that he ref ceived during football practice. Johnny will be eligible for the Bobcat squad next year. CAPTAIN LEONARD WRIGHT justly deserving the credit for the Bobcats' captain for 1939 is Leonard Bull' Wright, the Hhardffight, never' quit Bobcat. In the line as guard on defense Bull' led the brigade in ripping and slaying the opponents' back' field and line. Y 1 1 'rv 7 , BASKETBALL The Bobcat basketball team missed the Regional by three minutes and three points in an extra quarter in the District Meet. During the District Meet, Angelo took victories over Eldorado 13643, and Lake View f19f18j and lost tragically to Millersview Q26f23j. For the Senior Banquet was the night For King, Queen, Knave, Maid to recite. From Queen Tamea's fevered brain The words that flowed were quite insane. And the lines that came from King McDowell! Well-some were good, but most were foul. Qphelia sang, and Harper croakedg While Wood and Mansfield gaily joked. Dougherty, Lummus, Lacy, Gray- The Minstrels Fourfswung out to play. Herewith we begin to quote From that play on which we dote. Knave: Your majesties, this lady's nose Has just been pecked by wicked crows. King: Then you go kill those pesky birds Without more waste of rhyme or words. Queen: fTo King-you know these little domestic squabblesj You're old and fat and much too stable, I like my men young, strong, and able. Kink: I won't discuss your aging charm. Come, let's go, here, take my arm. fExeunt, leaving the tarts unprotectedf-the foolsj Maid: ffxsidej I think I'I1 be a little coy. You'll have to prove your love, my boy. Knave: If that's what it takes, I'd better start. I'll be back in a flashfwith a cherry tart. fExit Knave, going you know wherefand he got 'em, too.j Knave: You told me to rook 'em, So, presto! I took 'em. Maid: Then you are back into my favor. Sit down and we will taste the flavor. fQueen enters with King and discovers thievesj King: ffimidlyj Your Majesty, I have a plan Whereby this erring couple can f f f Queen: CA little annoyed-and who wouldn't be?Q Qut with it then, don't stand and gape Like some apologetic ape! fAfter considering for some momentsj I bid them leave us now to try To bake a new and tasty pie! Bettie McKenzie ,vw 9 ,E ' pmsvs ni' i eff-is ' Ease 4 BY TAMEA HENDERSON The news of the year of course was the renovation of the good old alma mam' my building, Nub Jones' being promoted to the junior class, and Dale Chase's falling for the root of all evilfwhich is really not money at all, but a woman, and a blonde at that! Buster Reed and Tomasine Stanley repeated as the bandboys' favorites-and, confidentially, mine too. Maribel Rickerfin the blue head blouse-Bettie Bailey, and Bonnie Lou Beigler screamed their little hearts out for the Bobcatsfand did a darn good job. And speaking of Bobcats, what a coincidence that two famous steadies and the most chasedfallfaround boy of all time were all on the same team! The steadies were of course Pete Ewald, whose pleasant ball and chain was-and still is-June- Hudson, and Paschal Drake, better known as Pat baby to the object of his affecf tions, Mary fCleopatra Had Nuthin' on Mel Heffley. The Heffley is also my nomination for AllfAmerican Sophisticate Number One and DeefLuXe. The last boy, who has been continually bounded by admiring femmes, shyly dips his head and murmurs, 'LIt's just that I'm so wonderful that the poor girls can't help it. He, you guess immediately, is modest, shrinking little Lenine Cortese. P. S. The chaserfin- chief way May Hemphill. This year saw the rise of the Sigma's-under Skip HollandAand the decline of the health, wealth, and general welfare of the poor pledgesfstill under Skip. It also was the year of the great floodufwhich was a great rolling tide of neither fater nor wine, but jackets, hundreds of them. Also I printed my last charity ads for the Zocahs. This year saw, too, the smashing of many feminine hearts when Mr. C. L. Harless, with hands pressed to his ears to shut out the piteous wails of throngs of disappointed girls, married another woman. The most violent Kid Day of all time nearly wrecked several interfering juniors - and definitely caused them to catch cold-as they were forced by their wicked, wicked superiors to walk-say it gently and with tears in your eyesfmiles and 'miles sans pants. Others were flung brutally into the drink. Still others had their blue eyes blacked and their handsome features definitely marred. But oh how the seniors enjoyed it! And then there will linger on the memories of the tcnsest four minutes in eve1ybody's life. I mean those four minutes at the end of the BrackenridgefAngelo football game when the score was 13 to 7 in favor of Angelo, and Brackenridge had the ball on the Angelo threefyard line on a first down. And the Bobcats held them! But that was the longest four minutes I ever held my breath! Then there was that horrible day when Claudia White swiped the glass out of the city auditorium because one of her favorite singing stars had drunk from it. The brute nearly got about fifteen faithful little senior players incarceratedfwhich is such a pretty word to mean getting thrown in jail. Shame on people with sticky fingers! Memorable among memorables were the Bill TurnerfBillie Hunton romance- he's the cruel creature who bangs Billie's head against the wall'-eethe Raymond Smith' Ernestine Bell infatuation, the Glenn CorbellfEvelyn DeMoville affair, and the Betty Hendersonfjack Runkles utrueflovef' which I predict will rank darn close to Bubba and Annie in the halls of dear old S. A. H. More things well worth recalling when we are all old were Vesta Chenoweth's formal on the roof garden of the St. Angelus, the PrefDebs' barn dance in Bill Hanks' wool house-this includes the false hair and buck teeth of Elyon Holimanf fand all the gray hairs acquired by certain parties in trying to get an orchestra for the Prom. Pardon me now while I go home an' pack my diploma in lavender and tears. Goodbye and all my love fffff Daisy HORRORSOOPES BY PROP. HoBARTo QSeize allg nose alll By special request of my contemporary, Professor H. GREENWICH VILLAGE Proudly hovering over an easel and several tubes of oil paint in his mousey garrett, Cubistfmurialist Ross Gouey lifts his starved face long enough to look out his window. Languidly, he beholds Poet Bettie Bailey hanging out her weekly wash, as she recites portions of The Huling Rhyrning Dictionary. In the distance, strains of an aria can be heard, and as we draw closer, we behold Mary Heffley standing beside a garbage can, serenading the empty apartment of the late Pat Drake recently murdered by Tarnea Schultz, the notorious mussing witness. WASHINGTON, D. C. Her feet propped upon a desk, Senator Lucille Luclqett, presidential hopeful, passes out cigars to fellow members of her Gluttons of Corruption Party. First to receive a cigar and to put it away for a rainy day, is fustice john Harper, of the Supreme Court, whose investigation of monopolies resulted in the Harris Smith and Go. oil scandals. Elizabeth Piper, glamorous lobbyist, coyly twists the ear of Secretary of Treasf ury George Byars. Please, she whispers, can't you loan me just one or two billion little old dollars? International spy Ruthie Mansfield, America's femme fatale, sinisterly hides some bombing plane plans under her cape, but is pursued by GfWoman Ann Alderman. RENO, NEVADA Platinum blonde Mary Louise fohnson, wicked nightfclub hostess, applies an extra smear of eyefshadow as she winks across the roulette wheel at Banker Ira Green, who is happily embezzling his Federal Reserve funds. Nedra Gibson, Lacy, jones acl infiniturn, bows to the crowd as she enters on her annual Reno court engagement. Betty McKenzie eyes the dance floor for a glimpse of a newly detached male. Giving up in disgust she goes home to her knitting and chimneyfcorner chair. THE INTERIOR OF INDIA V Amid the lilting notes of an oriental lyre, Maharaja Iaclqalea Wood, naturalized citizen of the Orient, blows bubbles through his washed air pipe. Dancing before him in a frenzy of rhythm and few clothes, jackie Oden, wife Number 2061, entertains her master. Ivlissionary Nadine Parish teaches nursery rhymes to the many Wood children, while Imperial Slave W. Rice carries elephant tusks to Dentist fohnnie Mae Macf Naughton. Sports, social activities, and everything in general have caused it to roll merrily along. A I dedicate this column to faclq and jene Moore, since they come nearer being living models of Cfing Double. They are seen all over the campus, walking double, talking double, studying double, dressing double, and even playing doubles in tennis. Football season was rather hectic, wasn't it? Everybody thought the Bobcats were goners when Pete Ewalcl was operated on for appendicitis, but they pulled through. Other invalids of the year were Mary jim Thompson, who broke her ankleg Fayrene Dodson and Patsy Allison, who were both out of school with appendicitisg and june Covington, who tried to slide down one of the twin mountains and ended up with a skinned arm and a sprained ankle. If we have gained no other wisdom, we have at least learned how to spell and pronounce the names of Iohnnie Mae MacNaughton and Mr. Scruggs. The PrefDelJs definitely established themselves this year, and by their many activities, cast a rosy glow upon the school year. Several students without whom this school year would have been a flop came from near and far. Wilma Faye McGlothlin rolled in from Sweetwater, and right away was elected one of the assistant yell leaders for next year. Her part in the girls' doubles tennis team wasn't slouchy, eitherfjust ask Miss Sims. Robzrt and Philip Maginot, hailing from Boston, Massachusetts, both made names for themselves. Philip was a valuable cornet player in the band, and Robert was the sparkfplug Kodak editor for the Campus Corral and Westerner. Leap year didn't harm the boys much at the Leap Year Barn Dance on Feb' ruary 29. There were numerous wall flowers, though! Remember how Virgie Sewell and jimmy Neeley won the prize for best couple, and Beryle feanne Elliott and Dwight Chriesman won individual honors? Now I will list a few happenings to be remembered from this school year. First in importance is the marriage of our science prof, Mr. Galloway. 'Twas a sur- prise to all when, after the Christmas holidays, he came to school a married man.. ..And do you remember the time Ernest Tubb dedicated the song 'Tm Sorry for Myself to Mr. Phagan ...... At all the football parades were seen Mary Stumberg and Duwain Hughes in his open air jitny ...... Prize saying: Confucius say, In the spring a young man's fancy-isn't he! ...... Prize sign: Now showing- Mr, Smith Goes to Washi1igton'fwith selected shorts ...... lack Smith and the three Mary Whites were dubbed as having the most common names in high school ...... Among the budding romances that have stayed in the budding form are the cases between A. K. Hall and Helen ,lean Stroman, and between Ross Couey and jean Scepp ...... Doris Prager was about the luckiest girl in school! She won 35400 at a local theatre. Of course, she nearly fainted, but what's a faint compared to 5400? . . . . . . I can't forget to mention that Sal Hall was elected girlfriend of the Dervishes ......Ceorge Byars took the cake when he won a prize for writing the best letter on Paul Jones Whiskey!
